Martin Van Buren served as the 8th President of the United States from 1837-1841. He advocated for lower tariffs and free trade as well as revising Andrew Jackson's policies to seek peace at home. As President, he faced The Panic of 1837 and fought for an Independent Treasury system while also creating a successful system of bonds for the national debt.
