While the US is often seen as the main destination for immigrants during mass transatlantic migration, this was not entirely accurate. Large numbers also went to South America, especially Argentina and Brazil, and to Canada. In the century before 1924, Argentina received over 5.5 million immigrants and Canada over 4.5 million, comprising a larger portion of their smaller overall populations than immigrants did in the US. These immigrants came from a more diverse array of countries, allowing for greater interethnic interaction and making American cities more multicultural, leading to the description of the US as a "
This document discusses the evolution of relations between the United States and Cuba and how it has affected Major League Baseball. It outlines the history of tensions between the two countries since the 1960s, including the U.S. embargo on Cuba. This made it very difficult for Cuban baseball players to defect and play in MLB due to dangerous smuggling operations required to leave Cuba. Recent policy changes under Obama have opened up relations, allowing for increased financial flows and exports between the two nations. These changes could help transform Cuba's economy and potentially lead to reforms ending the communist system, opening the door for greater MLB participation from Cuban players.

This document provides an overview and analysis of Cuba's economy and how it may operate in the future given improved diplomatic relations with the United States. It begins with a history of Cuba, highlighting the country's colonial past under Spain and periods of conflict and revolution that have impacted its economic and political development. Subsequent chapters discuss the background of US-Cuba relations, including the Spanish-American War and Cuba's independence, as well as the current state of tensions between the two countries. The document aims to explore how easing tensions with the US through steps like lifting the trade embargo could help Cuba's struggling economy and allow it to better participate in international trade.

The presentation discuss the dynamics behind the announcement of the restablishment of Cuba - U.S. diplomatic relations and some important consequences for the Caribbean
This document discusses the development of urban agricultural systems in Havana, Cuba. It describes how Havana experienced prosperity after gaining independence from Spain in 1902, but faced economic difficulties after the 1959 revolution aligned Cuba with the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Cuba lost 80% of its food imports and had to rapidly develop localized urban farming to feed its population. These urban agricultural systems continue to play a major role in Cuba's food supply today.
The easing of the US embargo on Cuba has led to speculation about investment opportunities, but there are still significant challenges. The document discusses areas like telecommunications, travel services, and distressed debt that some investors see as opportunities. However, it cautions that Cuba's infrastructure requires development, legal protections are uncertain, and the embargo remains mostly in place. It advises investors to seek counsel on compliance with the embargo's remaining restrictions to avoid sanctions.

- The US maintains an economic embargo against
The document provides background on the ongoing US embargo against Cuba that was imposed in 1962. It discusses the arguments for and against maintaining the embargo, as well as new developments in US-Cuba relations in recent years. This includes President Obama announcing in 2014 that diplomatic relations would be restored between the two countries for the first time since 1961, though the embargo remains in place. Responses from Cuban American senators expressed skepticism about normalization of relations.
Wall Street Journal Article Class AssignmentKeith Rakes
President Henry Matai announced that the United States will lift its embargo against Cuba and restore diplomatic relations after 51 years. This comes after President Matai and Cuban President Raul Castro briefly met at the Olympics and agreed in subsequent discussions to end the embargo and Cold War tensions between the two countries. The administration outlined a three-part plan for Cuba to transition to a full democracy, including legalizing private businesses and opposition parties by 2015 and elections in 2016 and 2017, in exchange for Cuba fulfilling promises like returning seized American properties. President Matai believes this will allow the Cuban people to determine their own destiny as a free, democratic state integrated into the global economy.
This white paper discusses how thawing relations between the US and Cuba could benefit New Orleans. It notes that New Orleans and Cuba historically enjoyed close trade and cultural ties, exchanging goods and influencing each other's music. Improved relations could reopen economic opportunities, as Louisiana previously exported $256 million worth of goods to Cuba annually. The paper also outlines reforms in Cuba showing openness to economic changes, and increasing engagement between US and Cuba officials, indicating relations may continue to strengthen. It argues New Orleans is uniquely positioned to leverage its historical connections and expand trade if restrictions with Cuba are lifted further.
By the middle of the 18th century cuba had become a socialist state.777Augustine Ferdinand
By the Middle of the 18th Century Cuba had become a Socialist State in 3 sentences:
After the 1959 Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro overthrew the Batista regime, Castro declared Cuba a socialist state and instituted socialist economic policies like nationalizing industries. Cuba became increasingly dependent on the Soviet Union for economic support and aligned politically with other communist states, establishing a one-party socialist system. This prompted the U.S. to cut ties and impose a trade embargo, solidifying Cuba's transition to a socialist state.

2. Recently, the United States of America
was surprised when president Barack
Obama announced that he was planning
to fully open diplomatic and economic
relations with Cuba, rolling back a
section of US foreign policy that had
been around since the early 1960′s
3. While this has been a somewhat
controversial move in both public and
political forums, most people agree
that it was the right move and that the
embargo was literally one of the most
pointless aspects of US foreign policy
4. It accomplished nothing that it was meant to
(cripple the communist Castro government so that
freedom and democracy would supersede it) and
instead just harmed the Cuban population, turned
the people against the US, and allowed the
government to blame the embargo for any
shortcomings the country was facing
5. While relations have been thawing in the past
(Americans with family in Cuba can visit and
it’s possible to get to Cuba on a cultural or
educational exchange), this is a huge first step
and the opening of economic and diplomatic
relations promises to change both countries
6. Some of the groups most excited for the
recent thaw are tourism groups on both sides
7. While the lifting of the embargo isn’t
going to fully open Cuba to tourism,
it will still be enough to allow
Americans to travel to the country
and spend their money there
8. Tourism companies on both sides are
excited to be able to introduce Americans
to Cuban culture (and vice-versa) and to
have money exchanging hands again
9. Cuba is now going to be the target of
waves of developers too as they fight
over the most pristine territory on which
to build luxury resorts that can take
advantage of the newly opened country
10. With Cuba being like a step back to the
1950′s, companies are expecting people to
line up for tickets and hotel rooms
11. Full tourism in Cuba is going to need approval
from Congress and will be forced to rely on
Cuba’s weak infrastructure and economy
12. The government is also most likely going
to continue to closely monitor tourist
movements and make sure that Americans
don’t travel to where they’re forbidden
13. While there are still roadblocks in the
way on this open tourism, companies on
both sides are lining up and waiting
impatiently for the influx of Americans
and cash that will eventually make landfall
