The document discusses the use of free and open source software (FOSS) for collaborative humanities research. It describes how FOSS allows researchers to digitize collections, perform data analysis on large datasets, and enable public access and collaboration. However, it also notes challenges like the differences between technical and humanities cultures, questions around the role of digital humanities professionals, and how to evaluate such projects.
Learning through falling: Second Life in UK academia.Silversprite
This document discusses the use of virtual worlds for teaching and learning in UK academia. It addresses common questions and concerns about using virtual worlds, provides examples of how universities are using them, and offers tips for securing funding. Some of the benefits highlighted include increased access to lifelong learning, lower costs compared to physical infrastructure, and the ability to be anywhere and attend anything. The document argues that virtual worlds are a useful educational tool when used for the right purposes.
The OERu from the inside out and the outside inwitthaus
Presentation given at SAIDE (South African Institution of Distance Education) in Johannesburg, 15 June 2012. The audience included friends of mine from the University of the Witwatersrand and consultants in the fields of adult basic education and training, and so I included an overview of the whole field of OERs before sharing what I had learnt about the OER university through my TOUCANS research.
Presentation overview:

Part 2: The OERu from the inside out (views of people working within OERu network institutions)
Part 3: The OERu from the outside in (UK HEI views on the OERu concept)

MOOCs and Distance Learning - What's all the fuss about?Chris Hall
The document summarizes a seminar discussing MOOCs and distance learning. It begins with a brief history of MOOCs starting in 2007 and the initial hype around them. It then describes a real-life MOOC experience and discusses criticisms of MOOCs, noting they may lack involvement from educational researchers. The seminar considers what MOOCs can and cannot do and whether they are a fad or opportunity for the university.
This document discusses digitizing historical records to enable quantitative analysis of populations. It focuses on a project analyzing records of convicts transported from Britain to Australia, including names, ship details, sentences, offenses and descriptions. The project aims to encode records in XML, build a searchable database, trace descendants, and explore lives of disadvantaged Australians through history.
This document contains before and after photos from various doctors demonstrating fat loss after laser lipolysis treatments. The photos show measurements of fat thickness before treatments, which are then reduced by around 5mm after a single laser lipolysis session based on follow-up measurements. This indicates that laser lipolysis can effectively reduce fat thickness in one treatment.

SAMU social International is an organization founded in France in 1993 that provides emergency medical assistance and care to homeless populations. It expanded internationally in 1998. SAMU social in Dakar, Senegal focuses on providing care and transportation to shelters for homeless boys, who are a particular problem in Dakar. The shelter provides medical care, education, and aims to place boys in permanent homes when ready. Volunteers from the International School of Dakar visit the shelter to form bonds with the boys and plan activities like games, music, and art to help them feel accepted outside their normal culture. Consistency from volunteers is essential for maintaining relationships with the boys.
WWF is working with two villages in Senegal, Ouakam and Yoff, on various environmental projects. In Ouakam, they plan to install a pulley system for the village well, conduct regular beach cleanups, install a trash screen in the drainage system, and replace wooden fish cleaning tables with plastic ones. In Yoff, WWF will help the women's group meet goals outlined in a recent village improvement report, as they have already begun various community projects. ISD students will help with these efforts while learning about Senegalese culture and the important fishing industry.
In this presentation I will describe two projects that aim to collect and publish historical sources on the web and to work with local and family historians to maintain these as dynamic historical resources.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can

This document provides an overview of wound healing, its functions, stages, mechanisms, factors affecting it, and complications.
A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function.
Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.
