he Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Bank
Holiday Celebrations throughout our
country were absolutely amazing!!
The sun shone, for most of the time, and the
British people came together to acknowledge a
historic and remarkable achievement by Her
Majesty to reign over us for 70 years…
The celebrations in London were matched up
and down the country but I must say locally,
organisers did us proud – I witnessed fantastic
events in our community and our residents went
along to create the most refreshing feelgood
factor.
Once again, sincere thanks to event
organisers and to our community who supported
their endeavours to create something really
special for everyone.
The soundbites at the moment are that the
UK could be in for a heatwave this Summer
which will probably lead to many people enjoying
a Staycation – especially as flying abroad from
UK airports is a nightmare!
There is absolutely no better country in the
World to have a holiday than the United
Kingdom if the weather is OK – gorgeous
countryside, fantastic beaches, beautiful historic
buildings… And of course the people are just
amazing!!
I have to tell you that I recently took my
family to Fulford Community Choir’s 10 Year
Anniversary celebrations at the impressive setting
of Sandon Hall. My daughter was singing in the
choir and it was truly wonderful – it bought a tear
to my eye…
The whole afternoon was perfect and
resembled a quintessential English Garden Party
as we all ate strawberries and cream with a glass
of wine. The adult choir sang beautifully as did
the talented Fulford Primary School Choir…
It reminded me of how I love my community
and the people who live around me – I’m proud
to be British, that’s for sure…
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of The

A
bode’s journey with the beautiful Marley
Shaw began in January 2022. The previous
month, parents Callum and Charley, were
informed their two-year-old daughter, Marley, had
been diagnosed with Leukaemia.
Following this tragic news, Callum and Charley
invited Abode to appraise their current home, as it
would no longer suit the family’s needs with the
extra space and attention Marley was going to need
in the forthcoming years.
It was only upon entering their property, our
valuer George was made aware of Marley’s diagnosis
and situation. George recalls Marley lying quietly on
the sofa with her pink iPad, minding her own
business, seemingly unaware of the situation she was
and currently still is in. Your heart instantly breaks
seeing a completely innocent two-year-old, with no
hair and visibly weak.....
Immediately, you are called to action and feel
compelled to help. After explaining Marley’s
situation to all his colleagues, we all decided to put
ourselves through our own personal battle and train
for the Derby 10km run. We are happy to report, the
participating runners all finished the full 10km, with
one member even deciding to do a further 3km fun-
run afterwards, managing to raise £1000 towards
her cause. This money will go towards Marley and
the other children on her ward, raising their quality
of living and encouraging a positive start in life,
which this awful disease has deprived many
children of.
Through courage and determination, Marley
has recently been told she is in remission, however,
still faces two years of further chemotherapy and
many years of rehabilitation. In an interview with a
local newspaper, Father Callum said “It’s just
ridiculous, you want to say thank you but I always
say that thank you is never going to be enough. I
owe everybody a lot of my time now, I’d drop
anything I had to help the people that are helping
us”.
Huge recognition must go towards Uttoxeter
Rugby Club, who have been at the forefront of
promoting and fundraising for Marley’s charitable
cause, their link to donate can be found at the end
of this article.

Supporting Marley and her family

O
n the 24th April 2022, a charity event at
Oldfields Sports and Social Club was organised
by Uttoxeter RFC in aid off the children’s
oncology ward at royal Stoke hospital on behalf of
Marley shaw.
Marley is the daughter of one of Uttoxeter’s players
and she was diagnosed with leukaemia back in
December 2021. Callum Shaw and Charley Straughton
were given the awful news that their 2 year old daughter
Marley Shaw had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. She
started her treatment within days of being diagnosed
and is currently doing really well and responding to
chemotherapy as the doctors would hope. She still has
a long road to recovery ahead of her and a large fight on
her hands with the treatment running over 2 and 1/2
years, however Marley Shaw still has a smile on her face
and never fails to put on on others.
The charity event raised £6,000 which is going to be
used towards new garden equipment for the oncology
ward outdoor play arena and it will also be used to buy
toys and games consoles for inside the ward. After a
lengthy chat with the oncology ward at Royal Stoke this
was the best way to use the money.
A special thanks is extended to Joe Gorman, Thomas
Sherratt, Jake Batista and Jack Bostock for help
organising the day and making it a success. Also a
thanks to Oldfields Sport and Social Club to adding a
large sum to the takings, Minnie Millward of Ashbourne
for making £630 from selling raffle tickets, Lauren
McCarthy for sorting out the raffle prizes and making it
extremely appealing!! Tracey Sherratt for catering the
event. Danny Moon, a close friend of Callum’s dad
Richard Shaw, for organising play your cards right which
raised a large amount of money.
And lastly Thankyou to Ant Davies and Jack Conlon
for being the cogs in the works and sorting everything
out In the background. Overall it was an extremely
successful day and one that will not be forgotten. Marley
Shaw and the children at Royal Stoke oncology ward will
be forever grateful.

The Unwanted
I
f you are young and pretty and have an affectionate
nature you are loved by everybody, but when you are
perhaps not so pretty, getting on a bit and can be a bit
grumpy then no one wants to bother with you. How sad
is that? We have cats who fit into both categories. Those
in the first category soon find themselves new homes, but
those in the latter category often end up as unwanted.
Take brother and sister, Dixie (left) and Darcy, both are
black, a bit plump and are
now about 9 years old. They
love the person who is caring
for them, but get worried when anyone else visits the
cattery, so they are always overlooked. They have been
waiting for a new home since July 2021 and no one has
shown any interest in them at all. They love to go outside
to sit in the sunshine and we would love to find them a
home where they can lead a quiet life.
Doris (right) is a tabby cat who was born in 2012 or
thereabouts. She has her moments. Sometimes she loves
you, sometimes she doesn’t. She needs to find a home where she is the only cat and
with people who understand cats and can tolerate a cat
who at times will want to be on her own. Do such people
exist?
George (left) is just an ordinary black and white cat
with one crumpled ear. He loves to be given a fuss and
will head butt you if you stop as he wants more. He is
just 4 – 5 years old and has been without a home for
several months, mainly because he acts shy when anyone
visits, so everyone ignores him.
Dixie, Darcy, Doris and George just need to be given
a chance. They are all extremely well cared for in the
cattery, but it’s not like having a ‘proper’ home. Even if you are not able to adopt a
cat, maybe you could foster one until that special someone comes along to adopt
them.

x Queens Guardsman and Derbyshire Police
Officer Chris Turner started the appeal after
seeing the devastation on TV.
Chris put together a go fund me page and using the
power of social media put an appeal out to local people
in Uttoxeter and further afield for help with donations
and to say the people of Uttoxeter, Derbyshire and
Staffordshire have been fantastic with the donations
would be an understatement…
Originally Chris was due to travel with the aid with
a friend but due to work commitments he was unable
to go so in stepped Oldfield’s Club Member and friend
Dave Lawless who volunteered to co-drive for the aid
trip.
The trip was to be over 5 days delivering the aid
originally to Red Cross in Szczecin in Poland but this
was ultimately changed by the Red Cross who asked
Chris and Dave to deliver directly to a Ukrainian Crisis
and Health Centre in Szczecin.
Uttoxeter’s Dave Lawless relived their fantastic
journey: “Day 1 we drove to a stop over in Folkstone so
we could get the early train out to Calais. This was to
be our longest drive in all from Uttoxeter to Werder just
outside Berlin, a total of 798 miles and 14 hours driving.
This long drive set us up for the shorter trip into Poland
and Szczecin. On our arrival we were faced with
approximately 300 families that day who would need
clothing and feeding.
“This was a very emotional scene for both Chris and
I, the group were mainly mothers and small children,
all looking for help and to say Chris and I did not have
tears in our eyes would be a lie. These were the scenes
you see on TV - the devastation war can course - people
displaced by no fault of their own. The van was
unloaded with the help of staff and refugees, then we
spent a few minutes talking to the people themselves
outside. There were hugs and thank you’s turning me
into a blubbering wreck once more. As we are both
fathers it was honestly heart-breaking to see these small
children with nothing - grateful just for a biscuit…
“We were then on our way home and the return trip
saw us stopping in Wolfsburg in Germany and then the
final night in Ghent Belgium before catching the
Eurotunnel back to UK.
“Both Chris and I would like to thank the people of
Uttoxeter for their generosity in both items of aid and
money donations with special thanks to John Ashmore
of Ashmore’s Ice Cream, 97C Well For Life Community
Health Hub, Knight’s 4 Uttoxeter, The Derbyshire Police
Federation, Bike Barn Ashbourne, Staffordshire &
Derbyshire Probation Services, The Treatment Rooms
Tutbury, Tesco Uttoxeter and last, but not least, Sir
Lance A Lot High Pressure Cleaning Services.”
Dave concluded: “But most of all, we thank our
families Karen, Sophie & Zach and Chris’s family Sarah,
Archie & Jacob - without your support and
encouragement we could not have done it Thank you
so much....
“Watch this space, Chris and I will be returning to
Poland with Food aid!”
Chris and Dave have carried out one of the most
emotional and heart-rending journeys of their lives -
they did it for Uttoxeter and our local area, they did it
for the Ukrainian people, they did it for those
traumatised women and children, they did it the British
way…
Emotional Ukraine Aid Trip
An Appeal to our local community for donations for much-needed aid for people in Ukraine has been hailed a huge success!

A
Parish Council Meeting was held in Uttoxeter Town Hall for Uttoxeter Lions
to receive the annual Commendation Award 2022. The award is in
recognition of the community work carried out by the club over the previous
12 months. The text of the award is as follows.
“In Grateful recognition of the work that Uttoxeter Lions volunteers carried out
tirelessly throughout the Pandemic to assist the residents of the town with the fair
share scheme, the vaccination programme, Marshalling, Community Support, and
fundraising for local good causes etc.”
Most of the club members were able to attend the ceremony at which the award
was presented by the Town Mayor Councillor Chris Sylvester.
Lion President Simon Smith MJF commented that this was indeed a great honour
for the club to receive such recognition, and a great privilege for all serving members.
Uttoxeter Lions
Club Wins Award

T
hey promised it would be bigger and better than
before, and they delivered. Uttoxeter Lions Club
were determined that the return of the Party on
the Pitch - their popular two-day beer festival and
music event at Oldfields Sports and Social Club - would
not disappoint.
Continuing the party spirit from the previous
weekend’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, the Lions
organised their biggest-ever festival, and the crowds
returned as if the pandemic had never happened. Or
maybe it was because it had happened that they wanted
something to celebrate.
Party on the Pitch raises money for prostate cancer
tests for local men. More than 400 blood tests took
place in the festival marquee on the Thursday before
the event. The testing programme, organised in
partnership, with the Graham Fulford Trust, represents
an £8,000 commitment this year by the Lions Club. It’s
a commitment they are happy to make because they
know it saves lives.
The next two days helped pay for next year’s blood
tests. There were 25 beers, a dozen ciders, a selection
of gins and Prosecco, and more than 500 paying
partygoers.
The live entertainment on the Friday evening was
a coup for the organisers - Glory Days, the UK’s
longest-established tribute to Bruce Springsteen and
the E Street Band. In the weeks immediately before the
event Springsteen fans had bought a million tickets for
the American rock legend’s 2023 European tour. Die-
hard E Street fans were among those at Oldfields
getting an early taste of the hits and rarities to be played
next year. From the opening Born in the USA to the
closing Born to Run, an audience mostly Born in
Staffordshire enjoyed a powerful show.
Glory Days are the first rock band to perform on a
Friday evening at Party in the Park, and the success of
the night suggests they won’t be the last. The music on
the Saturday had a more familiar ring, with two local
favourites and the return of the band who have made
Saturday night at the beer festival their own.
The afternoon kicked off with Big Stone Gap, a
group of accomplished local musicians. Tight
harmonies were to the fore as they delivered an eclectic
mix of country, folk-rock and Americana, including a
handful of original compositions that more than passed
muster alongside more familiar songs.
Uttoxeter’s Jason Callear maintained the bright and
breezy mood, accompanied by bass player Sean Prior.
Jason, an accomplished all-round musician who
produces highly-acclaimed original work, has become
a firm friend to the festival with his crowd-pleasing
acoustic covers of hits from more than half a century
of pop and rock. Like Glory Days the night before,
Jason performed free of charge to support the prostate
testing project.
For the last decade - aside from the unwelcome
two-year enforced absence - the task of filling the
Saturday night dance floor has fallen to Shropshire-
based rock band Upfront. The beer festival used to be
their only engagement in the area - a once a year
highlight in their busy schedule. But they have proved
so popular with the Uttoxeter crowd that they have
returned several times for private parties. They showed
why they are so well loved as they brought the festival
to a rousing climax.
Simon Smith, the President of Uttoxeter Lions
Club, said: “It was a joy to be able to bring Party on the
Pitch back after a difficult two years. We are grateful to
local people for their continuing support and to our
sponsors. Without that sponsorship, events like this
would not be possible. They helped make this a party
to remember, and it has inspired us to want to offer
even more next year.”
Dates for next year’s event have yet to be fixed, but
the success of the 2022 Party in the Park means the
Lions are confident of being able to offer at least as
many prostate tests as this year.

Sheep Fair comes
to Uttoxeter
A
small group of enthusiastic volunteers organise
Annual Sheep Fairs in local market towns. This year
they are coming to Uttoxeter on Saturday the 9th of
July - the High Street will be filled with sheep…
Every hour sheep shearing demonstrations will take place,
a mock auction with one of Bagshaws leading auctioneers will
be held, sheep themed shop window displays, local schools
art competition, live music, spinning demonstrations and
stalls selling sheep-related products plus a display of some of
the more unusual uses of wool. The group bring the sheep
back to the market town - come and see them, it is free to one
and all…

Holt
Centre
T
he Kingsley Holt Centre
project was set up in
2021 in response to the
news that the Methodist Church
had decided to sell Kingsley
Holt Chapel. The Chapel had
been the beating heart of the
village for over 80 years and as
well as its religious purpose was
used as a village hall for all
manner of things such as
toddler groups, meetings,
children’s activities, polling
station and community
fundraising days.
Our group applied to have
the Chapel registered as an
Asset of Community Value with
SMDC, and it received this
listing in August 2021, not long
after this, the Methodist Church
notified the council they
planned to sell, this gave our
Group a few short months to set
up an incorporated company,
and a bank account and raise
the needed funds to purchase
the building with the intention
to open the building as a
community hub, shop and café
all ran by volunteers. This
would provide the much-
needed space for groups, classes
and activities as well as the
opportunity for people to be
able to visit a shop within
walking distance for the first
time in 14 years, an absolute
must for our community with
fuel prices at an all-time high.
Any profits made by the society
would be sown back to benefit
the community.
In March 2022 we launched
our community share offer, and
in just under six weeks we
raised £140,000 from the
community. This put as in a
strong position to make an offer
on the Chapel. The Methodist
Church state that their law and
policy means they can only sell
for best price and we were
extremely disappointed to be
told on the 10th June that our
offer had been unsuccessful and
they had accepted an offer from
another party.
The use of this building is
vitally important to our
community, this has been
shown by the number of people
who have invested in, donated
to or volunteered to help with
our project. We are committed
to continue to fight to ensure
that this building is only used
for 100% community use. Any
move away from this would be
tremendously detrimental to
our village.

Just the
perfect day...
W
e had been together for 14 years when
Nick got down on one knee in
October 2018 and proposed above a
volcano crater, filled with a beautiful green and
turquoise lake famed with a romantic legend, in
the Azores. We started planning straight away as
I knew all the best suppliers get booked up 1 - 2
years in advance and we knew we had a lot of
saving to do!
We invested a lot of time and energy into
planning our big day for 5th September 2020.
With my career in event organising and
marketing, I felt like my skills could really be put
to good use and I enjoyed every minute of the
planning and preparation...that was until Covid
hit in 2020. The worse part was the uncertainty,
yet feeling mixed emotions of disappointment
and heartbreak (and guilt for feeling those things
for something that may seem so trivial to others)
if it couldn’t go ahead. As we got closer to our
date with everything ‘ready-to-go’, Boris finally
gave a wedding road-map for Summer 2020 with
restrictions in place and we decided to rearrange.
While our suppliers were patient and
understanding, everyone was put in very difficult
situations - they wanted to support us and
honour our original quoted prices, despite
struggling themselves as self-employed
companies who received little support.
Postponing was an easy decision. Family and
friends are hugely important to us, and as we
have been together such a long time, another year
wouldn’t hurt if it meant we could have everyone
there and the wedding day we had hoped for
without compromising .
When we were given only three months’
notice that our wedding could definitely go ahead
as planned on September 4th 2021, it didn’t leave
much time to invite guests and do the final
arrangements and fittings, but we managed it! By
this point, some of our original suppliers had let
us down, but the wedding community is super-
supportive and rallied around to find new
suppliers.
I stayed overnight at the Belfry Hotel the
night before the ‘big day’, thinking the on-site spa
might help relax any nerves, and Nick stayed at
our home in Uttoxeter ready to travel up in a
Bentley Bentayga with his groomsmen the
following morning.

Finally the day came, 4th September 2021, and we
were all feeling a mixed bag of emotions - after all, our
family had been through all of the ups-and-downs with
us, so knowing that this day was finally happening and
we could have our wedding day how we wanted, made
it feel even more special. In fact, for most people it was
their first wedding - or even the first time dancing and
seeing friends - in almost two years so everyone was so
excited and it meant so much more.
The bridal party and I arrived at 8am at Moxhull
Hall’s on-site bridal lodge and spent the morning
relaxing with prosecco while my good friend Jane got
to work on our hair and make-up. With six people to
get ready, she had her work cut-out. But, with an epic
playlist, it was a fun time for everyone. I left a wedding
gift for Nick to open at home - a box filled with all the
wedding essentials - like ‘The One’ aftershave, mints
(for a fresh kiss) and socks (in case he gets cold feet!) -
and he left a gift for me - my favourite perfume and the
first gift he ever brought me (J’adore by Dior). I also
gave my bridal party their gifts, some of which they
could wear and use on the day.
As the photographer and videographer started the
arrive, it became real. Hair and make-up done, dress
and shoes on - the nerves really started to kick-in once
the registrar (and also good friend) Kelly Ash, arrived
for our briefing. Once my dad entered the room and I
saw his proud smile, it immediately relaxed me and was
reminded that all the people out there were our closest
family and friends who were all there to celebrate our
love and their love for us.
Having my dad walk me down the aisle was a huge
deal, especially as it had taken him four flights and five
Covid tests to be there! Being the last daughter in the
family to get married was a huge deal and I could tell
this made him more emotional, but gave me a sense of
pride walking arm-in-arm. The ceremony took place
in Moxhull Hall’s secret garden, where you had to
remind yourself we were in Sutton Coldfield and not
the tropics, and we had the amazing Jessica Sutton
playing the harp ready for us to make our entrance. As
soon as we heard Ludovico Einaudi’s I Giorni, we knew
that was our que. Unfortunately our page boy got too
distracted by the fountains so never made it down the
aisle with us, but the bridesmaids walked down to their
parts and as I turned the corner to walk down the aisle,
it was so special to see a sea of smiling faces beaming
back as well as Nick in tears! He was crying so much
that he nearly got Kelly going too, and I genuinely
thought something was wrong when I got to the front.
The ceremony only lasted 30 minutes, where we
had three lovely readings by our nephew Archie Turner,
my cousin Rosie Edgley - which she picked herself -
and Kelly. A lot of our family and friends live abroad,
so unfortunately couldn’t travel to England with the
travel restrictions in place, so we set-up a live Zoom of
the ceremony and we had people tuning in from as far
as Australia to Iran! We left the ceremony as husband
and wife by walking through confetti, before enjoying
our Kir Royales and canapes on the terrace with
Jessica’s beautiful harp music in the background -
giving a relaxed and elegant vibe.
We have a passion for adventure and exploring, and
having visited almost 70 countries between us, it made
sense that our wedding was travel-themed. Decor
involved suitcases, vintage cameras and flowers made
from maps, and a world map directed guests to their
seats (each table named after a different country we had
visited together, complete with photos and a globe for
guests to leave messages). The wedding breakfast menu
featured food from around the world. Most people
were very full after the portions, so they could sit back
and enjoy the speeches, firstly by my father then
mother, which were both very heart-felt and gave
everyone the ‘feels’, and the best-men double-act got
lots of laughs. In fact, Moxhull Hall said it was the
funniest speech they’d ever heard!
The day casually moved into the evening reception,
located in a fixed outdoor marquee complete with more
fountains, chequered dance floor and chandeliers. Our
band, Parallel Lines, sung us in and got the party
started with the mix of soul, r’n’b and latina rhythms.
Guests could also enjoy the tuk tuk photobooth,
attempt the limbo and help themselves to our unique
around-the-world sweet cart. We cut our wedding cake,
each tier with different worldly flavours of passionfruit
and white chocolate, limoncello and cherry bakewell.
Our first dance was created by the band at our request,
a mash-up of UB40’s version of ‘can’t help falling in
love’ with Maroon Five’s ‘Girls Like you’ - which gave
us the perfect mix of romantic twirling, through to
more lively dancing. That set the party vibe and the
dancing didn’t stop - even the conga made an
appearance! Guests also enjoyed the fresh ‘street food’
- I’m still getting compliments about the kebabs even
now!
We didn’t want the night to end and most guests
stayed overnight at the venue so we could enjoy
breakfast together the next day. All the drama and tears
we went through to get to this point had made it all
worth it to bring everyone together and celebrate what
was missing over Covid - love - and I’d do it all again
in a heartbeat!
After a couple of days, we jetted off to our
minimoon in Santorini (booked very last minute as the
travel restrictions were ever-changing) and then we
enjoyed a longer honeymoon in December, where we
visited Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Learning about road
safety the fun way
Y
oung children in Uttoxeter are being taught about
road safety in a fun way by a retired police officer,
with the backing of the Knights 4 Uttoxeter. Wendy
Kitchen who lives locally, has nearly 20 years’ experience
with Staffordshire Police, has adopted the name PC Penny
Farthing to run practical learning sessions with early years
children in schools.
She explained: “Although the overall number of child road
accidents has fallen in the last few years, sadly, deaths and serious injuries still occur.
I wanted to ensure, therefore, that local children are aware of the dangers that roads
and traffic present. But as a mother of four children, I was aware that there was a
lack of interesting and exciting material on the subject.”
To rectify matters, Wendy produced a book ‘PC Penny Farthing Goes to School
to Teach Road Safety’, which is now in its second edition. She has also invested in a
wide range of ‘props’ including an electric police motorbike, a tractor and trailer and
a ‘wobble bike’ for children to role play.
Knights vice-chair Matt Baxter said: “When Wendy told us what she was doing
we were happy to make a contribution to her equipment costs. She has already run
a number of ‘taster’ sessions which have gone down well, showing that there is a real
need to convey the road safety message in a way that young children understand.”

he Rotary Club of Uttoxeter was busy recently
enjoying the company of both young and senior
members of the community. At their weekly
meeting at the White Hart, they were joined by six
members of Uttoxeter Explorers Scouts who told the
Club of their plans to attend the World Scouts
Jamboree in South Korea in 2023. Charlotte Jones, Finn
Done, Luke North, Catherine Mangan, George
McCarthy and Joel Minshall, all students at Thomas
Alleynes High School, presented an illustrated talk on
the event and their plans to raise the funds to attend
this once in a lifetime experience.
Club President Roy Smith reports; “These young
people were great company and
explained the details of this event with
great confidence. We were very
impressed by them and their ambition
and several Club member wished they
were a few years younger and could
join them on their adventure!”
This will be the 25th World
Jamboree with over 40,000 16-18 year
old Scouts attending with a theme of
“Draw your Dream”.
The President added;
“We were delighted to
make a donation to their
funds and look forward to
their promised return visit
to hear all about their time
in Korea.”
The following day the
Club hosted an afternoon
tea party for 80 senior
members of the community at the Heath
Community Centre. This annual event was
replaced last year by Easter Hampers being
delivered around the town and villages due
to the lock down.
Dave Rushton, Chairman of the Club’s
Community Committee reports; “It was
great to be able to entertain our senior
friends in person again. The room was full
and there was a real buzz of conversation all
afternoon.”
Members of the Club offered transport
and waited on the tables delivering a full
afternoon of good company, tea, a raffle and
entertainment
One of the messages of thanks was from Beryl
Holly would said; “We would like to thank the Rotary
Club for a perfect afternoon tea. We enjoyed it very
much, excellent service, beautiful food and great
company and very well organised.”
The President concluded; “It has been a busy week
but great fun. I think we are all enjoying being able to
join together again and meet new and old friends and
we are pleased to be able to help this happen.”

Y
ou know me, I like to think of a theme or group
for each column and this month theme is the
word selfless.
What is Selfless – the Google definition of this word
is “concerned more with the needs and wishes of others
than with one’s own”. Google goes on to say that
Selflessness builds communities. Google explains that
“whether you are volunteering at sunrise to pass out
water at the local road race fundraiser, serving as a
tutor to someone who is struggling in school or giving
generously and anonymously to
those in need, saying hello to
someone on the street, listening to
someone who needs to be heard,
you have a direct impact where you
live.”
In Uttoxeter I found a selfless
man called Lewis Hemmings and I
felt his story needed to be told.
In March 2020 (yes lockdown)
Lewis turned 21 and decided to
grow his hair, like lots of us, but
unlike lots of us, he continued to
grow it until May 2022. Having
decided he wanted to get it cut he
and his Mum, Kerry (Nanna B’s
Knitting) researched a charity that
would benefit.
Sadly, Lewis’s Godmother,
Annabel Lambourne aka Tink, lost
her husband to stomach cancer in
December 2021 and is herself now
living with breast cancer. Lewis immediately knew that
his hair could benefit other cancer sufferers, especially
children. Research came across the Little Princess
Trust. This charity was set up by another two selfless
people, Wendy and Simon Tarplee after their daughter
had developed cancer and found losing her hair to be
traumatic and real hair wigs were hard to find.

The Vestry Hair and Beauty salon, a selfless
business, in Uttoxeter offered to cut Lewis’s hair so that
it fitted into the criteria needed to make wigs,
(ponytails at both ends with a hair band, and one
halfway down (or at regular intervals for longer hair))
and the cut took place, with an update on Lewis’s
Instagram page – @lewyhemmo along with a
fundraising link for the Little Princess Trust too.
These selfless acts are a tribute to, how as a
community, we can all do something to help one
another. Thank you to Lewis, your kindness will be far
reaching.

A
nature reserve which has
become a haven for
endangered wildlife is
celebrating the next stage of its growth thanks to a
donation from JCB.
The 11-acre Tean Valley Meadow Nature Reserve
at Hollington Lane, Stramshall, near Uttoxeter, has
been awarded £15,000 in a three-year support package
from JCB. What started out as a retirement project for
founders Alan Williams and his late wife Sylvia, in
2002, it has become a regional visitor attraction and
respected national haven for flora and fauna.
The reserve features a natural planted woodland of
more than 5,000 trees including 24 native species, a
wildflower meadow, and a wetland area. It has become
a nationally recognised site for endangered species of
barn owls and newts – both of which are thriving on
the site.
The Trust is run by Alan, 81, a team of four trustees
and a number of volunteers whose aim is to raise
awareness of environmental issues and build support
among the community. The team has a particular focus
on encouraging young people to develop craft skills
and knowledge of the natural environment, with
hundreds of young people and families visiting the
reserve each year.
Alan, of Foston, Derbyshire, said: “The JCB support
enables us to continue to improve the site and to
develop the wetland scrapes which are home to many
endangered species of newts. Our aim is to keep
improving the habitat, sharing our knowledge through
craft courses and talks and preserving the site for
generations to come. We cannot thank JCB enough for
its support.”
A JCB spokesman said: “Alan and his late wife’s
commitment to the environment is a shining example
of what can be achieved with vision and hard work.
Such dedication to creating and developing this wildlife
haven on our doorstep is something we are delighted
to support.”

Tynsel Parkes Academy Lions Combine
for a Litter Pick at Bramshall Park
R
ecently, Pupils from Tynsel Parkes Academy joined forces with Lions to do a
litter pick at Bramshall Park. Year 2, led by Mrs L. Webb, and several other
teachers descended on the park at 9:30 armed with pick up sticks and a full roll
of rubbish bags. The group spent a good 90 minutes scouring the park for rubbish.
Initially the children thought the park was really clean and tidy until they had a good
look around them. In all around a half a dozen bags of rubbish was collected. Several
plastic bottles were discovered and placed in the park’s own recycle bins.
The children were very quick to notice the signs on the static rubbish bins, “people
caught dropping litter could be fined the sum of £75.00. The joke was made that that
sum of money would buy a lot of sweets. However, they all agreed a clean park and
environment was a much better outcome.
The event was to mark a start of a joint venture between the school pupils and
Lions in conducting a realistic community role by the pupils in our town of Uttoxeter.
Later in the year the pupils will learn what it is like to experience life as a partially
sighted person or be totally without sight, and raise funds for Sight First (a Lions
Charity following a challenge by Helen Keller) In fact it was Lions international who
invented the first white Stick, In addition, both the lower and upper school will be
taking part in community service projects. All of which forms part of the PSHE section
of the school’s curriculum, and also fulfils Lions commitment in promoting youth.
Lion President Simon Smith commented this event is an exciting start to the
partnership with Tynsel Parkes Academy and welcomes this opportunity in extending
our youth programme in working with young people to promote community work in
our town.

A Tribute to Dave
Scorer of Uttoxeter
Dave Scorer, a loving husband, father, grandfather and active member of the
local community sadly died on 13th April 2022.
Born in Sunderland, Dave moved to Uttoxeter in 2009. Dave led a full life
through his involvement with the Uttoxeter Lions Club and the local branch of
CAMRA, for which he was Secretary. Prior to the covid pandemic, he was also
a volunteer at Sudbury Hall. Dave could also be seen cycling through the
country lanes of Staffordshire as part of his personal campaign to stay fit.
Along with his wife Carol, he joined Uttoxeter Lions in 2014 and was elected
President of the club in 2018. As an active member, he put his skills to work
through his role as Health and Safety Officer, making certain that the public and
fellow Lions were kept safe at their many events throughout the year. Dave was
also responsible for Public Relations, ensuring that club activities gained
maximum coverage in the local press, and co-ordinating the delivery of “The
Voice” by Lions members. His enthusiasm for Lions along with his friendly
leadership skills were recognised by Lions Clubs beyond Uttoxeter and he was
appointed as Lions Zone Chair for the years 2020/21 and 2021/22.
Dave was also on the committee for the annual Uttoxeter Beer Festival (Party
on the Pitch); a great opportunity for him to bring together his love for real ale
along with his enthusiasm for the success of Lions sponsored events.
Whether it was helping to organise the next big event, selling raffle tickets
on a cold winter’s day in the Maltings, directing traffic at COVID Vaccination
Centres or running a stall at Cracker Night, Dave could always be relied upon
to put in his time to support others. He will be greatly missed by his family,
friends and the local community.

Mayor Elect, Councillor Philip Hudson,
was inaugurated as the 30th Mayor of East
Staffordshire recently.
“I’m greatly looking forward to taking on the
role as the Borough ambassador for the next 12
months”, said Councillor Hudson.

especially with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
around the corner, I have a great opportunity to

he Painsley Catholic Academy is delighted to announce that
its schools have collectively raised £16,500 for CAFOD’s
Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal. The academy comprises
two Catholic high schools and thirteen Catholic Primary schools
in Staffordshire and started their fundraising in March.
Primary school activities included sponsored walks, fun runs,
making and selling craft items including their own story books,
bake sales, film nights and many more. Two primary schools asked
students to bring in loose change and used the coins to fill in a large
map of Ukraine. A special mention should also go to The Faber
Catholic Primary School in Cotton who raised a massive £2446
with their ‘Walk For Ukraine’, where the children completed laps
of the sports field within a set time.
At Blessed William Howard Catholic High School, in Stafford,
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Uttoxeter and Painsley
Catholic College, in Cheadle, students brought in a huge quantity
of items to be shipped to Ukraine – items such as bedding / torches
and long-life food, in addition to raising almost £10,000 in funds.
Painsley College asked students to use a £1 donation from the
RE Department and to make it grow by investing it into their own
personal fundraising activities. Blessed William Howard students
organised a whole day of activities for the school, including ‘sponge
the teacher’, tuck shops, penalty shoot outs and rowing
competitions.
St John’s Catholic Primary School in Great Haywood near
Stafford is one of the smaller schools in the academy, and has
welcomed three Ukrainian children into its family this term. Head
of School, Mrs Lucy Snaith, commented, “The school community
has raised over £150 for the CAFOD appeal but what has been
really amazing is just how lovely our children have been in
welcoming our three new students and going out of their way to
make them feel at home.”
Mr Steve Bell, CEO at The Painsley Catholic Academy said, “I
am immensely proud of the efforts of all of our students, from age
3 to age 18, they have all taken this campaign to their hearts. Thank
you also to parents and staff who have supported the various
initiatives throughout the academy.”

U
ttoxeter’s Oldfields Hall Middle School Year 6 football team went to the
National Football Finals at Coventry City’s stadium recently. They had an
incredible journey to get to this point, winning the district, county, and
regional tournaments! Just to get to this final was an amazing achievement that hasn’t
been done by any Oldfields football team
The tournament started off well, Oldfields scoring after 30 seconds! They went
on to draw game one. Then they beat the second opponents and set up the last game
to get through to the semi-finals. The lads unfortunately lost the game but still
qualified for the semi’s!
The semi-final was incident packed to say the least! Oldfields went 1-0 up, 3-1
down, and finished agonisingly 3-2 down therefore losing and going out! But the
boys are officially the joint 3rd best Year 6 school football team in the country which
is unreal! They were the better team in the semi too and were so unlucky not to win
and go into the final, but it wasn’t to be.
At the end of the tournament, the organiser said that over 4000 schools had
entered this competition from all over the country and Oldfields got to the last 4.
So, an incredible achievement from all the boys - well done, everyone is so proud of
you all. It’s a day they will never forget...
Thanks to all the parents and family/friends that came to watch, your support
all year has been amazing. Thanks to Mr Gliddon for coming and giving great
support to the team as well as Mr Wright who was a huge help.

wonderful event held at impressive Sandon Hall saw
Fulford Community Choir celebrate their 10 Years of
Singing! The group, under the direction of maestro Dan
Hollingshurst, sang beautifully in front of an excellent audience,
supported by the brilliant Fulford Primary School Choir, under the
guidance of Jackie Condliffe, and Ovation, the Staffordshire
County Council Workplace Choir.
The 10th anniversary celebrations, attended by The Lord-
Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Ian Dudson, also included
refreshments as guests enjoyed a quintessential English Garden
Party atmosphere.
Many congratulations to all involved in what proved to be a

My love of Life, Lorries and Coaches

His series continues from previous Voice magazines...
M
y father had experienced very serious health problems since the Second
World War and they reared their ugly head again whilst he was driving for
Norman Green.
He had just been put in charge of a new lorry, being the type with an Ergomatic
Cab, an Albion Clydesdale which was very comfortable but Dad’s health continued
to fall and he had to come home and go on the sick.
This caused much hardship to our family as sick pay did not cover the bills…
Even though my employment at the time was keeping my wife and I, my mother
and father’s monies were dwindling so it was time for action!
As you know, the quarry industry around the Cheadle area was very busy in the
Sixties so I needed more money in the situation we as a family found ourselves in.
My wife at the time was employed at Elkes Biscuits at Uttoxeter but even with
her wages it was not enough to help out.
So they had just started a double shuft system at Hulland Gravel to produce more
products to satisfy demand and I managed to get a post there diving a Foden 8 Wheel
Wagon driving internally around the quarry, stocking extra gravel ready for the
upturn in demand.
The shifts worked were 8 hours but were paid at 10 hours pay plus bonus which
doubled my wages overnight so this helped out no end. And as my father started to
get better, he became the other shift driver on the Foden.
Working at Hulland was like being part of a very large family and I treasured my
working time in the quarry industry. I wish those days could have continued, but as
they say, all good things come to an end…
The building industry took a downturn and it had an effect on the quarries, but
not all, as the limestone industry were busy because of the road building taking place
around the Birmingham area at thie time and also the N.E.C. was being constructed
but more about this later…
The two shift system came to an end, dad was offered a position of doing the
bank transfer business and I was working in the quarry filling in as required.
What would come next in the next chapter of my life? I will tell you in my next
article in The Voice…
John’s Jottings

H
aving started writing late in life, I have
published three novels – a fictional trilogy
based on my grandfather’s life (‘The
Prendergast Novels’ John D Smith on Amazon). I’m
now trying my hand at short stories – some fictional,
some life-based. I hope you enjoy.
Stokey Blinders?
W
e have a TV series Peaky Blinders displaying
gangster activity in the West Midlands.
Aggressive and violent criminals who ruled
their area.
So maybe a few words and thoughts about the past
equivalents in Stoke-on-Trent… a different time… a
very dark time.
In this era , there were lots of other city gangs, and
not least the notorious Hanley Rough Street Gang of
the early 1800’s. It is claimed that this gang was formed
by ex-soldiers from the Napoleonic War – men who
returned uncelebrated and without work.
They were just one of many sets of thieves and
criminals – Liverpool had the High Rip Gang,
Manchester the Scuttlers. London had many groups –
way, way before the Krays but equally as territorial as
their successors.
We are now in the early 1880’s in Stoke. Poverty, low
incomes and drink… much drink… men taking lots of
drink.
Consequently many of the men without work
turned to their best option for their skills – brutality
and robbery.
The Potteries now coming to their industrial peak
– the mines, steelworks and, of course, the potteries
requiring the employees to work long, long hours, in at
times, appalling conditions. Many of the younger men
were paid low wages and suffered the routine low-level
work – lifting and carrying amongst the heavy fumes
with the continual dust and environment which would
cause future debilitating illnesses. So here was another
option.
Life was more than difficult. Small properties and
large families. If lucky, two bedroom back-to-back
terraced houses with no heating or sanitary facilities
and built and rented through their employers. Lose
your job… lose your house. At best, a rough toilet to
the rear of the terrace with poor drainage shared by
many.
It was a time when many men leaving their work
turned immediately to the local public house. Cheap
but weak beer. Weekly wages and more spent with little
regard for their family or their future. Gambling and
other options drained the funds.
According to previous records, the main road from
Hanley to Burslem was the Rough Street territory. A
long dark track leading men away from the drinking
houses and – usually worse for wear - wandering along
the street where the gang members would wait amongst
the hedgerow waiting for the intoxicated passing
traveller.
The men carried knives and clubs and cared
nothing of their victims. Men were attacked, their
throats cut, their legs and arms broken and damaged
for whatever was available. Left on the roadside…
.rarely arrested or charged for their crimes or attacks.
The law enforcement? Virtually non-existent. A
poorly paid local constable unable to cover his territory
and unwilling to confront the gang members who were
physically stronger and more aggressive. This officer
would turn his back – understandably perhaps – and
walk another way. Most chose or declined to work at
night.
The Rough Street boys had the area in their control.
No one would give evidence and they ensured that any
court case would be defended by their selected
witnesses – paid or threatened to support their cause.
Other were quickly dissuaded from a negative version.
On the very odd occasion one of their number was
charged with an offence – and guess what? The
witnesses faded away… or disappeared…
Records show no member of the gang was ever
convicted.
So when you watch Peaky Blinders, remember they
were just a relict of many city gangs – maybe they were
even less violent than their predecessors…?

by Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott
There was an ale thief in
Tummy Dawkins’s pub. Every
Wednesday - darts night. at
least one pint of beer was going
missing from the shelf by the
dart board and it was creating
somewhat of a problem. Pints
of beer regularly got mixed up,
especially on darts night but if
the amount of pint pots
equalled the amount that
should be there it wasn’t really
a problem but if there was one
missing, then it became one
and that was what had started
to happen. Around this time a
fellow named Bill Otley had
started using the pub. Bill was
a big affable chap who would
exchange pleasantries with all
and sundry and carried a white
stick which signified that he
was blind so he quickly became
known as ‘tapper’. He wore a
pair of dark glasses and came into the bar tapping his
way to the counter and tapping his way out at around
ten oclock. Tapper liked his ale and would put away a
fair amount over the course of an evening and the
amount that he drank didn’t seem to impair his
movement, Everyone who used the pub was a suspect
in the ale thieving matter - apart from Tapper Otley.
Prime suspects included owd grandad Piggott, club
paper Jack, daft Gullickson and various other ne’er do
wells but the situation needed sorting as it was creating
an unpleasant atmosphere in the pub. Tummy Dawkins
was especially annoyed.
‘Ah’d give anybody free ale fer a week if thee could
nail this bugger!’ he announced
one night.
‘They’t on!’ said owd
grandad Piggott. He took the
landlord to one side and
outlined his plan. ‘This ‘appened
five eers ago in th’owd ‘ut’ he said
‘…an’ ar know a sure fire road o’
ketchin’ ‘im’
‘They go fer it then feyth,
free ale fer a week if they’t
successful.’ So owd grandad
Piggott set about making up a
special brew and on the night of
the next darts match and he
placed the doctored pint just
around the corner of the dart
board… in exactly the same spot
as the last filched pint had been
taken. It was a while before
anything happened. The usual
crowd were in who always
turned up on darts night for the
free food and in common with
the watched kettle that never boiis, the doctored pint
never moved… then suddenly, it did! Nobody saw it
disappear, one minute it was there and the next minute
it had gone. Owd Grandad Piggott caught the landlord’s
attention.
‘It’s gone!’, he muttered. ‘Get ready fer some
fireworks. Nothing happened for a long pregnant
minute or so then suddenly there was an explosion
from the corner where Tapper Otley stood.
‘GLAAAARGH!!’ gasped Tapper Otley wildly.
‘Groooogh - wow, Bloody hell’ He suddenly began
forming at the mouth and making horrendous noises,
his dark glasses shot off the end of his nose, and
ignoring his white stick, he didn’t tap his way out of the
pub- he ran!
Tapper made a bee line for the door and left a
rubber skidmark on the floor. There was no sign of
sight impairment as he fled out of the pub at nine miles
a second.
‘Ays as blind as ar am!’ growled Owd Grandad
Piggott.
‘What didst put in that ale?’ queried Walter

We never saw tapper Otley again and owd grandad
Piggott enjoyed a free week of Tummy Dawkins’s best
bitter.

Down on the Farm

uly already and with it brings the start of harvest
for this year. The rape will have been dessicated, or
swathed. This is because the crop ripens unevenly
but needs to be dry for processing.It will be combined
to produce a small black, poppy- like seed, which can
then be turned into a highly nutritious oil.
Much was grown in Ukraine and exported overseas,
but the horrific war there has interfered with that. Our
thoughts are with those suffering there still.
Early combining of barley may also begin, if the
weather is kind.
Silaging will be continuing until the farm has
enough to cover the winter need- dairy farmers will
need many ‘cuts’, but the nutrition of the grass will be
dropping now. If we are lucky with the weather then
some farmers will make hay, needing at least three good
days, preferably more, to make good hay that keeps.
Shearing will be finishing, but we may be spraying
the lambs to protect them from fly strike. Any lame
ones( including ewes) will be treated and their growth
assessed. Fit ones will be marketed and the rest will be
wormed.
From mid month, our conservation field margins
can be grazed or cut and ground beetles are plentiful,
particularly where there are ‘beetle banks’ in mid field.
They hide under stones during the day and hunt
caterpillars and worms at night.
Redshank, also known as Redleg, can be found on
the bare Earth at the edges of fields. It has a red stem
and narrow, pointed leaves with an oblong of tight knit
pink flowers erect at the top and it is part of the dock
family.
Along our drive we often see such plants, the
occasional orchid or plentiful yarrow, eye bright,
mousewort and self heal, along with those we don’t
want, such as thistles and ragwort. In fact we’ve noticed
where our cattle graze we get a good crop of buttercups
and where the sheep graze we tend to get more thistles.
These will be topped now to stop them spreading.
We’ve also seen a Roe deer on occasion, crossing
our drive- an unusual occurrence for us, as we are not
that far from civilisation.
Summer is a great time for agricultural shows and
we should be in full swing by now, everyone being
pleased to re start after the last couple of years. Let’s
hope they are successful as they are one of the few
places farmers tend to socialise.
Maybe we will be able to take time out from
clearing out the sheds, some of which we have never
really gone into for many years. It will be interesting to
see what we find!

Dove Valley West Midlands
Championship 2022
Over two weekends 4 swimmers from Dove Valley had qualified to compete in the
West Midlands Regional Championships 2022.
Lucy Oldham 1 event
Oliver Edwards 3 events
Isabelle Edwards 8 events
Daniel Simister 1 event
The Championships were held at the Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry in a 50m
pool which is not the usual environment for the swimmers as they are used to
swimming and training in a 25m pool.
Each swimmer gave their all and obtained a personal best for every event swam.
Out of the 13 events qualified two swimmers and siblings Oliver and Isabelle
Edwards made 4 finals.
Oliver made the final in 50m Backstroke of which he finished 7th in the region
and 100m backstroke of which he finished 4thin the region. Isabelle made the final
in 200m backstroke of which she finished 7th in the region and 100m backstroke of
which she finished 6th in the region.
Each swimmer competed to their very best ability; therefore,the event was a
success for Dove Valley.

Alan’s Football Autobiography

T
he saying that money is the root of all evil certainly
belongs to golf at the moment. Saudi have offered
enormous amounts of money to make their Tour
attractive to players.
The World knows their Human Rights situation but it
doesn’t stop Countries dealing with them, selling Military
Arms is just one major issue the UK have been involved with.
So many reasons not to trade with the Saudis but it still goes
on. There’s always people willing to criticise that are not
squeaky clean themselves.....
Where does this leave Sport, massive sponsorship and
personal deals for individuals are so attractive some will
decide they have the right to work where they want to, putting
to one side the terrible treatment of people. Dustin Johnson
has made the decision to give up his Membership of the
USGA, an extremely difficult decision for him, but one
which a lot of people will not agree with, Phil Mickelson has
also moved to the LIV Tour but is hoping to play in Majors,
they have been cleared to play in this year’s USA Open and
have also got the right to play in the future through previous
wins. It will all boil down to money and maybe Phil
Mickelson who has admitted a gambling problem feels he
needs that money no matter what.
Whilst I have some sympathy for Phil, I have a lot more
for people who have the addiction and don’t get help, and
their families suffer. Poulter, Westwood and a few others are
taking the opportunity to make more money - can you blame
them, they have worked very hard.
Yes, so many ways to look at the whole issue and very
complicated but do we hope the Saudis will follow the
Western way to live slowly in the future or Sharia Law will
always rule, tolerance is the key to understanding Islam and
many other religions. Dubai have moved in the pathway of
‘we want the money from the World’ and allowed Rules to be
altered to make their millions from Tourism and Sport.
Mohammed Rasid Bin Al Maktoum, the leader of Dubai,
has managed to spin all the plates and attract the World’s
tourism to his Kingdom to come and play and keep his Wives
and Sharia Law. Of course he is an extremely shrewd and
clever businessman who has the power to control his people
and improve their standard of living, also mix with the
World’s Royalty at Newmarket with his horse racing business
providing many jobs in that area. Plus giving massive
Sponsorship to many Sports to lure them into his Kingdom.
My Son Daniel was a Golf Professional in Dubai at the
Emirates and witnessed their hospitality and way of life and
the balance of different cultures mixing together. He really
enjoyed the whole experience and so did I when I visited him.
Let’s hope Saudi move in that direction with a strict
interpretation of Sharia Law they have a long way to go. I
certainly don’t like how women are treated so that has to
improve dramatically for me…
Port Vale getting promotion was a tremendous
achievement given all the circumstances at the club. I have
many great memories working at the club and having the
privilege to work with John Rudge. Speaking to John after the
game he also said the memories came flooding back to him,
his achievements will always be remembered by the fans.
Vale fans will never forget such players as Foyle, Guppy,
Mcarthy, Walker, Tankard, Porter, Aspin, Musslewhite, Bogie,
Glover, Van De Lan, Sandeman, Kent and Naylor. An
outstanding group of players and my good friend Mark Grew
assisting John. I wish everyone at the club good luck next
Season, especially Darrell Clarke.
The World Cup is approaching quickly - is Southgate
ready to win it, or is he going to carry on with his FA pleasing
speeches, for me the talking is over we need to see a group of
players hell bent on winning. If you want the top recognition
you have to deliver. To keep saying we are improving and
learning shows lack of positivity, we have a team equal to
most for me Grealish, Foden, Trent, Kane, Saka, Gallagher,
James Bowen, Stirling, Henderson, Walker, Stones, Coady,
Ward Prowse, Justin, Ramsdale should be strong enough to
compete - the key is to play your match winning players -
Grealish, Foden, Trent, Stirling, Kane, Bowen, James must
play, we have no top class defenders so attack has to be the
teams aim. Gareth has never been attacking minded so we
can’t be very optimistic.
Joe Root has swept away the disappointment of losing the
England captain job, with some world class batting. His
timing really is top quality with onside driving of such
precision, he’s so strong behind point as well.
I am hoping Derby County can get a buyer - to see such
a famous club unable to financially go forward with good
owners is terrible for the supporters, a club which has such a
great history ending up in such a mess. So many months
going by and still no security for the staff and players, Only
five contracted players left and pre-season just around the
corner, their position is extremely precarious. I remember
going to the old Baseball Ground ground with Rudgie and
sitting with Jim Smith in the Stand listening to those two guys
talking about the game what a memory to have. I hope for all
their great supporters the club can survive and look forward
to them playing the Vale.
O
n the day Man City sign Erling Haaland and
Liverpool are set to sign Uruguay’s Darwin Nunez
from Benfica for fees in excess of 50 and 80
million, my thoughts turned to the young players that play
in the respective clubs’ academies.
It’s tough to break into the team at these clubs when
they can buy the best players in the world but not
impossible.
Think Phil Foden for one who plays more often than
not and starts in the big games. Not as though City are
about to sell him but what would he be worth in the
current climate? Certainly upwards of 100 million would
be a conservative guess. This sort of money would then
justify the amount the club spends on their academy. Two
others who could well make the grade there are Cole
Palmer and Rory Delap’s son Liam.
Liverpool probably get more of their young players
through than City despite buying from the top table. Like
City they paid big bucks for Van Dijk, Becker and Diaz
amongst others, but have progressed academy players
Trent Alexander Arnold, Harvey Elliott, Kaide Gordon and
Curtis Jones.
Hard to get through at the bigger clubs but it can be
done via a loan for most of them at a slightly lower level.
I was down at Clayton Wood a few weeks ago, home
of Stoke City academy. What a super set up with excellent
facilities and staff. Local lad Gareth Owen is head of
academy and how he has transformed the set up in the
small time he has held the role.
The day I was down there watching my grandson Billy
play for the u14s in a semi final against Man Utd I had a
short conversation with Gareth. He had a good career in
the pro ranks starting at Stoke before moving to Oldham,
Stockport and ending at the Vale. I remember when I was
at Crewe we tried to sign him. He decided to stop at Port
Vale as they offered him an opportunity to combine
playing with coaching.
When we met him he struck me as a level headed guy
who realised he was coming to the end of his playing career
but had planned his next step towards another pathway
which involved staying in the game. He mentioned the fact
that City’s teams from u23 down to the u10s had got into
7, yes 7 semi finals. I’m not sure how many they won,
though the u23s got to the final before losing to Wolves.
I know people from their academy and believe me they
spend far more than Stoke on recruiting players. Now I
know they may well have been disappointed not to have
had more success but it shows real progress under Gareth’s
watch. He’s a modest man who wont thank me for this
praise as he’s quick to point out both the recruitment and
the part the coaches play in the development of their
players.
I’ve always maintained that the most important aspect
of any academy is trying to get players into the first team
but it’s also imperative to produce good teams that play the
right way which in turn generates a higher standard of
player. Mr Coates, your academy is in good hands.
It doesn’t seem two minutes since the promotion and
relegation spots were finally settled in the play-off games.
Yet as you read this teams will be back in doing their pre
seasons at local and professional level. One thing that
didn’t sit well with most football fans and in particular the
players were the pitch invasions we all watched on TV.
I must admit that in my younger days I was guilty of
doing the same thing myself. Which Stoke fan around the
same age as myself can ever forget 1979 and gaining
promotion at Notts County? Paul Richardson’s goal in the
last couple of minutes meant we would finish 3rd and go
up. It was an emotional day and an estimated 14,000 made
the short trip to Nottingham and a few thousand of them
ended up on the pitch celebrating the goal. The Stoke
players weren’t pleased at all as they feared the referee
might well stop the game if order wasn’t restored. It was
and off we traipsed into Nottingham city centre to party
the night away!
Its very difficult to steward and police a ground full of
supporters who have just seen their team win such an
important game and it makes for good viewing if the fans
just go on just to celebrate but those that go on for other
reasons such as to goad the opposition players then, no
thanks, stay in the stands or on the terracing....
Some of the managers did not cover themselves in
glory did they? Darryl Clarke was one in the home game
against Swindon. What a poor example he set to the club’s
fans with his histrionics on the touchline. Paul
Heckingbottom also let himself down in the Sheffield Utd
v Notts Forest game, throwing the ball in a threatening
manner at an opposition player. Patrick Vieira was another
who behaved poorly in the game v Everton at Goodison
Park, kicking out at a home supporter. He might well have
deserved it but it’s the manager’s responsibility to set the
standards he would expect of his players.
As I said earlier it’s an emotional game where we have
our highs and lows but it’s important to control those
emotions and show the right way.
It’s all change at Uttoxeter Town FC. Manager Paul
Snape has been enticed away to Market Drayton FC. The
Town committee have acted swiftly and wisely in my
opinion and opted for local lad James Curley to take over
the team. ‘Curls’ is a real football nut who wears his heart
on his sleeve. He played for me at Leek Town where I used
him mainly as a centre half though he was just as successful
as a striker.
He was so competitive, maybe over competitive at
times, but he was totally committed to the cause. This is a
good trait to take into management and he will get those
players of his showing those same attributes. Let’s hope the
Uttoxeter public gets behind him and the club, I will be
watching with interest…
