Trump has little understanding of, commitment to, and (psychologically speaking) capacity for democratic decision-making. And that’s been clear from the start. In his convention speech, he said, “I alone can fix” our country’s problems. As author Masha Gessen put it, “Trump is the first candidate in memory who ran not for president but for autocrat—and won.” He won not in spite of that fact but, frighteningly, because of it. Social scientists discovered that the best predictor of who supported Trump wasn’t economic deprivation (for example, having one’s job shipped overseas) but a predilection for authoritarianism, an extreme need for order, a fear of the Other, an attraction to strongman leaders. e live in a time of massive institutional fail-
ure, collectively creating results that no-
body wants. Climate change. AIDS.
Hunger. Poverty. Violence. Terrorism. The foundations
of our social, economic, ecological, and spiritual well-
being are in peril.
Why do our attempts to deal with the challenges of our
time so often fail? The cause of our collective failure is
that we are blind to the deeper dimension of leadership
and transformational change. This “blind spot” exists
not only in our collective leadership but also in our
everyday social interactions. We are blind to the source
dimension from which effective leadership and social ac-
tion come into being.
We know a great deal about what leaders do and how
they do it. But we know very little about the inner place,
the source from which they operate.
Successful leadership depends on the quality of attention
and intention that the leader brings to any situation. Two
leaders in the same circumstances doing the same thing
can bring about completely different outcomes, depend-
ing on the inner place from which each operates. I
learned this from the late Bill O’Brien, who’d served as
CEO of Hanover Insurance. When I asked him to sum
up his most important learning experience in leading pro-
found change, he responded, “The success of an inter-
vention depends on the interior condition of the
intervenor.” The nature of this inner place in leaders is
something of a mystery to us. Studies of athletes’ minds
and imaginations as they prepare for a competitive event
have led to practices designed to enhance athletic perfor-
mance “from the inside out,” so to speak. Deep states of
attention and awareness are well known by top athletes in
sports. For example, Bill Russell, the key player on the
most successful basketball team ever (the Boston Celtics,
who won 11 championships in 13 years), described his
experience of playing in the zone as follows:
Every so often a Celtics game would heat up so that it be-
came more than a physical or even mental game, and

would be magical. That feeling is difficult to describe, and
I certainly never talked about it when I was playing. When

game would be in the white heat of competition, and yet
somehow I wouldn’t feel competitive, which is a miracle in

1.1 How Do We Define Abnormal Behavior?
One of the things we have discovered over the years is that if one were to poll a random
sample of average people, most would say that they know abnormal behavior when they
see it. They might assess at-a-glance someone’s behavior as strange, odd, or sick, and they
would quickly give you the reasons for their assessment. Let us look at an example of
potentially odd behavior that will illustrate this.
You are walking in your neighborhood on a gorgeous summer afternoon, listening to your
favorite songs on your iPod or smartphone. Suddenly, without warning, a man runs out
from behind the bushes across the street. This wouldn’t normally catch your attention, but
what really catches your eye is that this man has no clothes on. He is running frantically
while trying to cover himself with his hands, all the while looking behind him. Before you
know it, the man disappears around the corner. Was the man’s behavior abnormal? Do
you think this man is likely to present a danger to himself or, more importantly, to other
people? This is one of the goals that practicing psychologists have: to ascertain whether an
individual’s behavior is abnormal or not, and to ascertain whether their behavior presents
a danger to the individual or to others.
Does Abnormal Behavior Automatically Mean Psychopathology?
Psychopathology refers to the study of the causes and development of psychiatric disor-
ders. Many in the mental health professions (psychologists, social workers, counselors,
and psychiatrists, to name a few) agree that it is extremely difficult to arrive at a universal
definition of abnormal behavior (Maddux & Winstead, 2007). They agree in general about
what the term means, but they often use different perspectives to actually define it. Three
perspectives commonly used by psychologists are the statistical frequency perspective
(behavior is abnormal according to the statistics), the social norms perspective (behavior
is abnormal according to the standards set by society), and the maladaptive perspective
(behavior is abnormal because it interferes with the individual’s ability to function on a
daily basis). Each perspective has its own usefulness and limitations, as discussed in the
following sections.

Not surprisingly, people who wish to convince others to adopt their positions
do not always rely solely on attempts to establish sound and cogent arguments.
People are often more interested in convincing rather than seeking the truth
of the matter. Advertisers, advocates, politicians, political pundits, etc. (the list
truly goes on and on) have developed quite an arsenal for levelling arguments
or colouring the language of argumentation in such a way as to make the rea-
sons for accepting their point of view seem to be much more compelling than
they actually are. This need not be intentional; that is, a person’s intent need not
be deception to make use of these highly persuasive tactics. Certainly there are
many cases in which a devious type will deliberately set out to deceive, but there
also many instances in which people in good faith unwittingly make use of them
as well. Those who have an interest in identifying attempts at deception as
well as those who are interested in compellingly arguing their points in a reason-
able manner should take note of what follows.
4.1 Rhetorical Devices
A rhetorical device, in general, is a use of language that makes a position seem
to be more compelling than it would otherwise be by generating an emotional
response. This sort of tactic is especially insidious as it often much easier to
manipulate emotions than it is to appeal to reason. Heightened emotions cloud
the thinking and often have the effect of masking the fact that emotions have
been manipulated in the first place. It is crucial to insightful and critical thought
that such manipulation be identified and that a position be dispassionately con-
sidered on its merits rather than on emotional responses that have been gener-
ated by its proponents or opponents. The following is a brief overview of some
rhetorical devices. This list is by no means exhaustive.

He would take bribes from other wealthy community leaders to sway outcomes of court cases. He was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years in prison. He was more upset about the uniform he had to wear then going to prison.
While in prison he became a recluse and feared he would be talked about and targeted by others. Scott believe he was superior to everyone else in prison. He thinks that he should be treated different than others. He believes he is to intelligent and no one is on his level. He thought others were stupid. He thought his brain was a computer and he was on an inland called inferior island. He would often talk about himself to others as their superior. He believes it was other people’s fault that he was in jail and he was the victim. He is aggressive towards others that don’t believe him when he speaks about his many accomplishment or don’t agree with him at all. He thinks that other people are out to get him for his intelligence. He started to seek out people who wants to learn from him and get educated by him and what he has to offer. Come to find out he was really manipulating people to do what he wanted them to do. If he is criticized for anything his behavior would become cold, insulting, threatening and enrage. He doesn’t think I the therapist can understand him because I too am not as accomplished as he is.
