Youuuuuu MOTHER!
The TOILET the two were holding SMASHES into a metal garbage can,
knocking it over into the street. Dogs BARK. Dove winces, looking
at his cramped hands. Cur KICKS the toilet.
CUR (CONT'D)
Piece a...shit.
DOVE
Woulda been sweet at the fort.
CUR
Not like it woulda flushed.
Dove bends over and picks up the handle, turning it in the air.
Cur points to a trunk next to the trash.
CUR (CONT’D)

unopened four-pack of toilet paper.
DOVE

CUR
Who throws out toilet paper?
DOVE
Who cares?! It’s mine now.
CUR
It's not even opened.
Cur looks up at the house.

Just ditch it.
EXT. SCHOOL PLAYGROUND - NIGHT
Dove and Cur swing. Dove tosses a toilet paper roll over the top

DOVE
Think he’s blowin’ us off?
CUR
Uh huh. Ever notice the way Toady
walks? He’s all...
Cur mimics a clumsy walk, still on the swing.
DOVE
Naw...I never really noticed.
CUR
Dude. It’s hilarious.
DOVE
Hey, what about Germ?
CUR
What a-BOUT Germ?
DOVE
He’s comin’ right? To help find the

Shhhh. You hear that?
(beat)
It’s chicks! Laughin.' They’re
drunk.
BEEP BIDEEP BEEP goes Dove’s watch.
CUR
PSSSSHHHTTT! Jesus!
Dove smiles and shows off his new digital watch. BIP BIP BIP. Cur
gives him a look, distracted.
DOVE
Like my watch? Plays ‘Stars and
Stripes.’
CUR
Dude.
7. Up All Night 7
DOVE
Think I set the alarm wrong...It’s
eleven? Dang. Got a calculator...
Sine, Cosine...all this cool stuff...
CUR
JUST what you need, more Einstein
stuff. Now shut up...there’s chicks.
(with a grin)
When you get some experience, like
me, you'll be able to pick up on
these kinds of things.
DOVE
Why don't you pick up on this?
Dove gives Cur 'the finger' sideways. Cur smiles, then stares into
the distance. Dove fiddles with his watch. BIP BIP.
CUR
Anyway, it’s not eleven yet.
In the distance, the clock tower chimes eleven times.
CUR (CONT’D)
Now it’s eleven.
(beat)
Is that a radio?
DOVE
It's probably your brother and the
rest a’ the football team, come to
kick our asses...Hey I can write ‘She’s
Boobless,’ check it out...553, 7,
8008, 5 point 3.
CUR
Chicks, dude. They’re comin’ this way.
Three girls, all 14, approach Cur and Dove at the swingset.
CRYSTAL holds a two liter bottle of 7up and wears a Heart t-shirt,
SASHA holds a radio and wears a pink feathered roach-clip in her
hair and AMANDA, who wears jeans and a jean jacket, lights a
cigarette. They all have a little trouble walking straight.
The girls bust up LAUGHING before Amanda can finish speaking.
8. Up All Night 8
AMANDA
What are a couple of fellas like
you doin' in a place like this?!
DOVE
Swingin'.
CUR
Hangin' out.
CRYSTAL
Youuuuuu guys like to party?
AMANDA
Yeah, you got any hash?
The girls bust up laughing.
DOVE
Um.
CUR
We like to party.
SASHA
Allright!
CRYSTAL
Here. Whhet yhoour whhisssul.
AMANDA
Don’t waste that stuff on these bozos.
Crystal hands over the 2 liter. Dove takes a sip and passes it to
Cur who shuts his eyes and gulps. Amanda points at the toilet
paper decorations as she goes through the motions of smoking.
AMANDA (CONT’D)
What's all this?
DOVE
Toilet paper.
Amanda’s look says ‘NO DUH.’
AMANDA
You guys live in town?
9. Up All Night 9
DOVE
No.
CUR
Yeah.
A beat. Amanda stares.
AMANDA
What grade you in?
DOVE
That’s complicated...
CUR
We're ninth graders.
AMANDA
NINTH graders...We shouldn't even
be talkin’ to you.
(to the girls)
Let’s beat it.
CUR
Our friend Germ got held back.
He would be in tenth.
AMANDA
Germ...How do I know Germ?
Cur shrugs.
CUR
I dunno.
SASHA
Is he stupid or somethin’?
CUR
He moved and had family problems
and stuff. It’s not funny.
AMANDA
What're your names?
DOVE
What’re yours?
10. Up All Night 10
AMANDA
(rolling her eyes)
Amanda.
CUR
Cur.
CRYSTAL
Crystal.
DOVE
Dove.
SASHA
Sahhh-shuhhhh.
AMANDA
What kinda names are Dove and Cur?
CUR
Just names.
AMANDA
What’re your real names...
Dove tries to block the words coming out of Cur's mouth.
AMANDA (CONT'D)
Come on.
DOVE
Don’t...Cur. Don't!
Cur LAUGHS under Dove's punches.
CUR
HIS NAME'S DWIGHT!
The girls LAUGH.
DOVE
Dick!
CRYSTAL
Dove's just as bad.
AMANDA
What about Cur?
11. Up All Night 11
DOVE
Short for frickin’ curse.
Dove begins twisting his swing around and around winding up the
chains like a spring.
CUR
My last name's Curtis.
AMANDA
And Germ?
CRYSTAL
(as if struck by lightning)
Oh my God! Your older brother is
Jim Curtis!
AMANDA
Jimmy! The football player.
The girls all do a little dance that lasts two seconds.
THE GIRLS
Woooo!
AMANDA
He is a TOTAL babe!
CRYSTAL
A stone fox! He drives that Barracuda.
AMANDA
Ow! Barracuda! Wa wa wa wa.
DOVE
He's a dick.
CUR
Shut up Dwight.
DOVE
He is.
CUR
YOU don’t call my brother a dick.
I do.
12. Up All Night 12
CRYSTAL
(with the headline)
JIM CURTIS IS A PERFECT TEN.
CUR
He’s a dick.
SASHA
Yooooouuuu kinda look like him. A
little.
The girls look at Cur (wolves looking at a chicken). Cur smiles,
uneasy. Crystal plants a kiss on his cheek.
Dove uses the swingset poles to twist the chains of his swing into
a tight knot.
CRYSTAL
Give that to your babe of a brother
for me.
AMANDA
You pullin' an allnighter?
DOVE
We’re goin’ to that party. When
Toady ‘n...when...when
our friends show.
CRYSTAL
Cops broke it up.
CUR
No way.
AMANDA
Way.
CUR
That was supposed to go on all night.
CRYSTAL
Well, we’re headin’ to the parkin’ lot.
Besides, the party moved across the street.
Amanda take out her last cigarette, crushes her empty pack and
tosses it.
13. Up All Night 13
AMANDA
We gotta pick up more smokes.
CUR
Cool. Yeah...we were goin’ over there
too and you know check it out and you
know...smoke...or whatever...and stuff.
Dove releases the pole, his swing twisting free, he spins out of
control, smashing into Cur. The girls watch impatiently.
CUR
OW! Hey...what’re you doin’?
CRYSTAL
Later.
AMANDA
Bye.
The girls walk away and turn up the music on their jambox. Cur and
Dove watch in awe. Chicks.
CUR
Why you gotta be such a dork?!
DOVE
They shouldn’t smoke.
CUR
What?
DOVE
They shouldn’t. She littered too.
CUR
What?! Who cares?
Dove thinks hard. He nods his head in the air.
CUR (CONT’D)
Whatta you doin'?
DOVE
Smell that?
CUR
(with a LAUGH)
14. Up All Night 14
Pussy?
DOVE
Strawberry. One of them...smells
like strawberries.
Cur chases nothing around in the air with his nose.
CUR
(in ecstasy)
Wowwwwwww.
DOVE
Yeah...
CUR
Mmmm.
The two sit in silence, eyes closed, sucking it in.
Toady, 13, walks up. He's soft on the edges. His big heart shines
through the sparkle in his eyes. He walks a K-mart bike, complete
with pussy pads and a flat tire.
TOADY
Hey guys.
Dove and Cur jump.
DOVE
Jesus Christ Toady!
CUR
What the hell you doin'? Tryin' to
make me crap my pants?!
TOADY
Sorry. Jeez. Hey, what's all this?
Toady smiles. He points at the toilet-papered swingset, nodding
his head, chasing some smell.
CUR
Toilet paper.
TOADY
Oh. Hey, what’s that smell, you guys
eatin’ candy?
15. Up All Night 15
CUR
Better.
Involuntary LAUGH from Toady. (What could be better than candy?)
CUR (CONT’D)
Chicks.
DOVE
We’re gonna meet up with ‘em later.
TOADY
Oh. What for?
CUR
What for?! We're gettin' some action
tonight, Toady. We're gonna get laid.
A beat.
TOADY
Oh. O.k. Um, you're just kiddin' right?
The boys dismount the swings and walk across the grass. Toady
walks his bike.
TOADY (CONT’D)
I got a flat. Tire.
CUR
Yeah.
TOADY
So, who are the chicks?
CUR
Dunno.
TOADY
Whatta ya mean?
CUR
You were there, how should I know?
TOADY
I been thinkin’ ‘bout this party all
day. I heard Tommy got one a’ them
16. Up All Night 16
ten foot subs from Howie’s. Man...
CUR
There’s no party, Toad.
TOADY
(he may just cry)
Huh?
DOVE
Cops broke it up. Doesn’t matter,
we weren’t goin’ anyway.
TOADY
I thought you guys were kiddin’ about
findin’ the creature. Are you serious,
there’s no party? No big… sandwich?
CUR
No party, and for the last time, it’s
called a ‘Creature Hunt.’ You hunt the
creature, you do not FIND the creature.
You FIND Easter eggs.
TOADY
I’m pretty sure it’s an Easter egg hunt,
Cur.
DOVE
Toad would know.
CUR
Whatever. The creature is something
you HUNT. Second of all, we’ve got
chicks lined up.
TOADY
Well, like I was sayin’ I guess I
should just go home then...
CUR
You're coming with us. There's three
of them, gotta be three of us.
TOADY
But...but what about Germ? You guys
ARE kidding, right?
17. Up All Night 17
DOVE
He’s not gonna show.
TOADY
But what if he does? Shouldn't
...we wait for him?
CUR
Germ will show.
DOVE
It’s eleven seventeen. He's blowin’
us off.
TOADY
Hey, cool watch.
DOVE
Thanks.
CUR
When he DOES show, it'll be too damn
bad because you got first dibs Toady.
TOADY
But...I don't want first dibs...
DOVE
Good, you can have ‘Sahhhshuuuh.’
Cur and Dove share a LAUGH.
TOADY
...I don't want any dibs. I just
wanna go home.
CUR
You're not goin' anywhere.
TOADY
(panic sets in)
But, wait. I. We can go by Germ's
and then, you know, pick him up. I
mean. Germ's probably better with girls
and stuff, than I am...
CUR
Yeah...probably.
18. Up All Night 18
DOVE
Toady, come on, it'll be all right.
TOADY
No, I think I'm gonna go home. It’s
cool...I’ll just sneak back in. See
you guys!
Toady turns. Cur steps in front of Toady's bike.
CUR
Listen dickweed. You're gonna stop
your whinin' and come with us. You're
not blowin' it for me because you're
scared. So get over it.
TOADY
Um. O.k. But. I ga go the bathroom.
DOVE
So go.
Dove and Cur look at Toady. A beat. Toady grins sheepishly.
CUR/DOVE
Toady!
EXT. TOADY'S HOUSE - NIGHT
A tennis ball SWISHES through a basketball hoop. A ladder is
propped up against the wall of this humble two story home.
CUR
(whispering)
How come he can just sneak in like
that?
DOVE
Dunno.
CUR
Man if I EVER got caught I’d get beaten
so bad.
DOVE
Not me.
19. Up All Night 19
Cur and Dove shoot baskets with a tennis ball.
CUR
What?
DOVE
I’d get a talkin’ to.
CUR
Are you kidding?
DOVE
I WISH they’d hit me. My Mom just sits
there and tells me how disappointed she
is. Makes me feel awful. I swear, I’d
RATHER get hit.
CUR
Well you’d like it at my house.
Dove leaps into the air to take a shot, he trips over Toady’s bike
and lands on his butt. Cur LAUGHS at the sight.
CUR (CONT’D)
How the hell did you do that?
Dove lays on his back, CRINGING in pain.
DOVE
I think I'm hurt.
CUR
Where?
DOVE
Butt bone.
CUR
Well just lay there a minute. You'll
be fine.
(beat)
Oh man.
DOVE
What?
CUR
Nothin.'
20. Up All Night 20
DOVE
What?! Tell me.
CUR
I think maybe you got a curse on you,
Dove.
DOVE
Shut up.
CUR
You shoulda left that stuff alone, like
I said. You never know what kinda curses
are hangin' out in dead people's stuff.
DOVE
So we took some toilet paper from the
trash...so what?
CUR
Woah. Woah. Woah. Leave me out of it.
YOU took some toilet paper from the trash.
Oh, man. And you sniffed those panties!
DOVE
I didn't SNIFF 'em! And I’m not
scared of any a’ that stuff anyway.
CUR
I’m not scared neither. But I got
no reason to be scared.
DOVE
Well what the heck am I supposed to
do now?
CUR
You could apologize to her.
A beat. Cur gives Dove a knowing look. It sinks in.
DOVE
Oh, no I'm not gonna do that. Not
tonight, no way.
CUR
You wanna be spooked the rest of your
21. Up All Night 21
life?
DOVE
I dunno Cur.
CUR
Toady's got one.
Toady makes his way down the ladder slowly.
TOADY
One what?
CUR
One teenie weenie. Everything come
out o.k.?
TOADY
(whispering)
You made a real splash. You guys be
quiet o.k.? My sister's room’s right here.
CUR
We'll be quiet on one condition.
TOADY
What's that?
CUR
You go get your Ouija board.
TOADY
No way. I'm not allowed to use that
anymore.
CUR
Why not?!
TODAY
Because it’s Black Magic. It’s evil.
Dove and Cur blink.
CUR
You allowed to pull an all nighter?
TOADY
No.
22. Up All Night 22
CUR
So...
TOADY
O.k. o.k.
CUR
You're allright Toady.
A beat, Toady narrows his eyes.
TOADY
You just say that when I do what
you want…Gimmie a minute.
CUR
Atta boy Toady!
Toady shoots Cur a look.
EXT. TOADY’S HOUSE-MOMENTS LATER
Dove and Cur sit and wait.
TOADY (O/S)
(whispering)
Cur! Hey Cur! Catch!
Toady drops a box of crackers and tosses the Ouija board down to
Cur.
ON THE GROUND. Toady walks the ladder to the garage. He looks
down at Dove.
TOADY (CONT’D)
You o.k.?
DOVE
Yeah. Broke my butt is all.
CUR
Toady, you had your shit, Dove,
you fractured your ass, we got the
weegee, now let's hook up with
these chicks!
DOVE
Hey Toad, how come you can
23. Up All Night 23
sneak in an’ out like that?
TOADY
It’s easy. My dad works nights
and Mom’s a heavy sleeper. I
could go do jumping jacks in her
room right now.
DOVE
No kiddin’?
CUR
I’d like to see you do more
than one jumpin’ jack.
Toady does three jumping jacks, smiling. Cur shakes his head.
TOADY
ONE! TWO! THREE!
CUR
Frickin’ puppet.
Cur laughs. Toady offers the opened box of crackers.
TOADY
Wheat Thin?
DOVE
What’re you doin’?
TOADY
Eatin' a cracker, what's it look like?
DOVE
I thought they were for later.
TOADY
They are. I've got a twisty.
Toady holds up a twist-tie.
CUR
Someday Toady, you're gonna make
your husband a very happy man.
Toady smiles at the compliment for a moment. Cur tosses the tennis
ball over his head. It BOUNCES LOUDLY around the open garage. The
24. Up All Night 24
boys walk down the driveway towards the street. A window SCREECHES
open. The boys FREEZE and look up.
BOYS' POV. Jessica, 9, blonde and sharp, peers down at them.
CUR
Oh man.
TOADY
(numb with disbelief)
Hey Jess, go back to sleep now.
You’re uh...dreaming.
Nice try. A smile envelopes Jessica's face.
TOADY (CONT’D)
My, um...sister, on the other hand,
is a very light sleeper.
EXT. TOADY'S DRIVEWAY - MOMENTS LATER.
Jessica straddles her K-Mart bike, the girl's version of Toady's.
Her face wears an eager smile and her feet, Grover slippers.
TOADY
(the BIG brother)
Half an hour, Jessica. Half an hour.
That's it!
JESSICA
Allright. In half an hour I'll go
wake up Mom and tell her that you’re
out with Dove and Cur.
TOADY
You know, maybe we should just stay
here you guys. You could crash on my
bean bags. I got Intellivision.
JESSICA
You’re not allowed to have sleepovers.
CUR
Chicks, Toady...chicks.
TOADY
Oh...yeah.
25. Up All Night 25
CUR
There’s three of them...gotta be
three of us.
TOADY
You should prolly find Germ, then.
Maybe he's down at the fort, huh?
Jessica CLAPS her hands.
JESSICA
The fort! Oh my God!
TOADY
Whatta we gonna do ‘bout HER?
Cur POKES Toady's soft chest for emphasis.
CUR
This SUCKS. Your sister SUCKS.
And Toady...you SUCK!
Toady looks to Dove. Dove can’t deny it. Neither can Toady.
EXT. THE WOODS - NIGHT
Cur and Dove lead the way. Jessica leans her bike against a tree.
A thousand cicadas whir. In the distance the clock chimes twelve.
DOVE
Watch out for all this mud you guys.
TOADY
Wow! Night crawlers! They’re all over!
Toady stares at a handful of worms. He jams them into his pocket.
TOADY
Hey...hey, I heard Germ was in a fight
today. In gym.
CUR
Yeah, fifth hour. Germ kicked Moondog's
ASS.
DOVE
It was kinda weird though, huh?
26. Up All Night 26
CUR
You never seen two guys fight before?
DOVE
They were naked. They were fightin' in
the showers. It was weird.
CUR
I thought it was cool. Nowhere to run,
nowhere to hide.
DOVE
It was weird.
(beat)
I can’t imagine hittin’ somebody...
you know, in the face like that.
CUR
You will. When you grow up.
DOVE
Who’d YOU ever hit in the face?
CUR
People...this kid. Once.
TOADY
So what happened in the shower?
DOVE
Moondog slipped and hit his head. Pretty
much ended it. He hadda go get stitches.
There was blood all over the place.
TOADY
Why were they fightin.’?
CUR
Moondog was checkin’ out Germ while he
was in the shower.
TOADY
Come on.
CUR
Serious.
DOVE
27. Up All Night 27
I heard it was about money or somethin.’
CUR
That's what Moondog wants you to think.
Jessica catches up as the trail turns and the fort appears in the
distance.
DOVE
Damn! You and Germ really changed
things down here.
CUR
Yeah, check it out. We added those
cross-beams for support and turned the
roof into a second floor. Cool, huh?
DOVE
Yeah. Hey...what happened to my cubby?
CUR
Your what?
DOVE
All my stuff.
CUR
I put it in the tree.
DOVE
Oh, I really don’t like people messin’
with my stuff.
TOADY
Wow, it’s awesome Cur!
JESSICA
Oh...my...God. The fort. Alison...is
going...to...die.
CUR
You...are going to die. If you don't
shut up.
TOADY
Hey, is that Germ?
CUR
28. Up All Night 28
I dunno. GERM! Hey Germ!
They follow a trail through the brush and approach the fort,
staring at a figure on the second floor.
CUR (CONT'D)
GERM?!
DOVE
What's he doin’?
TOADY
Layin’ there...
CUR
Hey GERM!
DOVE
Hey, that's new too.
Cur climbs the log ladder. Dove tests the ladder. The thing will
last thirty years.
CUR
Sweet, huh? Hey Germ...
Cur SIGHS. He kicks what everyone thought was Germ. Bark falls
onto Toady, Dove, and Jessica. Cur LAUGHS.
TOADY
You dick!
CUR
What'd you say Theodore?...Thought
so...Germ turned into a rotten log.
How you like that? Hey Dove, maybe
the spooks are knockin' off your
friends one at a time.
TOADY
Huh?
DOVE
Germ’s not MY friend.
TOADY
O.k. I got the creeps. Can we get
outta here?
29. Up All Night 29
CUR
Naw, c'mon. Check out the fort! It
rules! I RULE!
Dove walks up the log ladder.
DOVE
When did you guys do all this?
CUR
You weren't home.
TOADY
Dove, check it out. This chair’s made
out of a log. It's perfect.
CUR
Yeah, Germ did that. He’s got all
kinda tools. The guy is like the
Einstein of woodshop.
TOADY
This is amazing.
Jessica begins climbing the log ladder.
JESSICA
Wow.
CUR
Woah, woah, woah. Stop right there!
No chicks.
Jessica stops, her face flush.
TOADY
Well, what's she supposed to do?
CUR
I don't know? She could GO HOME!
TOADY
She will. No one'll know, Cur, come on.
CUR
She's not coming up here.
30. Up All Night 30
DOVE
We're gonna hafta let chicks up here
eventually. You know...
Jessica LAUGHS. Cur looks at Dove.
TOADY
Just for your information, my sister
is not a chick.
CUR
Know what? You're right, Dovey boy.
I was wrong. Germ had Misty up here last week.
TOADY
What if Jess promises to go home after
this?
A beat. Dove deflates. Toady looks to Jess. Jess nods.
DOVE'S POV. Cur nods. Jessica smiles and climbs the ladder.
DOVE
Um...when?
CUR
What...
DOVE
Wh...when did Misty come here?
CUR
I don't know. Last week.
DOVE
But.
CUR
Yeah, they came down here to smoke.
DOVE
Misty doesn't smoke.
TOADY
Guess she does now...
Toady scares the living shit out of everyone.
31. Up All Night 31
TOADY (CONT.)
OH MY GOD!!
DOVE/CUR/JESS
WHAT?!
TOADY
(looking at Jess)
I had this...I’ll tell you later. Um,
dream about...with Misty in it, I just
‘membered.
DOVE
Christ Toady.
CUR
(genuine)
That's right, you kinda like Misty,
huh Dove?
Dove shrugs.
JESSICA
Wow. The fort...is...so cool.
CUR
You never asked her out or nothin’...?
DOVE
I was waitin’ for the right time. I
wanted it to be perfect…
A branch SNAPS in the distance.
TOADY
What was that?
CUR
Creature.
Cur CLAPS his hands quietly.
JESSICA
WHAT?
DOVE
Cut it out Cur.
32. Up All Night 32
TOADY
Let's get outta here! What...whatta
you doin'?
Cur CLAPS again.
CUR
I’m calling the creature. Clap hands.
JESSICA
You guys are just tryin’ to scare me.
DOVE
Why'd you have to say that?
CUR
Oh, about Misty? I dunno. I probably
shoulda kept my mouth shut. I figured
you knew...nothin’ happened...I’m sure...
Dove bears all. No one hears.
DOVE
I mean. I don't really care. I'm
pretty much over her anyway. So maybe
she doesn’t like me after all. So what.
It doesn't really bother me. I mean I
think you can just like someone and...
you know just stay friends...
TOADY
(shouting to Cur)
What'd he get? What'd Germ get offa
Misty?
CUR
Dunno. You wanna break out that weegee?
A beat.
JESSICA
This is like, the greatest night.
They all sit. The boys glare at Jessica.
Toady pulls the Ouija from his backpack. Another branch SNAPS in
the distance.
33. Up All Night 33
DOVE
You guys hear that?
The four assume the position, hands on the pointer, eyes closed.
TOADY
Why exactly we doin’ this?
DOVE
It’s really cuz YOU’RE scared, isn’t it
Cur?...that we’re doin’ all this.
CUR
Eat me. You’re the one that got us
into this...now concentrate...eyes
closed.
A beat. CLAPS echo in the distance.
TOADY
You hear that?
DOVE
It’s probably some animal.
CUR
It’s the creature. I’m tellin’ you.
JESS
Um...would you stop saying that?
Cur LAUGHS, and raises his arms.
CUR
Cuuuurrrrreeeaaatttuuuurrre!
Let’s work that weegee, ladies.
Come on.
DOVE
It’s o.k., Jess.
(beat)
Now, I'm looking for the spirit
of a woman. Uh, she was killed by
a bookcase falling on top of her
and I would like to...
TOADY
Oh my God! I heard about that!
34. Up All Night 34
DOVE
I'd like to contact the spirit of that
woman so that I can apologize for trash
picking her toilet paper and panties and
for throwing them around the playground.
Toady busts up LAUGHING.
TOADY
That’s AWESOME!
CUR
Shhhh!
DOVE
So, um, lady, if you're out there, please
let us know.
Nothing from the Ouija pointer. A branch SNAPS. Cur opens an eye.
DOVE (CONT’D)
Are you out there?
The Ouija pointer starts moving.
CUR
(whispering)
Who's doin' that?
The kids peek at the board, shaking their heads. Jessica takes her
hands off. The pointer rests on the word 'no.'
TOADY
No.
CUR
No. No what?
JESSICA
Oh my God.
TOADY
It means the spirit's not out there
and we can all go home now. O.k.? O.k.
Toady begins to get up.
35. Up All Night 35
CUR
Sit down. C’mon.
DOVE
SOMETHIN’ made it say ‘no.’
The pointer moves back to the middle of the board.
CUR
You move it, Toady?
TOADY
Nuh uh. Swear.
CUR
Dove?
DOVE
Is the spirit?...Woah!
The pointer starts moving and rests on the letter 'D.'
CUR
D. Shoot. Who's got a pen?
Jessica rifles through Toady's backpack and writes on her palm.
The pointer moves again. CLAP CLAP in the distance.
JESSICA
D.
TOADY
Oh man. You hear that?!
CUR
Shhh. Come on.
The pointer stops on the letter A.
CUR (CONT’D)
A.
The pointer moves again.
TOADY
This is WEIRD you guys!
DOVE
36. Up All Night 36
You moving it?
TOADY
No!
CUR
N.
Jessica looks at her hand.
JESSICA
D. A. N. Dan?
DOVE
You said it was an old lady....
Cur shrugs. The pointer takes off again.
CUR
G.
JESSICA
G.
CUR
E.
JESSICA
E.
CUR
R.
JESSICA
R.
DOVE
It stopped.
TOADY
Huh...
CUR
That it?
TOADY
(whispering)
Ask her a question.
37. Up All Night 37
Jessica looks at her palm. Leaves RUSTLE at the foot of the tree.
The kids react. CLAP CLAP CLAP.
TOADY (CONT’D)
That the creature?
JESSICA
Dan Ger.
CUR
Dan Ger?
TOADY
You guys know a Dan? I'm not so
sure this weegee works right.
Jessica's jaw drops and she shows her hand to the others.
DOVE
Oh. Danger.
CUR
Oh. SHIT!
TOADY
DANGER!
JESSICA
AHHH!
Jessica SCREAMS at her hand. She spits and tries to wipe it off.
The kids toss the board and scramble to the ladder. Dove and Cur
trip over themselves.
The kids run through the woods. Jessica picks up her bike, Cur
runs ahead of them into the distance.
Dove stumbles, slips, and falls on the dewy ground.
Dove gets up. He takes off running and hits a BRICK WALL named JIM
CURTIS, 17. Jim wears a Members Only jacket over his football
jersey, a cocky smile, and the suggestion of a future moustache.
JIM
Easy there chief! Isn’t it past
your bedtime?
(beat)
38. Up All Night 38
You with my dickweed brother?
Dove shakes his head 'no.'
JIM (CONT'D)
Yeah you are. What are you morons
doin' down here?
DOVE
Nothin.'
Jim shoves him.
JIM
I said what are you MOrons doin'
down here at MY fort?
DOVE
It’s not YOUR fort.
JIM
S’cuse me? We re-built it, now it’s
ours. What’re you doin’ here?
DOVE
Meetin' some chicks. Cur and Germ re-
built it.
JIM
Oh, sure. Your chicks got names?
DOVE
I don't know.
JIM
Yeah. You're so full of it your
eyes are brown.
DOVE
Amanda, Sasha....
JIM
(laughing)
Crystal. I know those skanks. You
boys gettin' some action tonight?
Gonna get LAID?
DOVE
39. Up All Night 39
Maybe.
JIM
Yeah right. Where's my brother?
DOVE
I dunno.
JIM
Tell him to go home.
DOVE
Did, um, you hear the creature just now?
JIM
Yeah, I also heard your Mommy calling.
DOVE
Yeah.
JIM
Uh huh.
The two begin to turn away from one another.
JIM
Hey. You see Germ, tell him I'm
lookin' for him. He owes me money.
DOVE
Whatever.
Jim gets back in Dove's face.
JIM
What’d you say to me?
DOVE
Whatever...you want, Jim.
JIM
That's better.
The two walk away.
DOVE
Dick.
40. Up All Night 40
JIM
Dick.
EXT. SIDEWALK ADJACENT TO THE WOODS - NIGHT
Cur, Toady, and Jessica wait under a streetlight, catching their
breath. Dove walks up, kicking mud off his shoes.
DOVE
Hey.
CUR
Hey. You all right?
A beat. Dove nods.
TOADY
I think I'm gonna head home. Come on
let’s go Jess.
CUR
Absolutely not. We got stuff to do. We
got a date with chicks. We gotta hunt
the creature. An’ we gotta hook up with
Germ.
DOVE
Germ’s blowin’ us off.
CUR
He’s NOT blowin’ us off!
TOADY
You were serious about the creature huh?
CUR
Hell yeah.
TOADY
I...I don’t know.
DOVE
I'm havin' second thoughts, too. Maybe
we should just call it.
CUR
You pussies! You gonna let that weegee
board run your life?
41. Up All Night 41
DOVE
No, but. Hey, you were the one that was...
TOADY
Oh man, I left my Ouija.
CUR
We’re stuck anyway Dovey boy. Where
you gonna go? You’re “stayin’ at my
house,” and I’m “stayin’ at yours”!
DOVE
Maybe I’ll go over Toady’s. Huh Toad?
Crash on the bean bags.
TOADY
Yeah, um. I don’t know.
DOVE
But you said...
TOADY
I’m not so sure we can pull it off, you
know my dad and everything...coming home
from work and all...and now with Jess here.
Dove stares at Toady. Jessica grabs her handlebars. Cur karate
chops her hand.
CUR
Ah Ah Ahhhh.
JESSICA
Ow! Give it.
CUR
Nope. You don't get the bike ‘til you
start heading home.
JESSICA
I'm going.
TOADY
Cur come on.
CUR
And you!
42. Up All Night 42
Though Cur pushes him lightly, Toady stumbles and falls onto the
grass. Cur winces. Toady gets up.
TOADY
What was that for? JEEZ.
DOVE
Cur. Cut it out.
CUR
That's for you and your little
sister. This is all your fault!
DOVE
Cur...
TOADY
Why is it my fault?! You guys were loud
and woke Jess up!
CUR
You had to go home and poop.
(beat)
Toady if you didn't eat so Goddamn much
you wouldn't have to poop all the time
and we'd be out with the chicks right now.
It's all because of you! You'd better
hope your dad and the other damn
cop doesn't come down pokin' around the
woods because a' her. That’ll be the end
a’ the fort and the end a’ you!
Cur STOMPS and points at Jessica, who sits on the curb.
CUR (CONT'D)
You better keep your mouth shut!
Toady CHOKES on a breath, trying to speak while crying.
TOADY
I don't like you Cur. I never did.
You're a son of a bitch. And just for
your information, there’s TWO other
cops in this town...and they ALL know
about the fort.
Cur mimics Toady's breathing and mockingly rubs his eyes.
43. Up All Night 43
TOADY (CONT'D)
Make fun of me all you want. My Dad
was right. You two are trouble makers.
My folks'll find out I was hanging out
with you guys and I'll be grounded the
whole school year.
CUR
That's o.k. You're too chicken to leave
your house anyway.
DOVE
Wait a minute Toad. Whatta you mean 'you
guys?' It's just Cur, right?
TOADY
No, they said they didn't like either of
you.
DOVE
Well they’re thinkin' of Germ, not me.
CUR
What's that supposed to mean?
DOVE
It's just that...obviously they made a
mistake right? They're confusing Germ and
me. You know 'cuz where Cur and I used to
hang out all the time, NOW it's more like
Cur and Germ. So it's easy to see how they
could make a mistake, right?
CUR
You got a problem with Germ?
DOVE
Well, no. No. Not really. I just. I
don't like being blamed for things, you
know, things that Germ may have done,
that I haven't.
Dove nods, encouraging Toady to agree.
DOVE (CONT'D)
So, Toady, that makes sense, right, that
your folks just got Germ and me confused?
44. Up All Night 44
TOADY
I guess, but. Well, let me think. No,
now, my Dad definitely said 'I don't want
you hanging out with those troublemakers
Cur and Dove.' Yeah, he said Dove. I'm
sure he did.
CUR
We’re troublemakers!
DOVE
What the heck did I do?
TOADY
(laughing)
What my Dad didn't like, but you know, I
think was cool, was last year how you and
Cur went around town playing ding dong ditch.
DOVE
It was devil's night!
TOADY
Yeah. He got lotsa calls from people.
Mostly old folks. They were real upset.
He said that if you two were out raisin'
hell he didn't care, but when you bother
the folks in this town, folks he has to
answer to, why it's his responsibility as
a cop, off duty or not, to make sure it
stops. I thought it was pretty funny, though.
Toady LAUGHS, hanging onto his handlebars.
PRE LAP FOOTAGE. HUMBLE HOME, FALL - DAY.
Cur and Dove wear cardboard party hats and rollerskate away from an
exploding toilet paper bomb on a porch, a woman comes to the door.
TOADY (CONT'D)
When you guys made a bomb out of a toilet
paper roll and it scared Mrs. Robbins so
much that she STILL won't leave the house.
My mom goes over there on Wednesdays for
Meals on Wheels. I couldn't stop laughing
when I heard. Man did I get hit. Oh and
the time you two stole every watermelon
from outside the Deli. No one could figure
45. Up All Night 45
out what you guys did with them all. What
did you guys do with 'em?
Close on Dove, taking it all in. Cur staggers and LAUGHS.
DOVE
We, uh...
PRE-LAP MONTAGE. RIVERBANK - SUMMER AFTERNOON.
Cur and Dove tear apart a watermelon and eat it. They toss melons
into the river, their faces pink and wet.
CUR
We ate maybe two of 'em. We had to use
our hands, caveman style. Then we threw
the rest in the river. You shoulda seen
those things explode when they hit the
rocks. We kept running back and no one
was stoppin' us. We woulda gone inside
to get some more but they were closing.
That's when we realized we'd been at it
for TWO hours! MAN! We should go over
there right now!
DOVE
(shaking his head)
I can’t believe we did that.
CUR
I know! Wasn’t it AWESOME?!
TOADY
You guys were legends last summer!
CUR
That's it! We need to do something like
that tonight. That's just what you need
ol' Dovey boy!
DOVE
I don’t think so.
TOADY
Well, for one, the stores are all closed.
CUR
So we break in!
46. Up All Night 46
Cur takes their inaction as a ‘no.’
CUR (CONT’D)
You are so pathetic! I don’t know why
I hang out with you guys!
DOVE
Why don't you just go find Germ, he's
your juvie friend.
CUR
What?
DOVE
You heard.
CUR
Don’t talk trash about Germ, dude. You
don’t EVEN know.
DOVE
Well so far I don’t wanna know. And
I don’t like the way you been actin’ since
you two started hangin’ out.
CUR
What?...are you my MOM?
Cur pokes Dove in the chest.
CUR(CONT’D)
You’d better figure out who your friends
are this year or you're gonna be in
serious trouble.
(beat)
SERIOUS TROUBLE.
Dove knocks Cur’s hand away and turns.
CUR (CONT’D)
Come to think of it Dove, you’re always
just along for the ride, aren’t you?
You never do shit...
DOVE
Shut up.
CUR
47. Up All Night 47
The toilet paper bomb, the watermelons.
Everything. You just hang out and watch.
Maybe I’m gettin’ tired a’ entertainin’
your ass. When you gonna do somethin’
on your own, Dove? Huh?
Dove has no answer. Toady nudges Jessica, asleep on the grass.
TOADY
Hey Jess. Jess!
EXT. TOWN STREETS - NIGHT
The three boys walk down the middle of the street.
CUR
She better not say a word.
TOADY
Fifty fifty. She either will or she won't.
CUR
You're scholarship material, Toad.
TOADY
For real?
A beat. Toady digs in his pockets, grimacing. He stops.
DOVE
Whatta you doin'?
TOADY
Oh man. I forgot...those worms I
found...
Toady pulls a handful of worms from his pocket. They're coated in
a milky substance and spill over his hands into the street.
TOADY
Oh man! It's all over my hands!
CUR
Dude, that's foul. They were screwin'
in your pocket!
TOADY
They were not.
48. Up All Night 48
CUR
What's all that white shit?!
Toady tosses the worms and wipes his hands on his pants.
TOADY
Oh, man. There's somethin' else in
here.
Toady cringes while digging. A beat. Cur and Dove watch. Toady
holds up a slimy wad of bills and smiles.
TOADY (CONT'D)
Yes!
EXT. FAST FOOD DRIVE THRU - NIGHT
The three stand at the speaker. Toady counts the bills.
DOVE
I'll have a...whatta you want?
TOADY
Get some fries.
DOVE
Two fries? Two orders of regular fries.
CASHIER (O/S)
Window two, drive through, please.
The boys walk through.
AT WINDOW TWO. Cashier is attractive and 17.
CASHIER
This is a drive-thru. I'm not s’possa
serve you, ‘less you're drivin’ through,
you could get hit by a car.
The four look around. Not a car, not a soul, not a sound.
CASHIER (CONT'D)
Anyway, I can't serve you.
CUR
We could get hit by a car now, whether
49. Up All Night 49
you give us the fries or not.
CASHIER
Hey. You're a Curtis! You're Jim's
kid brother, aren't you?
Cur nods reluctantly. Cashier does the little dance.
CASHIER (CONT'D)
Jimmy! Ooo! He is a total babe.
Toady hands the money over. Cashier counts the sticky bills.
CASHIER (CONT’D)
They have a game tonight?
CUR
Yeah...No...I don’t know.
CASHIER
A STONE FOX. He drives that Barracuda.
TOADY
Barracuda!
CUR
Hey. You like to party?
Nice try. Cashier hands the food over.
CASHIER
What?!
DOVE
Could we all get trays?
Cashier stares. Dove clutches an invisible tray.
DOVE (CONT’D)
Trays...
EXT. FAST FOOD TABLES - NIGHT
Ketchup squirts onto fries in Toady's hand. The boys sit under two
colorful metal umbrellas. Dove pulls out his retainer and sets it
on a napkin.
TOADY
50. Up All Night 50
Why they make you wear that thing?
DOVE
Nobody MAKES you do anything.
CUR
Hand me some fries Turd.
Toady hands Cur some fries.
TOADY
Yeah.
DOVE
I want my teeth to stay straight so
I wear it. Not cuz anybody makes me.
TOADY
Oh...o.k. They NEVER give you ‘nuff
ketchup.
CUR
Nope.
TOADY
(mouth full)
Never 'nuff fries neither.
Cur opens the end of a ketchup packet, sticks it in his mouth and
sucks the ketchup out. Then he jams some fries into his mouth.
DOVE
Jeez. You do that at home?
CUR
(face full of food)
Mmmf?
DOVE
My Mom’d kill me if she knew I was
eatin’ here...
CUR
You mean she’d make you feel bad.
(beat)
My folks’ idea of cookin’ is using
our own ketchup and napkins.
51. Up All Night 51
Toady LAUGHS. Cur FLICKS a ketchuppy fry at Toady. It hits him in
the face. He’s happy for more food.
CUR (CONT’D)
Think that’s funny?
TOADY
Oh my God!...I gotta tell you this dream
I had! The one about Misty...we were at
the fort!...You like her, huh Dove?
Dove shrugs, picking up a fry and examining it.
DOVE
I dunno.
CUR
She hooked up with Germ.
DOVE
You don’t know what happened.
Cur shrugs.
TOADY
ANY WAY I was making out with her,
right?
Cur and Dove LAUGH.
TOADY(CONT’D)
In the dream. It was down
at the fort, only it wasn't the fort.
You know how that is. It was your
kitchen...yours Dove. Anyway, so
I'm making out with her and I start
moving to second base, right there
next to your fridge, by the cupboard
where your guys’s cookies are.
Toady eats a handful of fries, chewing and talking.
TOADY (CONT'D)
And I undo her shirt and try to take
her bra off, and I can't, you know
I've never really seen one of those
things close up, you know with live
boobs in it. So she helps me
52. Up All Night 52
get her bra undone, it was unreal!
Sorry Dove. Anyway, her bra comes
off and there are her boobs, well,
obviously, right? But here's the
weird part...ready?
CUR
Like you and Misty isn't weird enough?
TOADY
She had chocolate chips for nipples.
Dove and Cur stop eating and stare at Toady who munches away.
Toady makes circular motions, hands at his chest.
TOADY (CONT’D)
Chocolate chips for nipples. Isn't
that weird?
Cur and Dove stare. It’s too weird to laugh.
TOADY
(as if they didn’t hear)
HER NIPPLES WERE CHOCOLATE CHIPS!
DOVE
Um...yeah...we get it Toad.
CUR
Dude, you ever talk to a shrink?
TOADY
I'm sorry, man. I mean sorry that
your, the girl that you like was
with me in my dream Dove. I haven't
been thinkin' about her at all,
honest. You know...much, except for
in math.
Toady licks his fingers and stares at his hands.
TOADY (CONT’D)
Oh...I'm gonna be sick. The worms.
EXT. OLD WODDEN FENCE - NIGHT
53. Up All Night 53
Toady spits, hunched over. Dove tosses the trays over and the boys
climb the fence. In the distance the clock chimes two.
EXT. FIELD - NIGHT
The boys get a running start and jump onto the trays, sledding down
the dewy hill.
MOMENTS LATER.
They sit on their trays. BA DA DEEP. Dove looks at his watch.
DOVE
Two A.M...
TOADY
For real?
CUR
Didn’t you guys hear the clock tower?
TOADY
That is a cool watch.
DOVE
Thanks.
TOADY
That a...birthday present?
Dove shakes his head ‘no.’
TOADY (CONT’D)
What for?
Dove shrugs, looking at Cur.
DOVE
Well, turns out I’m skipping eighth
grade.
TOADY
Wow! You’re kiddin’! Why didn’t you
tell us?
Cur looks up, his heart sinks.
DOVE
54. Up All Night 54
I dunno.
TOADY
Wow...I never...I mean...it’s cool
to know somebody that’s real smart
an’ stuff.
DOVE
It’s no big deal.
TOADY
Skippin’ a grade. That’s huge. I
bet you could maybe go to a good
college...and stuff...you know...some
day. Jeez! In a couple years even!
Get out of this town and maybe do
something.
Dove looks at Cur. Cur pokes his fingers into the grass.
TOADY
Cur, isn’t that cool?
CUR
Yeah.
DOVE
Thanks.
TOADY
We don’t hafta worry ‘bout skippin’
any grades, you an’ me, huh, Cur?
Cur knocks the dirt off a grass chunk and tosses it. Dove flips
his retainer around. Toady wears a goofy smile, staring at Dove.
CUR
Nope.
TOADY
Hey maybe you’ll get that smarty pants
award when you graduate...like your
sisters did?
DOVE
Valedictorian.
(beat)
I have to. If I don’t...I’ll be
55. Up All Night 55
the first in our family...NOT to.
TOADY
Cool.
DOVE
Yeah.
CUR
We should probably get on over to the
parking lot...you know, the CHICKS...?
Dove feels Toady staring at him.
DOVE
Would you stop?
TOADY
Sorry. It’s just REALLY cool. Hey,
on the way, can we just go by my house?
CUR
Don’t tell me you gotta move your bowels
again.
TOADY
Naw, I just wanna make sure Jess made it
in o.k.
CUR
Allright.
TOADY
Hey Cur maybe your brother could drive
us to the parking lot.
CUR
What makes you think he’d do ANYthing
for us?
TOADY
I was just thinkin.’
CUR
He’s a dick. Get it through your head.
He's always been a total dickhead and he
always will be.
56. Up All Night 56
Cur weighs a grass chunk.
CUR (CONT'D)
He did one cool thing, though. I
never told you guys. You know he
plays the drums...used to...
PRE-LAP FOOTAGE: INT. CUR'S PARENTS' BEDROOM LAST SUMMER - NIGHT
MONTAGE: Jim assembles his drumset, Cur watches from the hallway.
CUR (CONT’D)
Well he sucks. But last summer, God
I don't know how he thought of this,
but one week my Dad was ridin’ him hard
and so he waits until our folks are sound
asleep, right, and then he starts
bringin' the parts of his drumset up-
stairs to my Mom and Dad's room. He
had a great looking set. So without
makin’ a sound, he puts together the
whole drumset at the foot of their bed.
EXT. GRASS – NIGHT
Dove and Toady listen intently.
CUR (CONT’D)
He sits down on the stool, and my folks
are still sound asleep right, it's, I
don't know, three in the morning.
Anyway, I'm crouched in the doorway
watching, terrified, cause I’m about to
bust up laughing, and he'd kill me if
he knew I was there...KILL me. So I wait...
PRE-LAP MONTAGE: INT. CUR’S PARENTS’ BEDROOM - LAST SUMMER
CUR
...And I swear he was just doing this
to piss me off, but he sits there for
FIVE minutes just lookin' at his drums
and then maybe moving them a little.
Getting them just right. I was gonna
die. And the whole time my Mom and
Dad are sound asleep, three feet away,
no idea that right at the foot of the
bed is Jimmy and his drumset. That
57. Up All Night 57
he got for Christmas, by the
way. FINALLY he picks up his sticks,
closes his eyes, and his arms go up
in the air. He taps the sticks to-
gether. Just as he's done tappin', I
notice my Mom and Dad are startin' to
wake up. My Dad's eyes open, and my
Mom starts to move a little. A split
second later, he's launched into the
loudest freaking drum solo I've ever
heard. It was like Neil Whatever,
the dude from Rush. Anyway, he's all
over the set. Bangin’ on the toms, the
cymbals, the snare drum, I had to cover
my ears it was so loud! It was so cool,
but it was kinda scary though. My Dad’s
got a heart condition. They jumped
outta bed and started doin' this weird
dance thing.
EXT. GRASS - NIGHT
Cur demonstrates, convulsing, arms in the air. Toady points.
TOADY
Yeah yeah! The bullet dance!
CUR
Yeah. The bullet dance, like in a
war movie, gettin' sprayed from an
airplane. It was so sweet. They
flew outta bed and started yellin'
and jumpin' around.
PRE-LAP MONTAGE: INT. CUR’S PARENTS’ BEDROOM – LAST SUMMER
Thick CUR’S DAD and thin CUR’S MOM, both 40’s, jump out of bed.
CUR (CONT’D)
But the drums were so loud, my folks
weren't making any sound at all,
just movin’ their mouths. It’s like
it all happened in slow motion or
something. Scared the HELL
out of 'em. Man, my Dad pounded on
Jimmy after. Beat him silly. We
thought he was gonna die. My Mom
hadda pull him off. They took him
58. Up All Night 58
to the Emergency Room. Fourteen
stitches in his head. And he never
saw those drums again.
EXT. GRASS - NIGHT
DOVE
What did you do?
CUR
Whatta you think? I stood there and
watched. Anyway, Jimmy was o.k. turns out.
They went to bed, and just left the drums
sittin' there cuz it was the middle of
the night, you know.
PRE-LAP FOOTAGE: INT. CUR’S PARENTS’ BEDROOM – LAST SUMMER
Jim’s drums sit under the dappled moonlight from the window.
CUR (CONT’D)
All night long I laid in bed thinkin'
of those drums. Those drums and
those cymbals and none of it movin’
or makin' a sound. Just sittin' there.
All that noise, just, waitin' to happen.
But not...you know? I wanted to go
wail on 'em like Jimmy did, I swore
I was gonna. You know, get my Dad
back. I'd count to ten and I'd do
it. And then I just...didn't.
EXT. GRASS – NIGHT
CUR
Guess I shoulda maybe.
DOVE
Wow. That’s a beautiful story Cur.
CUR
Beautiful? What the Hell’s wrong with
you?! I watched my Dad beat the crap
outta my brother!
(beat)
That’s when I swore I’d never do any-
thing nice for him ever again. And you
know what? I haven’t. Not even on
59. Up All Night 59
Father’s Day. Not on Christmas. Never.
I don’t even look at him in the eyes.
I won’t. Most of the time I go right
past the house if I know he’s home...
and I come to the fort or whatever.
DOVE
Jeez Cur. I don’t know what to say.
TOADY
Yeah.
Cur shrugs.
CUR
Anyway, that's the only half-way
decent thing my brother's ever done.
Other than that, he's pretty much a
dick.
(beat)
Oh, he gave me a nickel for the March
Of Dimes once.
DOVE
Oh yeah. I totally forgot. I saw
him in the woods.
CUR
What?
DOVE
Yeah, when we were down there. I forgot
to tell you.
CUR
Well what did he say?
DOVE
Nothing really.
CUR
He was going to the fort, wasn't he?
DOVE
I dunno. Sounded like he was lookin'
for Germ. I told him we were meetin’
those chicks and that was it.
60. Up All Night 60
CUR
Those guys are gonna ruin the fort.
Havin’ parties an’ stuff...
TOADY
Oh man! My Ouija board.
DOVE
What do you make of that stuff with
the Ouija, anyway?
CUR
I guess there's nothin' to worry about.
TOADY
Whatta you talkin' 'bout Cur? The
weegee said 'Danger.'
CUR
Actually, Toady, it said 'no,' first
and then it said 'danger.' So there's
really nothing to worry about. No.
Danger. Get it?
TOADY
So what made you run?
CUR
I just ran cuz you guys ran.
DOVE
You didn’t see the creature?
Cur shakes his head and CLAP CLAPS.
TOADY
Cut it out.
CUR
Cuuurrrreeeeaaaattttuuurrre!
Cur CLAP CLAPS.
TOADY
Cut it out.
DOVE
It’s a bunch a bull.
61. Up All Night 61
CUR
This was s’possed to be a creature
hunt...remember?
TOADY
We were also s’possa go to a party.
And eat a submarine sandwich.
DOVE
There’s no party.
CUR
Just the creature.
TOADY
It’s made up.
CUR
Germ and I saw it at the fort last
week.
Dove shakes his head.
TOADY
You were just tryin’ to scare Jess
I thought.
Cur makes a cross and spits.
CUR
I swear to God. On my sister's
grave.
DOVE
Don't. Don't do that, dude.
CUR
You don't believe me?
TOADY
What's it look like then?
CUR
Honestly?...you’re gonna laugh.
TOADY
We won’t laugh.
62. Up All Night 62
CUR
E.T.
Dove and Toady LAUGH.
DOVE
The extra-testical?
TOADY
Oh jeez.
DOVE
Come on.
CUR
They're like four feet tall, kind of
hairy with long arms and big heads...
and the mothers are fast! Really fast.
DOVE
No way...
TOADY
Whatta you mean 'they'?
CUR
We saw TWO of 'em on the football
field one night.
DOVE
Come on.
CUR
Swear to God.
DOVE
Why would you EVER go down there
again?
CUR
Why? Because our FORT’S down there,
that's why. Germ and I busted our
asses this summer fixin’ it up. I
don't care if Rambo comes down there.
That's our fort, and nobody's gonna
mess with it. No damn COP, no damn
ADULT, no damn CREATURE.
63. Up All Night 63
Cur makes CLAPPY sounds.
TOADY
Stop doin' that.
CUR
Creatures.
TOADY
I'm never goin' down there again.
CUR
You guys are pussies.
DOVE
Cur, you didn't have to swear on
your sister, man.
CUR
I know.
TOADY
Oh yeah. How's everything going with
that anyway?
CUR
What the hell you think?! It sucks,
you idiot. My sister died.
TOADY
("understanding")
Yeah. Sometimes I wish Jess would
die, I swear.
A beat. Cur looks at Toady. Toady's smile fades fast.
CUR
I am gonna POUND on you one of
these days Toady.
DOVE
It's o.k., Cur.
CUR
It's not o.k.! Toady...you got
shit for brains.
64. Up All Night 64
TOADY
Yeah. You know, I’m gettin’ tired,
I might go home.
CUR
Suit yourself.
EXT. TOWN STREETS - NIGHT
The three move down the street, looking through trash.
DOVE
Go on!
Cur nods and slugs Dove in the stomach. THUNK. They all LAUGH.
Dove pulls the tray from under his shirt and sets it in the trash.
DOVE (CONT’D)
Gee, maybe we shoulda returned those.
TOADY
This street always sucks.
CUR
Nice block, too. You'd think
they'd have somethin' to throw out.
Greedy bastards…share the wealth!
DOVE
There it is.
EXT. MISTY'S HOUSE - NIGHT
There it is. An upper middle class home. Light dances on the
moonlit backyard pool. Dove, Toady, and Cur stare at the Taj
Mahal.
CUR
It's not like she's even awake.
DOVE
Yeah but she's home. Somewhere up
there, in one of those rooms, in bed,
is Misty.
CUR
...And Germ.
65. Up All Night 65
Toady LAUGHS. Dove punches Toady.
DOVE
Shut up.
TOADY
Cur said it, not me.
DOVE
You're closer.
Cur smiles. That’s his brand of logic.
CUR
Let’s go!
DOVE
I...dunno...
EXT. MISTY'S POOL - NIGHT
Close on Cur, his face drops out of frame. Toady's face appears.
Close on Dove, his face drops out of frame. The boys GIGGLE as
they bob up and down in Misty's pool.
DOVE
Shhh! We gotta be quiet.
CUR
O.k. o.k.
TOADY
Hey, which window is Misty's?
DOVE
Up top on the right....I think.
CUR
(as if)
You THINK. You’re totally obsessed.
DOVE
So...
CUR
Hey Dove...’member when we were here
last week? An’ me an’ Misty were
sittin’ over there and you were sittin’
66. Up All Night 66
on the side of the pool?
BOB BOB go the boys in the pool.
DOVE
Yeah?
CUR
You were wearin’ them ol’ shorts instead of
a bathing suit.
DOVE
Um yeah...
CUR
Your balls were hangin’ out.
DOVE
(panicked)
WHAT?!
Dove doggy paddles furiously. A massive LAUGH starts building in
Toady, like a tea kettle on the verge.
CUR
Dude...your balls...
DOVE
Do you think Misty...
CUR
Oh yeah.
DOVE
...saw?
That does it. Toady BUSTS out LAUGHING. His body flails up and
down in tears. Light from the porch suddenly appears on the boys’
faces.
CUR
Oh shit!
The boys jump out of the pool and run through the yard to the
street.
EXT. MISTY'S STREET - NIGHT
67. Up All Night 67
Dove, Cur, and Toady run down the street dripping wet. Toady
LAUGHS and hold his chest.
EXT. TOWN STREETS - NIGHT
The boys turn a corner and move in and out of dappled shadows in
the moonlight.
EXT. SCHOOL PARKING LOT ENTRANCE – NIGHT
The boys slow to a walk. The clock chimes THREE. Toady takes a
JOLT cola from his backpack, takes a swig and passes it around.
CUR
Nice.
DOVE
You’ve been holding out on us,
Toad.
TOADY
Forgot I had it. This stuff
packs a punch.
DOVE
Dude...why didn’t you say anything
the other day?
CUR
What?
(gulping some cola)
About your balls?
DOVE
Yeah.
TOADY
(in tears)
She saw your SACK.
CUR
Well what was I supposed to say? With
Misty right there, ‘Hey Dove...your
balls are hangin’ out!’?
DOVE
Well yeah...I dunno. Think she really...
68. Up All Night 68
CUR
Yeah dude.
DOVE
...saw, huh?
TOADY
Guys?
The boys enter the lot. Amanda, Sasha, and Crystal stand in the
distance, drinking from a bottle in a brown paper bag.
Toady downs the rest of the JOLT.
CUR
Hey look at that. Cool, they see
us. You boys ready?
TOADY
Think I’d rather go hunt the creature.
EXT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT
The three boys, smiling, terrified, approach the girls.
CUR
Evenin' ladies. This here’s Toady.
TOADY
Hi. Yooouuuu guys like to PARTY?
AMANDA
You boys been talkin' it up, haven't
you?
CUR
Huh?
CRYSTAL
We heard you were gonna make love to us.
CUR
We...what?! Who said...
AMANDA
Talkin’ trash gets you in trouble,
honey!
69. Up All Night 69
DOVE
What’s goin’ on?
AMANDA
(pointing at Cur)
You’re goin’ DOWN.
CUR
Huh?!
DOVE
Oh...shit...
Amanda throws Cur down and straddles his chest. Sasha twists
Dove’s arm behind his back and Crystal kicks Toady in the groin.
AMANDA
Right now, smart ass! You’re gonna
pay
DOVE
Cur!
Cur struggles. Amanda undoes his pants.
AMANDA
This is what you want, right?
CUR
Let me go!
AMANDA
Not a chance, sweetheart. Sasha help
me get his pants down.
Sasha shoves Dove over her leg and he goes down. Cur WHEEZES.
CUR
I'm sorry. I'm sorry!
SASHA
Not as sorry as you're gonna be!
Crystal kicks Toady again and joins the pile on Cur. Sasha pulls
Cur's pants down. Cur breathes in spastic bursts.
AMANDA
I thought you wanted some?! Are we
70. Up All Night 70
trashy enough for you? Huh?
CRYSTAL
Aw man! His shoes!
AMANDA
He’s got Tighty Whitey’s! Take ‘em down!
CUR
No! Please don't. I'm sorry! Toady!
Dove! Where are you guys?! Help!
Dove tries to get around Crystal. She pushes him back again.
DOVE
GET OFFA HIM!
SASHA
Yeah right.
AMANDA
You assholes said you were gonna do
us? Well, now's your chance! Let's
go you little piece of shit!
CUR
No! Don't! I'm sorry. Please.
Toady and Dove try to get around Crystal and Sasha, as Amanda sits
on Cur's chest taunting him.
CUR (CONT’D)
Guys?! I. Can’t. Breathe.
AMANDA
What should I do now...huh?
CUR
I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Sasha and Crystal kick and punch at Toady and Dove. Amanda pulls
at Cur's underwear. Cur SCREAMS.
AMANDA
Oh, I’m takin’ ‘em off honey!
CUR
NO! Don’t…please…
71. Up All Night 71
Amanda pulls down Cur's underwear. Cur is still.
AMANDA
Serves you right.
Amanda stops and stands, and offers her hand to Cur. Cur covers
himself and cries. Finally he reaches up. Amanda turns her offer
into ‘the finger.’
AMANDA (CON’T)
(to the girls)
Let’s get outta here.
CRYSTAL
Piece a shit!
AMANDA
Watch what you say about people, you
dickheads.
SASHA
Next time you might not be so lucky.
CRYSTAL
Yeah.
The girls walk off. Cur lies on the ground on his stomach, pants
at his ankles and underwear at his thighs.
A beat.
A bottle SHATTERS, the girls’ LAUGHS ECHO across the field.
Cur lies motionless. Any movement right now would make it real.
A beat.
Dove approaches Cur.
DOVE
Hey...I'm sorry Cur.
CUR
Go away!
TOADY
We tried to get them off...but...
72. Up All Night 72
CUR
Shut up...shut the fuck up!
Cur closes his eyes and pulls up his pants, hyperventilating.
CUR (CONT’D)
You tell anyone about this and I'll
kill you. I’m not kidding! I'll
sneak in your room at night and
I'll use the back end of a hammer
and claw your freakin’ eyes out. I
will...I'll do it...if you tell ANYONE.
Cur straightens himself and sits up, blowing his nose on his shirt.
DOVE
Jesus Cur, we won't. O.k.?
CUR
I'll claw your eyes out. I will.
You'll walk around like FREAKS...
TOADY
We won't, Cur...jeez.
CUR
If I hear about this again, I'll
know who to beat the shit out of.
DOVE
O.k. But. What...uh...what about
the chicks, Cur?
CUR
They know our names! Oh my God! They
know who we are! They know my brother!
Close on Dove. It's sinking in.
DOVE
Oh man...Jim.
TOADY
Why did they say that?! Why did she
do that to you?!
Cur lays back down, his face in the turf, smothering his tears.
73. Up All Night 73
Dove looks towards the street.
A Barracuda pulls up, SQUEALING into the parking lot adjacent to
the field. Headlights sweep across the boys. They freeze.
TOADY
Wanna run?
It’s too late. A BODY is dumped out and the car SQUEALS off.
DOVE
What the hell?
Dove and Toady walk to the lot.
IN THE PARKING LOT. GERM, 14, looks like trouble, but that’s what
makes him attractive. He’s a mess, his face and hair crusty with
blood.
DOVE
Germ? Hey Germ.
Dove offers his hand. In the field behind Dove, Cur stands.
GERM
Don’t touch me.
TOADY
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
GERM
Who are you guys?
DOVE
Dove, remember? And this is Toady.
We’re Cur’s friends. You o.k.?
GERM
Yeah...fine.
Germ COUGHS up a lump of blood and spits.
TOADY
You don’t look so good.
GERM
What's goin' on?
74. Up All Night 74
TOADY
Oh man...you missed it.
GERM
What?
DOVE
NOTHIN.' We should get you to the
hospital or something.
GERM
No.
DOVE
Who did this to you Germ?
GERM
Some...guys...
Germ SPITS another blood clump. He closes his eyes. Cur comes up
behind them, fighting tears, unnoticed.
DOVE
We should get you taken care of or
somethin’ huh?
TOADY
I'm thinkin' we should all go home,
maybe. Before they come back. We
should go home and go right to bed.
DOVE
We gotta get Germ to a doctor.
CUR
How we gonna do that?
The boys look at Cur, surprised to hear his voice.
GERM
Oh hey Cur. What happened to you?
Cur shakes his head, his face bright red and wet from tears.
TOADY
We could call a ambulance.
75. Up All Night 75
GERM
No. My Dad's the paramedic.
DOVE
So...
TOADY
He is? I didn't know that. Cool.
He like his job? My Dad’s one of
the cops. Wow, EMT. Emergency
Medical Technician.
DOVE
Toady...
GERM
Not right now, it's not. I can't go
to the hospital. He'll find out.
DOVE
Well he’s gonna find out sooner or
later. Look at you.
GERM
I just need time to think.
TOADY
Hey. What about your brother, Cur?
GERM
No.
CUR
What aBOUT my brother?!
DOVE
Yeah, maybe your brother could take
Germ in HIS car. To a different
hospital or something.
GERM
No...
CUR
Would you guys stop?!
TOADY
But Germ needs a ride. Ow…Barracuda…
76. Up All Night 76
CUR
Toady I swear to God.
(to Germ)
Can you walk?
GERM
I guess..
DOVE
We should probably get outta here.
CUR
Think we should cut through the woods,
Germ?
GERM
Yeah, sure.
Germ puts one arm around Cur and they hit the trail. Dove and
Toady stand still.
CUR
Guys?
Dove steps onto the trail.
DOVE
Let’s go Toad.
A beat. Toady stares. He chews his lip, then submits.
EXT. WOODS - NIGHT
The four boys walk along. A band of cicadas begins to whir.
GERM
You guys seen any cops?
DOVE
Not yet.
TOADY
1087…Juveniles out past curfew,
we’d be in it deep.
CUR
Only one juvvie here, huh Dove?
GERM
77. Up All Night 77
There’s a curfew?
DOVE
Yeah. Hey, you guys smell smoke?
A beat. The four stare at one another, then take off through the
woods. Toady brings up the rear.
EXT. THE WOODS – MOMENTS LATER
Cur, Germ, and Dove run past. A beat. Toady ambles by. CLAP CLAP
CLAP from behind him. He turns and runs FASTER.
EXT. THE FORT – MOMENTS LATER
Toady arrives and walks up to Cur, Dove, and Germ who sit around
the trashed fort and a bunch of empty beer bottles. The place has
been destroyed. Only the ladder and a section of the top floor
remain. The fire pit smolders.
TOADY
Hey guys! Holy crap. What happened?
GERM
Gee, I think the fort mighta got wrecked,
Toady, but I’m not sure. Guys?
TOADY
Which one of you was behind me? On
the trail.
Nothing.
GERM
Creature!
Germ and Cur climb up the ladder to what’s left of the roof.
Dove begins climbing up. Germ CLAP CLAPS.
DOVE
Whatta you doin’ Germ?
GERM
Callin' 'em.
DOVE
Um...why?
GERM
SO WE CAN CHECK ‘EM OUT!
Cur CLAP CLAPS.
78. Up All Night 78
DOVE
They actually come when you do that?
CUR
(to Germ)
Do they?
Germ shrugs and CLAPS. Toady walks around under the fort.
DOVE
You think that...
GERM
Shhhh! Creatures.
TOADY (O/S)
There's no CREATURES.
CLAP CLAP.
CUR
You said you heard 'em down there on
the trail, Toad.
TOADY (O/S)
That was you guys.
DOVE
Toady, we weren't clapping.
TOADY (O/S)
Yeah right.
Toady pokes through the beer bottles. He grabs the board. It’s in
two pieces.
TOADY
My Ouija board is busted in two.
CUR
That’s not good.
DOVE
What are you doin’?
TOADY (O/S)
Takin' my Ouija board and I'm goin'
home!
GERM
(mocking, rubbing his eyes)
79. Up All Night 79
Takin mu weegee 'n um goin' home!
TOADY
Screw you, Germ. You feel better
all of a sudden?
Germ LAUGHS, that’s all he wanted.
GERM
I’m startin’ to like you Toady.
TOADY
I can't find my little pointer.
GERM
Why don’t you look in your pants?
Cur, Dove and Germ LAUGH. Dove holds up the Ouija pointer.
DOVE
It’s up here, Toad.
CLAP CLAP CLAP. Toady picks up a beer bottle and tips it over.
TOADY
You guys hear that?
DOVE
It was Cur.
CUR
(winking to Germ)
No it wasn't.
TOADY
I’m confused, guys, what really happened?
CUR
How would we know, Toad?
DOVE
We walked up and saw this...
GERM
Hey, maybe it was the creature.
CUR
Dude...the monkey’s got FIRE!
Toady pulls the burned edge of his Ouija box out of the smoldering
fire. He holds it up to Dove. CLAP CLAP CLAP.
80. Up All Night 80
TOADY
Dove. What'm I gonna do?
DOVE
We'll buy you a new weegee.
TOADY
Cut it out you guys. I need to put
it back tonight!
GERM/CUR
CREATURE!
THE TOP FLOOR. Dove turns to Cur and Germ. Cur shakes his head
'no.' Germ shakes his head. CLAP CLAP CLAP.
THE GROUND. Toady looks up at Dove.
TOADY
Tell those guys to cut it out.
Toady's POV. Cur, Germ, and Dove look down at him. Their hands
all visible, gripping the roof of the fort. CLAPPING continues.
DOVE
Toad. That’s not us.
TOADY
Shut up...really?
GERM
Well I’m not clappin’ my ass cheeks.
The guys show Toady their hands. CLAP CLAP. Toady looks into the
distance. He drops the Ouija box and runs up the ladder.
TOADY
AHHHHH!
Germ CLAPS his hands. Nothing. He CLAPS again. Nothing.
A beat. Silence.
GERM
Nothin.’
CUR
Nice goin’ Toad.
DOVE
I don't mind so much.
81. Up All Night 81
CUR
You wouldn’t.
Germ CLAP CLAP CLAPS. A beat. Nothing.
GERM
(whispering)
We should get outta here.
CUR
(to Dove)
Pussies, you AND Toad.
DOVE
(whispering)
Shut up Cur, you were just as scared
as the rest of us.
CUR
BullSHIT.
GERM
C’mon, let’s hit that party.
Dove looks at his watch. He taps it, then puts it to his ear.
TOADY
Cops broke it up.
GERM
No they didn’t...
DOVE
But...we heard...
GERM
Yeah, yeah. They tell everyone that to
keep people like YOU from showin’ up.
It’s an allnighter, let’s go.
TOADY
Well...Hey...that’s not fair.
GERM
(smiling)
Life’s not fair, Toady. That’s why
you’re you. And… I’m me.
EXT. STREET - NIGHT
The four walk down the middle of the street.
82. Up All Night 82
CUR
Damn this’s gonna be a hike. Party’s up
by the clock, huh?
GERM
I’m gonna turn you on to a little
shortcut.
TOADY
It would be so great if we had your
brother's car right now, Cur. Ow!
BarraCUDA! LOVE that tune.
CUR
Toady. Listen to me. You are never
going to ride in that car. NEVER...
as long as you live.
TOADY
O.k...Jeez.
A beat. They walk in silence.
GERM
I was in that car.
CUR
What?
GERM
Tonight. I was in your brother's car.
CUR
Whatta you talkin’ about?
DOVE
Oh man...
GERM
Jim...
Toady does the dance, not knowing any better.
TOADY
(sarcastic)
Ooooo! Jimmy! He’s a total babe!
DOVE
83. Up All Night 83
Shut up Toady.
TOADY
A STONE fox!
DOVE
Shut UP.
CUR
Germ...what’s goin’ on?
GERM
It was your brother and his friends
that beat me up.
CUR
What?
Cur stares at Germ, his face absorbs the news. The clock in the
distance strikes FOUR.
CUR (CONT’D)
What? Why? I don't understand.
GERM
I sold ‘em oregano.
TOADY
Were they makin’ spaghetti?
The three look at Toady.
GERM
I got a little job on the side,
helpin’ my cousin. First we were
doing handy work and stuff, then he
said he had some other business and
would I mind helpin’ him and I said
sure. And it was real easy. But all
THIS was an accident. See we were
sorta sellin’ pot...
Dove, Toady, and Cur stop.
GERM (CONT’D)
Well, I just kinda got stuck doin’ it.
I didn’t wanna tell him no. Well, we
ran outta weed and there was a HUGE
84. Up All Night 84
demand this weekend with the ‘Welcome
Back’ dance and stuff. I know it was
stupid, but I rolled some fake joints
with oregano for some friends, you
know, just as a joke, ‘cause we didn't
have anything to give 'em. But some-
how the fake joints musta got mixed
up with the real ones and next thing
I know I'm walkin' to the school to
meet you guys and I get jumped. I
guess they didn't think it was funny.
CUR
You're sayin' my brother did this to
you?
Germ nods.
CUR (CONT’D)
Over some pot.
TOADY
Over some oregano.
DOVE
Very good, Toady. It's nice to know
you're payin’ attention.
CUR
Man, I don't know what to say, Germ.
GERM
It's not your fault. I'm the one
that mixed 'em up.
(shaking his head)
It's so stupid. I’m not doing that
stuff anymore.
DOVE
Where’s your cousin, now?
GERM
I haven't seen him since before I got
my ass kicked. He's SUPPOSED to be
at this party.
DOVE
And you gotta warn him before he
85. Up All Night 85
gets HIS ass kicked...
Germ nods.
CUR
What an asshole…
TOADY
I had fun you guys but I think I gotta
get going. You want me to leave you
the crackers?
CUR
You're not goin' anywhere Toady.
TOADY
Well, I'm not gonna get beat up.
That's what's gonna happen if I hang
out with you guys long enough. That,
or I’ll end up dealin’ drugs or somethin.’
DOVE
Toady, it'll be allright.
GERM
Let him go, Jesus. Who cares?
TOADY
You guys can't make me stay.
DOVE
Do you ever wanna talk to us again?
TOADY
I'm not so sure, Dove. You know, I
gotta think about that.
DOVE
Whatever.
Toady throws the crackers at Dove and walks away.
DOVE (CONT’D)
Hey fuck you!
TOADY(O/S)
Fuck you too!
86. Up All Night 86
GERM
What an idiot.
DOVE
He’s an idiot. But he’s allright.
CUR
Thought for sure YOU’d be the first
to go Dove.
DOVE
Huh?
CUR
Or, are you hangin’ out to watch what
we do...you know, from a safe distance.
(to Germ)
He doesn’t do shit.
DOVE
Shut up Cur.
CUR
It’s the truth. Me and my freaking
shadow. Strollin’ down the avenue.
GERM
What the hell's this?
Toady walks back to the group.
TOADY
Hey.
DOVE/CUR
Hey.
Toady joins the guys again, walking down the street. He picks up
the box of crackers and offers them to everyone.
TOADY
That was weird, huh?
DOVE
Yeah.
TOADY
You guys were just gonna leave these?
87. Up All Night 87
CUR
Hm?
TOADY
Crackers...Man...
A beat. Toady munches on some crackers as they walk.
TOADY (CONT'D)
OH! Dove, kick that battery.
DOVE
Huh?
TOADY
Nine volt. By your foot.
Kick it. Aw! Missed it! Dude.
Germ looks long and hard at Toady. The boys walk.
GERM
Toady, you gonna die a virgin? I’m
just curious.
TOADY
I’ve got prospects.
CUR
(holding out his hands)
Yeah. Lefty and righty.
DOVE
You been laid, huh Germ?
Toady SPITS out a cracker.
GERM
Yeah.
CUR
You gonna tell us about it?
TOADY
(laughing)
Who was the lucky guy?
Germ delivers a precise blow to Toady's elbow.
88. Up All Night 88
TOADY (CONT'D)
Ow. Man. Funny. Bone.
CUR
Come on. Who was it?
GERM
We've got an agreement. We tell no
one.
CUR
Come on, Germ.
GERM
She finds out, my ass is grass.
CUR
Is it someone we know? Come on.
GERM
Why would I tell you dorks?
CUR
We promise not to say anything.
TOADY
Swear to God. If we do, you can
kick our butts.
GERM
Thanks Toady. I been waitin’ all
this time for your permission.
Germ SIGHS.
GERM (CONT’D)
Allright. But anyone says ANYTHING,
I'll know it was you guys and I'll
beat the hell outta ya. Don't EVEN
think I won't.
The three nod. They stop walking and stand under a streetlight.
Close on Dove.
GERM (CONT'D)
It was...you guys better not say
a word. It was that Misty chick.
89. Up All Night 89
We did it at the fort last week.
TOADY
Wow!
CUR
No way!
TOADY
Really?
GERM
Yeah.
TOADY
Where exactly?
GERM
Huh? On the top floor.
TOADY
Yeah. On the top floor. Wow. What
was she wearin'?
GERM
Nothin' dude.
TOADY
You know, before it all started.
GERM
A dress or somethin.’ We were doin'
it o.k. What's with the questions?
CUR
Stop bein' a perv Toady.
TOADY
I was just wonderin.'
The boys turn and continue down the street. No one seems to notice
a couple of tears racing down Dove's face. He fights to keep his
composure after the open-heart surgery.
CUR
Wow. Misty. That's awesome.
TOADY
90. Up All Night 90
Yeah. She's REAL pretty. Wow.
What was it like?
Toady is ignored. They walk. Dove tries to take a deep breath.
CUR
So what’s goin’ on with you guys?
GERM
Hm?
CUR
With you an’ Misty?
GERM
Huh? Oh, nothin.’ I dunno.
CUR
Maybe she was holdin’ out for a
REAL man...
Cur slaps Germ on the back. Germ shrugs. Cur turns to Dove.
CUR (CONT’D)
Huh, Dove?
Dove turns to Cur, fire in his eyes, tears on his cheeks.
CUR (CONT’D)
Holdin’ out for somebody with some
BALLS maybe?
TOADY
(cracking up)
She TOTALLY saw your BALLS!
CUR
(laughing at Dove)
That’s AWESOME! I LOVE that story!
DOVE
Yeah? Well at least I don’t hafta worry
‘bout my DAD kickin’ my ASS when I get home!
CUR
WHAT’D you say?...FUCKER?!
91. Up All Night 91
Cur gives Dove a provoking shove. Dove swings his fist and
CONNECTS with Cur’s jaw. Cur flies back and falls, grabbing his
mouth, bleeding.
The impact sets off Dove’s watch, it plays “Stars and Stripes
Forever.” Dove looks at Cur, in shock.
Cur lays on the ground, hand to mouth, tears in his eyes.
Germ looks on in awe. Toady swings his arms conducting Dove’s tiny
watch orchestra.
TOADY
(belting it out)
“THREE CHEERS FOR THE RED WHITE AND
BLUE...”
Germ THWAPS Toady on the back of the head.
GERM
Shut up.
Cur tries to catch his breath. Germ, Toady, and Dove stare.
TOADY
(ignored)
You...you o.k. Cur? That sure was one
heck of a wallop, huh? Wow...didn’t
know you had it in ya...Dove.
GERM
You allright?
Cur checks his mouth for blood, looking curiously at Germ and
avoiding eye contact with Dove.
TOADY
Boy that looked like it hurt.
The four walk down the street. Dove flips his retainer, Cur SPITS.
CEMETERY PATH. Germ leads the boys.
TOADY (CONT’D)
Germ, where you takin’ us?
GERM
You’ll see.
92. Up All Night 92
DOVE
The cemetery?
TOADY
We’re goin’ around, right?
GERM
Shortest distance between two points
is a straight line. Watch your step.
As the boys approach an iron gate, they step over headstones.
TOADY
This is creepin’ me out guys.
THE CEMETERY. The boys gaze through the gate.
BOYS’ POV. The dewy earth rolls for nearly two square miles under
magnificent trees and their shadows.
TOADY (CONT’D)
Man think of all the dead bodies in there.
GERM
Cool huh?
CUR
You’re kiddin’ me. You wanna go
through there?
GERM
No, I’m GONNA go through there.
TOADY
That's trespassing. That's illegal.
GERM
What...you a Safety?
TOADY
Not...any more. But I wouldn't even
cut through during the day. Besides
I hear teenagers hang out in there
and smoke pot.
GERM
You're a teenager, Turd.
93. Up All Night 93
TOADY
Yeah. Guess so, huh. Well I'm still
not goin' in.
GERM
Cur, talk some sense into the man,
will ya?
CUR
Dude. You don't know what kinda spooks
are hangin' out in there.
GERM
You gotta be kidding me.
CUR
No tellin’ how many people got buried
in there. I don’t mess with that stuff.
GERM
So you’re not gonna cut through...
Cur shakes his head ‘no.’ Germ points into the distance.
GERM (CONT’D)
You can see the clock tower from here.
You walk around it’ll take half an hour.
They stare at Germ a beat. He hops over the chest-high brick wall.
GERM (CONT’D)
Fine. Walk around.
DOVE
I’ll go with you.
TOADY
(in a panic)
Dove. You SURE?!
Dove looks at Toady, then Cur.
DOVE
Yeah.
OVER THE WALL. Cur and Toady look at Germ and Dove. They stare a
beat, just inches from one another.
94. Up All Night 94
GERM
You two comin'?
Cur picks at some loose rubber on the toe stop of his shoe. Toady
chews his lip. Germ SIGHS.
DOVE
It’s...o.k...Cur.
Cur looks at Dove. A beat. It’s definitely not o.k.
Cur looks at Toady. Toady chews around the outside of a cracker.
Germ and Dove turn and walk off. They stop, hearing Cur’s voice.
CUR
See?...See you guys over there...?
Dove turns and looks. There’s nothing to say. Dove and Cur stare.
Germ walks on. Dove turns and joins him. They walk away through
the cemetery.
AT THE CURB. Cur and Toady watch. The clock chimes FIVE.
TOADY
(looking down)
I think my body’s asleep.
Tires SQUEAL as the BARRACUDA pulls up behind Cur and Toady.
HEADLIGHTS splash on the iron gate.
THE CEMETERY. Dove and Germ turn and watch from the shadows.
AT THE CURB. Jim looks out the open driver’s side window.
THE CEMETERY. Dove watches, turning to Germ...but Germ’s already
gone, sprinting into the shadows, to the far wall.
AT THE CURB. Cur squats, trying to identify the figure in the
passenger seat. The figure pops up and looks at Cur over the car.
It’s Cur’s Dad, shirtless and sweaty. He holds the car door open
and the passenger seat forward.
CUR’S DAD
GET IN THE CAR.
95. Up All Night 95
Cur swallows hard. Toady nods goodbye to Cur and turns away.
CUR’S DAD (CONT’D)
You too buddy.
Toady closes his eyes and moves toward the car.
THE CEMETERY. Dove watches from the shadows of a tree.
AT THE CAR. Cur squints, SMACK on the back of the head. Toady
too, SMACK on the back of the head. They plop down in the back
seat. Cur’s Dad SLAMS the door. Cur glances at Toady. Toady rubs
his head and tries to catch his breath. Cur nudges Toady.
CUR
It’ll be allright, Toad.
Toady looks up at Cur, with watery eyes. Cur peers out the window,
catching Dove’s eye.
THE CEMETERY. Dove looks on from the shadows.
IN THE CAR. Cur raises his hand, giving Dove the finger, sideways.
Slowly he turns his hand upright, and he smiles.
THE CEMETERY. Dove watches and slowly smiles.
THE CAR. Cur shakes his head, smiling. Cur’s Dad turns and SLAPS
Cur.
AT THE GATE. The car backs up and turns, to redirect it’s lights
into the cemetery.
THE CEMETERY. Dove ducks behind a tree as headlights bounce across
the grounds. The Barracuda turns.
THE CEMETERY. The light from the car turns and is gone. Dove
moves in the direction taken by Germ. He hops a knee-high brick
wall to the side of the cemetery.
A FIELD OUTSIDE THE CEMETERY. Slowly the sky begins to lighten, as
Dove sits in a field. He leans back and stares at the sky.
THE SKY. A handful of clouds welcome the rising sun.
THE FIELD. Dove lays back and watches the sky. He closes his
eyes.
