Google Docs allows for both asynchronous and synchronous collaboration. Asynchronous collaboration facilitates collaboration when users are in different locations or working at different times, and is useful for conference proposals, grant proposals, curriculum development, strategic planning, and articles. Synchronous collaboration allows for real-time collaboration, such as in-class group peer review, and can be used for real-time group strategy sessions with students in different locations redesigning a collaborative project simultaneously using the writing tools.
