The American Cancer Society has released updated guidelines for breast cancer screening. The new guidelines recommend that average risk women begin mammograms at age 45 rather than 40. They also suggest screening every 1-2 years rather than annually for women aged 45-54. For women aged 55 and older, the guidelines continue to recommend annual mammograms. The guidelines no longer recommend clinical breast exams for asymptomatic women due to the high rate of false positives. Updated recommendations for high risk women will be released separately. The guidelines aim to balance the benefits of early detection with the risks of unnecessary procedures.

Cancer patients’ physical activity levels are thought to decline by at least one third following diagnosis and are often not recovered several years post treatment. Only 29.6% of cancer survivors are meeting the American Cancer Society’s and Public Health’s guidelines of 150 min of moderate intensity exercise per week. Previous research suggested that adherence to physical activity recommendations might be the most important lifestyle behavior associated with lower mortality and higher quality of life in cancer survivors.
