2. As a graduation present my grandparents are going to give
me $5000 to spend on a trip to a destination of my choice…
Their only stipulations are that
- I must spend ALL of the money on this trip
- I must travel by air, rail and car at some point during the
trip.
- I must not stay with relatives or friends on your journey (my
grandparents want me to live a little, experience something
different, and go out of my comfort zone)
This is my proposal…
Day 1: I will begin my trip by driving my car to the ferry out of
the island. Over to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal in
Vancouver. I will leave my car with a trusted family member.
While on the ferry I plan on getting something to eat. From
the ferry terminal in Tsawwassen I will take a bus to
"Bridgeport Station“ in Richmond and from the station I willl
take the Skytrain over to Vancouver International Airport
(YVR)

3. • From Vancouver International Airport I will take a
flight to Stockholm, Sweden. This flight on average
will take about 9 hours and 32 minutes, and the cost
will be about $1220 for a return trip.
Day 3: Stockholm
• In Stockholm I will backpack around one of Europe's
largest and best-preserved medieval city centers,
visit the city’s waterways and parks and see
everything that the Swedish capital has to offer, with
its stunning and extremely varied scenery in every
direction, its 13th-century cathedral, the royal
palace of Kungliga Slottet and see its underground
armory of cafes and restaurants.
• I may also take a ferry or a sightseeing boat and
travel between the many mystic islands of the
Swedish Archipelago.

4. Day 5:Karlstad
After 2 nights sightseeing Stockholm and seeing everything that the city
has to offer. I would take a 3 hour train trip back up to Karlstad. Here I
would see Sweden's longest stone bridge, East Bridge, which was built in
the 18th century. Karlstad is Sweden's sunniest city and therefor its city
symbol is a happy sun.
The varied nature of Karlstad with its beautiful scenery of the river
Klaralven, its deep forests and the Vaner archipelago offer breathtaking
views. The Varmlands Museum houses an exhibition of the history of
Varmland. Another impressive landmark is the city's cathedral.
I would further experience the town by taking a long walk along the river
Klaralven and meeting people along the way.

5. Day: 6 Gothemburg
• After visiting for a day in Karlstad I will take the
train to visit Gothemburg. Gothenburg is the
country's second-largest city with everything a
modern city can offer.
• In Gothenburg I would backpack and hike through
the Gothenburg Botanical Garden which has been
named the third most beautiful in the World.
• Next I would go visit Gothenburg's largest park,
Slottsskogen, where the Natural History Museum
is located. The park is also home to one of the
worlds oldest observatories.
• I would also go and see Gothenburg's most
popular tourist attractions, the archipelago
(Southern Gothenburg Archipelago), this can be
reached by boat.
• I would find out that Alvsborg Fortress, Vinga and
Styrso islands are also popular places to visit. And
I think I would visit the amusement park Liseberg,
the largest of its kind in Scandinavia.

6. Day 9: Copenhagen
After enjoying a little over a week in Sweden,
I would make plans to go and visit the other
Scandinavian countries such as Denmark. To
reach Copenhagen, I’ll take a bus and motor
along across the awe-inspiring five-mile
Öresund bridge and tunnel connecting
Sweden and Denmark. I’ll get to know
Copenhagen by strolling around the lively
Strøget pedestrian center, followed by going
to the Nyhavn pier and having a cozy dinner
together with the locals at one of Denmark's
oldest restaurants.
The next morning my day is free to enjoy
Europe's best people-watching on the
Strøget, touring the Renaissance Rosenborg
Castle, visiting the fanciful Tivoli Gardens or
experiencing the counterculture of
Christiania.

7. Day 12: Viking Ships and Ærø Island Charms
After touring Copenhagen I'll drive to Roskilde to
prowl through the evocative Viking Ship
Museum, where I'll learn about the rough-and-
tumble, yet surprisingly sophisticated, Viking
culture of a thousand years ago. I'll also tour
Denmark's venerable Roskilde Cathedral, the
resting place of 38 kings and queens of
Denmark, and the first Gothic church ever built
of brick.
Then a scenic ferry ride will take me to the
nostalgic little island of Ærø and the old rural
port of Ærøskøbing. In the evening I’ll enjoy a
traditional Danish feast together with locals or
companions I meet on the way. I’ll camp in one
of the tiny beach huts on Ærø island and enjoy
the sunsets of the Scandinavian summers.

8. Day 14: Overnight Ferry to Oslo
After a morning free to relax and savor this
epitome of small-town Denmark, or get Ærø-
dynamic and pedal a rented bike past
thatched cottages, tidy farms, and windswept
bluffs, I’ll stop at one of the restaurants, enjoy
a tasty smørrebrød lunch together and return
to Ærøskøbing to learn about island life from a
local resident over tea.
Then I’ll go back to my beach cottage to pack
my stuff, catch a bus to the small island ferry
terminal back to Copenhagen. Once in
Copenhagen I’ll have a latenight dinner, and I’ll
hop aboard an overnight ferry for Oslo,
Norway.

9. Day 15: Historic and Artistic Oslo
I'll greet the sun as we glide up the
Oslofjord — one of the most scenic parts
in Scandinavia — and into Norway's
capital. Once ashore, I'll take a walking
tour around the harbor and through the
heart of Oslo, learning about Norway's
history and politics along the way.
With my Oslo Pass, that I bought at a
tourist center, I'll have plenty of free time
to visit the Norwegian Resistance
Museum, or my choice of the city's other
fine museums. Before the night's dinner.
I'll take a visit to Frogner Park, home to
Gustav Vigeland's whimsical, lifelike
sculptures.

10. Day 16: Norway's Seafaring Past
Today I’ll cruise across the harbor to Bygdøy peninsula for a treasure
trove of nautical history. I'll visit the Viking Ship Museum to learn about
Scandinavia's best collection of Viking vessels and artifacts. Nearby, I'll
also have time to see the impressive Maritime Museum — as well as
special museums devoted to the innovative Fram polar explorer and the
ocean-crossing rafts of adventurer Thor Heyerdahl (Kon-Tiki and Ra II).
Inspired by Norway's seafaring history, I’ll be free to sail back to Oslo's
harbor. From there, armed with my Oslo Pass (giving me free admission
to most museums and public transportation), I'll have the rest of the
afternoon and evening free in this vibrant city.

Day 18: Maihaugen and Giant's Country
Taking a bus northwest from Oslo, I'll learn about daily Norwegian
life and traditions. I'll tour the beautifully situated Maihaugen
Open-Air Folk Museum, including its array of sod-roofed houses
and remarkable 12th-century stave church, constructed entirely
from wood.
After a scenic afternoon drive through farmland and forests, I'll
settle into a, creaky mountain hotel, located in the heart of
Giant's Country. Where I’ll share a traditional dinner together,
with the locals and sleep in Elvesæter.

12. Day 19: Fjord Country and Bergen
Making sure that my camera is ready: because today is scenery day! As my
bus will climb the highest road in northern Europe (4,600 ft.) to the
windswept Jotunheimen for a panorama of glittering snow and 8,100-foot
peaks. I'll then take a dramatic corkscrew-drive down to sea level and hop
aboard a ferry for a 2½-hour scenic Sognefjord cruise between cliffs and
waterfalls (replicating the fjord cruise portion of the "Norway in a
Nutshell" route). I'll enjoy lunch on the ferry then I am back aboard our
bus for one more scenic stretch of highway before I am free for dinner and
am able to enjoy the rest of the evening in ruddy-cheeked Bergen, where
I'll stay and sleep for (2 nights)

13. Day 20: Morning and Afternoon in Charming Bergen
After spending a night in Bergen, a local guide will walk me through the
salty history of this seafaring town, starting at the Bryggens Museum and
through the enchanting old Hanseatic wharf area, where wooden
warehouses lean together and recall their glory days as a center of North
Atlantic trade. My afternoon is then free to explore more of Bergen, ride a
funicular to the top of Mt. Fløyen for a thrilling view, or buy one of those
hand-knit wool sweaters that caught my eye back at the wharf. This
evening I'll gather for a hearty Norwegian feast to share travel memories
and toast new friends. Then I’ll make preparations for the trip back home.

14. Day 21: Flight from Bergen to Stockholm and
Home
After such a long trip in Scandinavia I’ll eat
breakfast and book my flight from Bergen back
to Stockholm. From Stockholm airport I make a
connection flight that takes me back to
Vancouver International Airport.
From the airport I take the Skytrain to
"Bridgeport Station” and from there I take a
bus to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal and take
a ferry back to the island. At the ferry terminal I
grab a quick bite to eat and hop on the next
ferry home. After arriving at the departure bay
terminal in Nanaimo I am picked up and driven
home.
Where I collapse onto my bed, jetlagged and
exhausted from such an amazing trip in
Scandinavia.
