Faroe Islands
North Atlantic Cruise
In the deep North Atlantic lie 18 beautiful islands just wait-
ing to be discovered. The Faroe Islands are synonymous
with unspoilt beauty and untouched nature, new Nordic
cuisine, preserved architecture, the world’s cleanest air
and freshest drinking water. An exciting and unique com-
bination of nature and culture in the best way.
On our unique cruise across the North Atlantic you will
have a 7 day trip to explore Iceland, the Faroe Islands and
the North Atlantic. You arrive by sea the way the Vikings
did. Watching the cliffs rise out of the rolling waves. The
only difference is that on board Norröna you have all the
things they did not have: good food, comfortable beds, en-
tertainment and time to enjoy a leisurely crossing.
Iceland is a country with extreme geological contrasts.
Widely known as the “land of fire and ice” and home to
some of the largest glaciers in Europe and some of the
world’s most active volcanoes. Iceland is also the country
of light and darkness. Long summer days with almost 24
hours of sunshine as opposed to short winter days with
only few hours of daylight.

GOOD REASONS TO TRAVEL TO ICELAND
Not many places on Earth boast landscapes as grandiose and diverse as Iceland, where the
tectonic plates holding up North America and Europe collide and nature lets loose in all its
splendour. Here you will experience glaciers, exploding hot geysers, thermal baths, bubbling
sulphur pits, roaring waterfalls, smoking volcanoes, lava moonscapes, floating icebergs, calv-
ing glaciers and picturesque little villages.
Go for a sail on Jökulsarlon ice lagoon, an arctic landscape in a class of its own - one of Ice-
land’s greatest wonders. Visit the moonlike landscapes of Mývatn, where NASA used to train its
astronauts. The area is dotted with lava columns, they crop up everywhere.
Experience Iceland’s incredible waterfalls, including the most powerful one in Europe, Dettifoss.
See how Skógafoss creates stunning rainbows, try to penetrate the curtain of Sejlandsfoss wa-
terfall, and experience the best known of them all Gullfoss.
Iceland is famous for its 170 hot springs, which well up because the Earth’s crust over its
molten core is thinner here than in Europe or North America. This means you will enjoy a host
of opportunities for outdoor bathing in water that is a pleasant 38 degrees Celsius. Perhaps you
might want to hike along the crater edge of the volcano Krafla or in the north-western highlands,
where you can observe age-old sheep farming traditions when the sheep are sheared.
If it is a challenge you are looking for, why not hike Europe’s biggest glacier Vatnajökull. Or go
on guided tours and have a go at river rafting, driving a snow scooter or hiking a glacier. There
are also the options of whale safari or riding Iceland’s famous ponies. Iceland also has new Nor-
dic cuisine to offer and the locals know how to use the resources yielded by the pristine ocean
and volcanic soil. Fresh fish and tender Icelandic lamb are staples. If you feel like something
a little different, why not pair your braised leg of lamb dinner with Iceland’s signature spirit
‘Black Death,’ followed by a dessert of local yoghurt skyr with Icelandic blueberries. You can,
of course, also quench your thirst with the world’s cleanest water from one of Iceland’s springs.
The adventure trips we offer are based on driving around Iceland, 1400 to 3900 kilometres.
The multitude of nature experience en route is varied and grandiose. Our range of self-drive
programmes/route descriptions is broad, and we are convinced that it will inspire you to tailor
precisely the trip that will bring your dreams of wondrous adventures to life. Take a closer look
at our self-drive programmes and the choice of accommodation and routes.
When you choose a self-drive holiday, your vacation and experiences start as soon as you park
the car on board. As MS Norröna crosses the North Atlantic, it follows the Viking’s original
sailing route close past the Shetland Islands onwards to the Faroe Islands and finally to Iceland,
which makes this North Atlantic crossing an excellent opportunity to also experience the Faroes
for 2-3 days on your way to Iceland or back again.

1 OR 2 WEEKS IN ICELAND
Driving through the Icelandic highlands is an adventure
on nature’s own terms: wild, indomitable and unpredicta-
ble. Narrow gravel roads, no bridges, limited modern com-
forts. You will never find yourself lined up behind other
cars, but you will have to ford the rivers or turn back.
In winter the highlands are beyond reach, and only
accessible by 4WD during the summer. So, if you have a
4WD that you only use for city driving, maybe it is time to
put it through its paces in its right element.
Drive off into the unknown and enjoy the surprises. Cook
on a primus under the open skies. Release your inner
explorer. We will provide the directions and good advice –
and you your sound common sense.

GOOD REASONS TO TRAVEL TO THE FAROE ISLANDS
In the deep North Atlantic lie 18 beautiful islands just waiting to be discovered.
The Faroes are synonymous with unspoilt beauty and untouched nature, new
Nordic cuisine, preserved architecture, the world’s cleanest air and freshest
water. An exciting and unique combination of nature and culture at their best.
This is why Lonely Planet chose the Faroe Islands as one of the planet’s top
travel destinations and National Geographic Traveller named the Faroe Islands
the world’s most unspoilt islands. This is where you can immerse yourself in
scenery most people recognise from The Lord of the Rings films. Nowhere in
the Faroe Islands will you be further than 5 km from the ocean and from every-
where you can enjoy breathtaking views of its more than 340 mountaintops.
The large swathes of untouched landscapes are also easy to access.
Of the 18 islands, 17 are accessible and 6 are interconnected by bridges or
tunnels. This is part of what makes the Faroe Islands so special; while you
are surrounded by incredible untamed landscapes in the middle of the North
Atlantic, every modern comfort is available to you.
You simply have to experience the green cliff islands, that the Vikings fell in
love with over 1000 years ago when they settled down and started building
the society of hospitable people, who are so eager to welcome today’s visitors.
In this catalogue and on our website you will find our selection of self-drive
holiday packages. You can choose between spending your nights at a hotel in
Tórshavn, out in the countryside at a guesthouse or more privately in a holiday
home. Or maybe you choose to go on an island hopping, perhaps the best way
to experience the Faroes Islands.

TÓRSHAVN
With only 20,000 inhabitants, Tórshavn is not just one
of the world’s smallest capitals, but also one of the most
charming ones. This dynamic city, with its creative, inno-
vative and highly educated population, is the political and
cultural hub of the Faroes, and, fond as they are of their
traditions and cultural legacy, local residents are also
keen to embrace emerging global trends. All this means
that Tórshavn offers a fascinating mix of Faroese cultural
history and all the amenities you would expect to find in a
modern 21st
century capital. The city is a melting pot of old
and new. To take in its contrasts, explore Tórshavn start-
ing from its oldest area down by the harbour, Tinganes,
where little grass-thatched houses stretch along narrow
meandering alleys then stroll up towards the mountain-
sides, you will find that the residential neighbourhoods
grow younger and trendier as you ascend.
KIRKJUBØUR
The village Kirkjubøur is the place in the Faroes where
you will find the most remarkable relics of the past. Dur-
ing the Middle Ages the village was the cultural and reli-
gious centre of the Faroes and part of the Catholic Church
of Norway. The seminary in Kirkjubøur was the first and
only one in the Faroes up until the reformation in 1538.
King Sverri of Norway grew up here, where he also at-
tended the seminary and was ordained. Today there are
around 80 inhabitants in Kirkjubøur, which is a 15-minute
drive from Tórshavn.
VESTMANNA
Vestmanna is the starting point for excursions to the
awe-inspiring bird cliffs and grottos known as Vestman-
nabjörgini. In the high season there are several daily de-
partures for the bird cliffs, which is a popular excursion,
both among international and local visitors. The boats
sail along the mountainside and up to the cliffs them-
selves, which face the Atlantic sea head on, before head-
ing through narrow straits and into deep grottos formed
by the crashing waves over millions of years, to bring you
close to the 600-metre-high vertical wall of rock where
thousands of seabirds breed. In these majestic surround-
ings you can feel one with nature, and you will understand
why a deeply rooted respect for the forces of nature perme-
ates Faroese culture.

GJÓGV
The most photographed village in the Faroes is probably
Gjógv, which is located in the northernmost part of Eystu-
roy. In order to reach Gjógv you will have to cross a high
mountain ridge from where you will see a large green val-
ley with striking mountains on both sides. At the very bot-
tom of the valley, the colourful houses are dotted around
a beautiful crystal-clear river with a little dam where chil-
dren play all summer. But the village is best known for its
natural harbour. Gjógv means gorge in Faroese and it is
precisely in the great gorge cutting into the landscape that
the natural harbour is located. Take all the steps down
into the gorge, down to the harbour and take in the im-
mense power of nature in surroundsound.
THE NORTHERN ISLANDS
Klaksvík is the central hub of the Northern Isles: Kalsoy,
Kunoy, Borðoy, Viðoy, Svínoy and Fugloy. The Northern
Isles are characterised by towering mountains on the
eastern side the islands taper down towards a jagged
coastline, which cuts the slopes off into low cliffs, while
the northern side is characterised by rugged majestic
cliff promontories. The two smallest islands, Svínoy and
Fugloy, can only be reached by boat or helicopter, while
bridges, dams and tunnels interlink Kunoy, Borðoy and
Viðoy, but you will need to catch the ferry to get to Kalsoy.
SANDOY
Sandoy is the fifth largest island in the Faroes and, along
with Suðuroy, makes up the large southern island pair in
the archipelago. Sandoy is considered the flattest island,
with broad valleys and many little lakes, low rounded
mountains and sandy beaches. The gently rolling moun-
tains make it appear greener than the other islands with
their more rugged craggy mountains.
MYKINES
Mykines island is the westernmost outpost of the Faroes.
This island is known for its teeming birdlife as it attracts
hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, which nest
here in summer. Mykines is also home to the only gannet
colony in the Faroes, which in itself makes it quite the at-
traction, but the charming little puffins with their colour-
ful beaks are probably the island’s main lure, possibly be-
cause they are usually happy to pose with their beaks full
of fish. Sailing to Mykines takes just under one hour and
is one of the best ways to see Tindhólmur up close.

CITY COMFORT
Tórshavn is a cosy town that mainly consists of small
houses in every colour. It has all that it takes to be a tiny
little capital - there is something truly special about
Tórshavn. The town is a charming blend of old and new.
In the area around the harbour lies Tinganes, where the
government is located. The ‘old town’ of Tórshavn is also
here. The cute and small houses have been restored over
the last years and the area has turned in to a cosy place
where people want to live. Skansin is located over the har-
bour. This is an old fortress built in 1580. It was built in
order to defend Tórshavn from pirates.

Friday evening, when the North Atlantic Cruise is nearing its end,
we celebrate our adventures with a buffet offering original dishes
from the Viking Age (800 - 1150). The Vikings were more than
fearsome warriors, they were also culinary explorers, who dis-
covered and disseminated new raw materials, food preparation
techniques and storage methods. After an exhaustive search for
authentic recipes and ingredients, such as fish, meat, poultry and
spices from the Viking times, we have put an enticing buffet to-
gether with a plethora of original dishes from the Viking Age.

TUESDAY – ICELAND
UNIQUE DAY TRIP TO LAKE MÝVATN
Duration approx. 10 hours
On this day trip we drive from Seyðisfjörður up to the
beautiful 620 m high mountain pass, Fjarðarheiði, and
further down to the town of Egilsstaðir. The trip contin-
ues through the breathtaking valley, Jökuldalurin, and we
will make a short photo stop at the dark desert landscape,
Dimmufjallgarður. During the trip we pass Horseborg,
where several movie scenes for major Hollywood produc-
tions have been filmed. We will make a stop at Námafjall,
where we will see roaring pseudocrats and steamy sul-
phates. We are going to see the bubbly mud puddles and
walk on the geothermal mud. We will make a stop at the
Jarðböðin Nature Bath, where we will have a light lunch.
A must on this trip is to bathe in the hot water from ge-
othermal sources (entrence fee not included). Afterwards
we will visit Dimmuborgir, which is an interesting lava
landscape. On our return trip we drive to Dettifoss, which
is a waterfall in northern Iceland. The waterfall is 44 me-
ters high and 100 m wide and has an average water flow
rate of 193 cubic meters per second, making Dettifoss Eu-
rope’s most powerful waterfall. This is without a doubt the
highlight of the trip.
MONDAY – THE FAROE ISLANDS
BUS TOUR TO HISTORICAL KIRKJUBØ
Duration approx. 4 hours
Kirkjubø is the historical heart of the Faroes. The little
village is located on the south west coast of Streymoy and
offers a stunning view of the islands Hestur and Koltur. In
the Middle Ages it was the Faroese Episcopal See, which
made it the country’s spiritual and cultural hub.
On this excursion we will drive through Tórshavn, quite
possibly the world’s smallest capital, and then up across
beautiful mountains, past the village Velbastað clinging
to the steep slopes. The bus trip will be both scenic and
informative, as it is guided in English, Danish and Ger-
man. The local farmer will be ready to greet us in Kirkjubø
and guide us on a visit to the enigmatic Magnus Cathe-
dral, built around the year 1300 by Bishop Erlendur, and
then to St. Olaf’s Church and the Kirkjubøargarður estate
farmhouse (Roykstovan), a stave house dating back to the
turn of the first millennium, it is said to be the world’s
oldest inhabited wooden house. To round off the visit, our
host will invite us for hot drinks and pastries in the at-
mospheric Roykstovan. Included in this bus tour is also a
guided walk in the old part of Tórshavn.

WEDNESDAY – ICELAND
BUS TRIP TO REYÐARFJÖRÐUR
AND LAKE LÖGURINN
Duration approx. 7 hours
Reyðarfjörður is the largest inlet on the east coast of Ice-
land. From the beginning of 20th
century Reyðarfjörður
was a trading- and fishing port. Due to the good port con-
ditions and the strategic location, Reyðarfjörður became
the second largest of the Allied bases in Iceland during
World War II. In Reyðarfjörður you have the opportunity
to visit the war museum, located at the old camp area (en-
trence fee not included). Next we continue to Egilsstaðir
and further along the southeastern bank of Lake Lögurinn,
where we pass the beautiful Hallormsstaðarskógur, which
is the largest forest in Iceland. Our next stop is Skriðuk-
laustur – Cultural Centre East Iceland – a near millenni-
um-old manor, turned cloister and finally cultural institute,
Gunnarstofnun, dedicated to Gunnar Gunnarsson, one of
Iceland’s most renowned 20th
century authors. During our
stay there, a lunch buffet will be served in the charming
manor café, Klausturkaffi. Right next to the cultural in-
stitute lies Snæfellsstofa, the Visitors’ Centre built for
the Vatnajökull National Park, which is Europe’s largest.
Finally, on our way back, we will have about an hour stop
over for relaxing or strolling in Egilsstaðir before we head
to Seyðisfjörður.
THURSDAY – THE FAROE ISLANDS
BUSTRIP TO ROMANTIC GJÓGV
Duration approx. 4 hours
The village Gjógv is nestled on the outermost north-east-
ern tip of Eysturoy, the second largest island in the Faroes.
On our way East we will cross the bridge connecting the
islands Streymoy and Eysturoy, pass the imposing sum-
mits of Slættaratind (882 m) and Gráfelli (857 m), the tall-
est mountains in the archipelago, located between the vil-
lages of Eiði and Gjógv.
Gjógv is best known for its picturesque scenery dotted
with multicoloured old houses built around its vital natural
harbour, which lies protected in the gorge that has given
the village its name, gjógv means gorge in Faroese. It is
a fitting name; the harbour carved by the sea was the vil-
lage’s lifeline before the arrival of modern roads.
This is a very small village – with only 30 inhabitants now-
adays, but it attracts many visitors, both foreigners and
locals, who are enchanted by its romantic tranquillity.
Gjógv is the perfect spot for a leisurly stroll, and we will ex-
plore the little village before heading to its charming guest-
house Gjáargarður for hot drinks and homemade pastries.

»We want the sailing on the MS Norröna to be a great and memorable experience.
Therefore our staff will do their utmost to ensure that you have a pleasant journey«,
says our on board Sales & Service Manager. We ask him how to spend a perfect day
on board the Norröna: »I think you should start the day with our famous breakfast
buffet. Then I’d head to the Naust and order a good cup of coffee. Don’t forget to
take a walk on the sundeck to enjoy the view and soak up the fresh sea breeze.
I would also recommend that you try our hot tubs on Deck 7. Afterwards you might
want a quick dip in our little pool and a visit to our sauna. Catch an afternoon movie
at the cinema, and in the evening we offer culinary adventures, whether you choose
our extensive Norröna Buffet or the Simmer Dim Gourmet. For a perfect end to the
day, you could stop by our Naust Bar and offer your sweetheart a delicious cocktail,
while listening to live music from the famous Faroese musicians playing on board.«

CANCELLATION AGREEMENT
It is possible to take out cancellation agreement with SML, which is 5% of the cost of the
travel. If the travel cost is to be refunded to the traveller the insurance amount will be de-
ducted from the total cost. The cancellation agreement will cover if the client has to cancel
the trip due to death or severe acute illness which requires hospitalization or prescribed
sickbed, or due to something equivalent (eg. Burglary), of the client himself, spouse, part-
ner, parents or in-laws, children or grandchildren, siblings, grandparents, sister or brother
in law or travel companion, provided that a medical document or in case of burglary a copy
of the review to the police in the form of a written receipt with the reference number is sent
to SML within 7 days after the cancellation. It is a condition of coverage that the insured as
soon as possible is examined by a doctor - either by own GP or doctor on call. The client
shall make the cancellation immediately or as soon as possible after the circumstances
have arisen, and the client bears the expenses related to the issuance of documents.
CHANGES/CANCELLATION BY SML BEFORE DEPARTURE
Passengers are entitled to updates on arrivals and departures. Information about departure/
arrival is available on phone +298345800 or on www.smyrilline.com. If the package tour is
cancelled by SML before departure or cannot be completed as agreed, the customer must
be notified as soon as possible. However, this does not apply to minor changes/trivialities.
At the same time as changes/cancellations are announced, SML must inform the customer
about the possibility to complain. The customer may terminate the agreement and have any
amount refunded that has been paid according to the agreement, or take part in another
package tour of his/her own choice, if SML can offer this without disproportionate costs
or losses. Within adequate time after receipt of the notify caution of change, the customer
must notify SML. If the customer chooses to participate in a package tour of a higher value
than the one originally booked, the customer must pay the price difference. If the package
tour has a lower value than the one originally booked, SML must refund the price differ-
ence. Responsibility and exemption from responsibility for SML in case of changes etc.: If
the customer suffers a loss due to SML’s changes or as a consequence of cancellation of
the package tour, the customer has a claim for a refund in correspondence with general
refund regulations, unless the cancellation/deficiency is caused by the fact that the number
of travellers mentioned in the agreement has not been registered – that a certain percent-
age of travellers has been not achieved and that SML has notified the customer of this no
later than 14 days before departure (for shorter excursions/bus journeys a shorter time of
notice may apply) or that the loss is caused by a third party or external circumstances of
no relevance to the package tour, and that SML or anyone, for whom SML is responsible,
could not have foreseen these circumstances by applying adequate care when entering
the agreement or could have avoided or averted them i.e. force majeure or circumstances
similar to force majeure. SML does not enter into the statutory, objectively based responsi-
bility that may lie with carriers, hotels and other collaborators. SML does not assume any
responsibility for irrelevant third party damages on persons or for lost, stolen or destroyed
luggage/vehicles etc. For the boat journey SML’s travelling regulations apply. Reference
is made to the timetable. Complaints and limitation of liability: If the customer finds any
deficiencies during the journey or in relation to the destination, he/she must notify SML
or the service provider in question to make it possible for them to remedy the deficiency.
A deficiency occurs, if the traveller does not receive the services and performances that
through catalogues, advertisements or special agreements with SML have been stated on
the participant receipt, or the performances are of a poorer quality than what was agreed
or guaranteed. If SML shall remedy the deficiency, the customer cannot claim a proportion-
al reduction or terminate the agreement. If remedying may cause SML disproportionate
costs or considerable disadvantages, the customer may be referred to claim a proportional
price reduction or to cancel. Refund claims must be proposed to SML or the intermediary
within reasonable time after the journey has ended. At the same time SML limit their re-
sponsibility for deficiencies and damages to the same extent as the following international
conventions that may apply for the service providers, who are to blame for the deficient
part of the package tour: For air carriage: The Warsaw Convention; For sea carriage: The
Athens Convention; For train carriage: The convention for international rail road trans-
ports. Travellers’ accident insurance: As very low refunds are often paid according to the
international conventions, and as the traveller must pay any costs concerning medical care
and ambulance transportation, we recommend that travellers take out a travellers’ accident
insurance. Ask our travel consultants for details.
NORTH ATLANTIC CRUISE EXCURSIONS
SML reserves the right to change or cancel the excursions both in Iceland and on the Faroe
Islands in the event of challenging weather conditions. If an excursion is cancelled, SML
will refund the prepaid amount on board. Refund will be in DKK. SML strongly recom-
mends booking the excursions in advance, as SML cannot guarantee that there is space on
the busses when booking on board.
SMYRIL LINE EXCURSIONS (EXCURSIONS IN THE FAROE ISLANDS)
Smyril Line Excursions reserves the right to change or cancel the excursions in the event
of challenging weather conditions.
Your safety is our highest priority. We draw your attention to the risks associated with the
unique characteristics of the Faroese environment. Consequently, should you venture into
the Faroese environment, either alone, following inspiration from our website/catalogue, or
together with one of our tour guides, you do so entirely at your own risk. SML accepts no
liability for any injury or loss that may occur as a result.
As a safety precaution Smyril Line Excursions reserves the right to deny people to go on a
excursion if the guide finds the footwear / clothes etc. unsuitable for hiking.
The excursions are not suitable for children under the age of 7.
CARRIAGE BY INDEPENDENT CARRIERS
For land transport in connection with package tours via independent carriers other terms
and conditions may apply for these companies’ part of the package tour. These regulations
are supplied when the package tour is booked. Especially the rules concerning check-in
time, pets and luggage may vary from one company to another.
TRAVEL TIMES
All scheduled times are local times and subject to weather conditions. SML reserves the
right to change the timetable. Passengers are ordered to stay updated on departure times
and possible changes on our website www.smyrilline.com or call +298 345800.
WINTER SAILING TO ICELAND
SML always plans for safe crossings and, should conditions prove adverse, we may have to
change the sailing schedule accordingly.
Should weather conditions and/or technical problems prevent safe sailing between the
Faroe Islands and Iceland or between Iceland and the Faroe Islands, SML reserves the
right to change the sailing schedule, so that we depart earlier or later than planned. SML
also reserves the right to cancel a departure.
If MS Norröna departs earlier or later than planned or if a departure is cancelled, SML is
not obliged to pay any compensation, pay for any alternative means of transport or offer
any free accommodation whatsoever. Passengers are liable for these expenses. SML can,
however, offer passengers who are stranded in the Faroes free accommodation on board
MS Norröna, although reasonable payment for any meals will be required. If passengers
are stranded in Iceland, SML is not liable for any expenses they may incur owing to this,
including, but not limited to, hotel expenses. However, SML would be very happy to help
customers find accommodation, should this be required.
As an example, if a week passes without Norröna reaching Seyðisfjørður in Iceland, and a
passenger on board Norröna wishes to get to Iceland sooner, SML will not pay for a flight;
passengers are solely responsible for any such alternative travel arrangements. However,
if a passenger is travelling with a car and wishes to have it shipped to Iceland, SML will
ensure, together with the passenger, that the vehicle is shipped to Seyðisfjørður in Iceland
for free on the next trip.
Passengers are required to stay updated on departure times and possible changes on our
website smyrilline.com or call +298 345800. SML will always do their outmost to inform
passengers about any changes in the sailing schedule, therefore it is very important that
passengers provide SML with a telephone number, which is reachable at all times.
CHECK-IN
Check-in times can be found on our website.
Please inform check-in personnel when travelling with special needs so the appropriate
consideration can be shown. Please note that departure time is the time/date which is stat-
ed on the ticket. SML reserves the right to cancel journeys for persons who have not pre-
sented themselves for check-in within the check in times. SML reserves the right to sail as
soon as check-in has closed. Access to the car deck during the voyage cannot be ensured.
The customer has to be aware of the fact that waiting time should be expected in regards to
check-in, driving on board, driving ashore, and the customer should not expect to be ashore
at the arrival time in the port.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Passengers with special needs are kindly asked to meet at check-in no later than 2,5 hours
prior to departure. Please inform at check-in about your particular needs in order to grant
you the best service possible; (eg. let you park the car near the on-board elevator, help you
to and from the disability cabin, etc.). While we do our best, you may expect waiting time in
connection with departure and arrival.
NO-SHOW
Customer’s obligations – failure to appear – unused services: If the customer has not
cancelled the package tour, and/or if the traveller does not appear at the stated time and
place for departure or home journey, or if the traveller is not able to commence or finish the
journey due to missing travel documents, e.g. valid passport, necessary visa or vaccination
documents etc., SML is entitled to charge the total price of the package tour. This also
applies, if the customer is expelled due to repeated gross negligence of the regulations of
the carrier, hotel, etc. If a customer fails to appear at the stated transports or in any other
way fails to use the performances included in the package tour, he cannot claim compen-
sation for any unused performances/services. The customer must keep himself informed
of the time of the home journey in case he has booked a roundtrip on his own or for some
other reason has left his travelling group. Furthermore he must obey any regulations for
reconfirming airline distances that are included in individual journeys and package tours
without the assistance of a conductor. Failing to reconfirm means that the airlines are en-
titled to make the booked seats available to other parties. Applicable law and venue: All
claims deriving from a package tour, for which the above conditions have been approved,
are adjusted according to Danish law. Venue for disputes: The Copenhagen Maritime and
Commercial Court.

The cabins are at your disposal until 2 hours before arrival. The time when you are to leave
the cabin can vary and is announced on board.
SAFETY

In case this is denied, the traveller may be refused boarding with no right to claim compen-
sation for the fare. Luggage which might cause considerable inconvenience to or endanger
the safety of the vessel, human beings or goods must not be brought aboard. The carrier

entitled to bring the luggage ashore, to render it harmless or to destroy it, if brought aboard
without the carrier´s knowledge and written consent. The passenger must not bring on
board any luggage or article, which may be considered a safety hazard under international
ship and port security code. If the violation of the above provisions causes the vessel to
be detained, restricted in operation or involves the imposing of a fine upon the carrier, the
vessel or its owners, the passenger is to indemnify the carrier for any and all costs and ex-
penses caused thereby including, but not limited to, the loss of revenue. The traveller must

 Seljalandsfoss GOOD REASONSTO TRAVEL TO ICELAND Not many places on Earth boast landscapes as grandiose and diverse as Iceland, where the tectonic plates holding up North America and Europe collide and nature lets loose in all its splendour. Here you will experience glaciers, exploding hot geysers, thermal baths, bubbling sulphur pits, roaring waterfalls, smoking volcanoes, lava moonscapes, floating icebergs, calv- ing glaciers and picturesque little villages. Go for a sail on Jökulsarlon ice lagoon, an arctic landscape in a class of its own - one of Ice- land’s greatest wonders. Visit the moonlike landscapes of Mývatn, where NASA used to train its astronauts. The area is dotted with lava columns, they crop up everywhere. Experience Iceland’s incredible waterfalls, including the most powerful one in Europe, Dettifoss. See how Skógafoss creates stunning rainbows, try to penetrate the curtain of Sejlandsfoss wa- terfall, and experience the best known of them all Gullfoss. Iceland is famous for its 170 hot springs, which well up because the Earth’s crust over its molten core is thinner here than in Europe or North America. This means you will enjoy a host of opportunities for outdoor bathing in water that is a pleasant 38 degrees Celsius. Perhaps you might want to hike along the crater edge of the volcano Krafla or in the north-western highlands, where you can observe age-old sheep farming traditions when the sheep are sheared. If it is a challenge you are looking for, why not hike Europe’s biggest glacier Vatnajökull. Or go on guided tours and have a go at river rafting, driving a snow scooter or hiking a glacier. There are also the options of whale safari or riding Iceland’s famous ponies. Iceland also has new Nor- dic cuisine to offer and the locals know how to use the resources yielded by the pristine ocean and volcanic soil. Fresh fish and tender Icelandic lamb are staples. If you feel like something a little different, why not pair your braised leg of lamb dinner with Iceland’s signature spirit ‘Black Death,’ followed by a dessert of local yoghurt skyr with Icelandic blueberries. You can, of course, also quench your thirst with the world’s cleanest water from one of Iceland’s springs. The adventure trips we offer are based on driving around Iceland, 1400 to 3900 kilometres. The multitude of nature experience en route is varied and grandiose. Our range of self-drive programmes/route descriptions is broad, and we are convinced that it will inspire you to tailor precisely the trip that will bring your dreams of wondrous adventures to life. Take a closer look at our self-drive programmes and the choice of accommodation and routes. When you choose a self-drive holiday, your vacation and experiences start as soon as you park the car on board. As MS Norröna crosses the North Atlantic, it follows the Viking’s original sailing route close past the Shetland Islands onwards to the Faroe Islands and finally to Iceland, which makes this North Atlantic crossing an excellent opportunity to also experience the Faroes for 2-3 days on your way to Iceland or back again. In winter the highlands are beyond reach, and only accessible by 4WD during the summer.  Gásadalur, Vágar GOODREASONS TO TRAVEL TO THE FAROE ISLANDS In the deep North Atlantic lie 18 beautiful islands just waiting to be discovered. The Faroes are synonymous with unspoilt beauty and untouched nature, new Nordic cuisine, preserved architecture, the world’s cleanest air and freshest water. An exciting and unique combination of nature and culture at their best. This is why Lonely Planet chose the Faroe Islands as one of the planet’s top travel destinations and National Geographic Traveller named the Faroe Islands the world’s most unspoilt islands. This is where you can immerse yourself in scenery most people recognise from The Lord of the Rings films. Nowhere in the Faroe Islands will you be further than 5 km from the ocean and from every- where you can enjoy breathtaking views of its more than 340 mountaintops. The large swathes of untouched landscapes are also easy to access. Of the 18 islands, 17 are accessible and 6 are interconnected by bridges or tunnels. This is part of what makes the Faroe Islands so special; while you are surrounded by incredible untamed landscapes in the middle of the North Atlantic, every modern comfort is available to you. You simply have to experience the green cliff islands, that the Vikings fell in love with over 1000 years ago when they settled down and started building the society of hospitable people, who are so eager to welcome today’s visitors. In this catalogue and on our website you will find our selection of self-drive holiday packages. You can choose between spending your nights at a hotel in Tórshavn, out in the countryside at a guesthouse or more privately in a holiday home. Or maybe you choose to go on an island hopping, perhaps the best way to experience the Faroes Islands. The Faroe Islands 24

TÓRSHAVN With only 20,000inhabitants, Tórshavn is not just one of the world’s smallest capitals, but also one of the most charming ones. This dynamic city, with its creative, inno- vative and highly educated population, is the political and cultural hub of the Faroes, and, fond as they are of their traditions and cultural legacy, local residents are also keen to embrace emerging global trends. All this means that Tórshavn offers a fascinating mix of Faroese cultural history and all the amenities you would expect to find in a modern 21st century capital. The city is a melting pot of old and new. To take in its contrasts, explore Tórshavn start- ing from its oldest area down by the harbour, Tinganes, where little grass-thatched houses stretch along narrow meandering alleys then stroll up towards the mountain- sides, you will find that the residential neighbourhoods grow younger and trendier as you ascend. KIRKJUBØUR The village Kirkjubøur is the place in the Faroes where you will find the most remarkable relics of the past. Dur- ing the Middle Ages the village was the cultural and reli- gious centre of the Faroes and part of the Catholic Church of Norway. The seminary in Kirkjubøur was the first and only one in the Faroes up until the reformation in 1538. King Sverri of Norway grew up here, where he also at- tended the seminary and was ordained. Today there are around 80 inhabitants in Kirkjubøur, which is a 15-minute drive from Tórshavn. VESTMANNA Vestmanna is the starting point for excursions to the awe-inspiring bird cliffs and grottos known as Vestman- nabjörgini. In the high season there are several daily de- partures for the bird cliffs, which is a popular excursion, both among international and local visitors. The boats sail along the mountainside and up to the cliffs them- selves, which face the Atlantic sea head on, before head- ing through narrow straits and into deep grottos formed by the crashing waves over millions of years, to bring you close to the 600-metre-high vertical wall of rock where thousands of seabirds breed. In these majestic surround- ings you can feel one with nature, and you will understand why a deeply rooted respect for the forces of nature perme- ates Faroese culture.  Mykines BOOK EXCURSIONS AT WWW.EXCURSIONS.FO Inspiration to your stay on the Faroe Islands 26

GJÓGV The most photographedvillage in the Faroes is probably Gjógv, which is located in the northernmost part of Eystu- roy. In order to reach Gjógv you will have to cross a high mountain ridge from where you will see a large green val- ley with striking mountains on both sides. At the very bot- tom of the valley, the colourful houses are dotted around a beautiful crystal-clear river with a little dam where chil- dren play all summer. But the village is best known for its natural harbour. Gjógv means gorge in Faroese and it is precisely in the great gorge cutting into the landscape that the natural harbour is located. Take all the steps down into the gorge, down to the harbour and take in the im- mense power of nature in surroundsound. THE NORTHERN ISLANDS Klaksvík is the central hub of the Northern Isles: Kalsoy, Kunoy, Borðoy, Viðoy, Svínoy and Fugloy. The Northern Isles are characterised by towering mountains on the eastern side the islands taper down towards a jagged coastline, which cuts the slopes off into low cliffs, while the northern side is characterised by rugged majestic cliff promontories. The two smallest islands, Svínoy and Fugloy, can only be reached by boat or helicopter, while bridges, dams and tunnels interlink Kunoy, Borðoy and Viðoy, but you will need to catch the ferry to get to Kalsoy. SANDOY Sandoy is the fifth largest island in the Faroes and, along with Suðuroy, makes up the large southern island pair in the archipelago. Sandoy is considered the flattest island, with broad valleys and many little lakes, low rounded mountains and sandy beaches. The gently rolling moun- tains make it appear greener than the other islands with their more rugged craggy mountains. MYKINES Mykines island is the westernmost outpost of the Faroes. This island is known for its teeming birdlife as it attracts hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, which nest here in summer. Mykines is also home to the only gannet colony in the Faroes, which in itself makes it quite the at- traction, but the charming little puffins with their colour- ful beaks are probably the island’s main lure, possibly be- cause they are usually happy to pose with their beaks full of fish. Sailing to Mykines takes just under one hour and is one of the best ways to see Tindhólmur up close. The town is a charming blend of old and new. In the area around the harbour lies Tinganes, where the government is located. The ‘old town’ of Tórshavn is also here. The cute and small houses have been restored over the last years and the area has turned in to a cosy place where people want to live. Skansin is located over the har- bour. Exciting excursions during theCruise EXCURSIONS INCLUDED  Kirkjubøur, the Faroe Islands TUESDAY – ICELAND UNIQUE DAY TRIP TO LAKE MÝVATN Duration approx. 10 hours On this day trip we drive from Seyðisfjörður up to the beautiful 620 m high mountain pass, Fjarðarheiði, and further down to the town of Egilsstaðir. The trip contin- ues through the breathtaking valley, Jökuldalurin, and we will make a short photo stop at the dark desert landscape, Dimmufjallgarður. During the trip we pass Horseborg, where several movie scenes for major Hollywood produc- tions have been filmed. We will make a stop at Námafjall, where we will see roaring pseudocrats and steamy sul- phates. We are going to see the bubbly mud puddles and walk on the geothermal mud. We will make a stop at the Jarðböðin Nature Bath, where we will have a light lunch. A must on this trip is to bathe in the hot water from ge- othermal sources (entrence fee not included). Afterwards we will visit Dimmuborgir, which is an interesting lava landscape. On our return trip we drive to Dettifoss, which is a waterfall in northern Iceland. The waterfall is 44 me- ters high and 100 m wide and has an average water flow rate of 193 cubic meters per second, making Dettifoss Eu- rope’s most powerful waterfall. This is without a doubt the highlight of the trip. MONDAY – THE FAROE ISLANDS BUS TOUR TO HISTORICAL KIRKJUBØ Duration approx. 4 hours Kirkjubø is the historical heart of the Faroes. The little village is located on the south west coast of Streymoy and offers a stunning view of the islands Hestur and Koltur. In the Middle Ages it was the Faroese Episcopal See, which made it the country’s spiritual and cultural hub. On this excursion we will drive through Tórshavn, quite possibly the world’s smallest capital, and then up across beautiful mountains, past the village Velbastað clinging to the steep slopes. The bus trip will be both scenic and informative, as it is guided in English, Danish and Ger- man. The local farmer will be ready to greet us in Kirkjubø and guide us on a visit to the enigmatic Magnus Cathe- dral, built around the year 1300 by Bishop Erlendur, and then to St. Olaf’s Church and the Kirkjubøargarður estate farmhouse (Roykstovan), a stave house dating back to the turn of the first millennium, it is said to be the world’s oldest inhabited wooden house. To round off the visit, our host will invite us for hot drinks and pastries in the at- mospheric Roykstovan. Included in this bus tour is also a guided walk in the old part of Tórshavn. From the beginning of 20th century Reyðarfjörður was a trading- and fishing port. Due to the good port con- ditions and the strategic location, Reyðarfjörður became the second largest of the Allied bases in Iceland during World War II. In Reyðarfjörður you have the opportunity to visit the war museum, located at the old camp area (en- trence fee not included). Next we continue to Egilsstaðir and further along the southeastern bank of Lake Lögurinn, where we pass the beautiful Hallormsstaðarskógur, which is the largest forest in Iceland. Our next stop is Skriðuk- laustur – Cultural Centre East Iceland – a near millenni- um-old manor, turned cloister and finally cultural institute, Gunnarstofnun, dedicated to Gunnar Gunnarsson, one of Iceland’s most renowned 20th century authors. During our stay there, a lunch buffet will be served in the charming manor café, Klausturkaffi. Right next to the cultural in- stitute lies Snæfellsstofa, the Visitors’ Centre built for the Vatnajökull National Park, which is Europe’s largest. Finally, on our way back, we will have about an hour stop over for relaxing or strolling in Egilsstaðir before we head to Seyðisfjörður. THURSDAY – THE FAROE ISLANDS BUSTRIP TO ROMANTIC GJÓGV Duration approx. 4 hours The village Gjógv is nestled on the outermost north-east- ern tip of Eysturoy, the second largest island in the Faroes. On our way East we will cross the bridge connecting the islands Streymoy and Eysturoy, pass the imposing sum- mits of Slættaratind (882 m) and Gráfelli (857 m), the tall- est mountains in the archipelago, located between the vil- lages of Eiði and Gjógv. Gjógv is best known for its picturesque scenery dotted with multicoloured old houses built around its vital natural harbour, which lies protected in the gorge that has given the village its name, gjógv means gorge in Faroese. It is a fitting name; the harbour carved by the sea was the vil- lage’s lifeline before the arrival of modern roads. This is a very small village – with only 30 inhabitants now- adays, but it attracts many visitors, both foreigners and locals, who are enchanted by its romantic tranquillity. Gjógv is the perfect spot for a leisurly stroll, and we will ex- plore the little village before heading to its charming guest- house Gjáargarður for hot drinks and homemade pastries. Catch an afternoon movie at the cinema, and in the evening we offer culinary adventures, whether you choose our extensive Norröna Buffet or the Simmer Dim Gourmet. For a perfect end to the day, you could stop by our Naust Bar and offer your sweetheart a delicious cocktail, while listening to live music from the famous Faroese musicians playing on board.« Tax Free Shop Captain 46

CANCELLATION AGREEMENT It is possible to take out cancellation agreement with SML, which is 5% of the cost of the travel. If the travel cost is to be refunded to the traveller the insurance amount will be de- ducted from the total cost. The cancellation agreement will cover if the client has to cancel the trip due to death or severe acute illness which requires hospitalization or prescribed sickbed, or due to something equivalent (eg. Burglary), of the client himself, spouse, part- ner, parents or in-laws, children or grandchildren, siblings, grandparents, sister or brother in law or travel companion, provided that a medical document or in case of burglary a copy of the review to the police in the form of a written receipt with the reference number is sent to SML within 7 days after the cancellation. It is a condition of coverage that the insured as soon as possible is examined by a doctor - either by own GP or doctor on call. The client shall make the cancellation immediately or as soon as possible after the circumstances have arisen, and the client bears the expenses related to the issuance of documents. CHANGES/CANCELLATION BY SML BEFORE DEPARTURE Passengers are entitled to updates on arrivals and departures. Information about departure/ arrival is available on phone +298345800 or on www.smyrilline.com. If the package tour is cancelled by SML before departure or cannot be completed as agreed, the customer must be notified as soon as possible. However, this does not apply to minor changes/trivialities. At the same time as changes/cancellations are announced, SML must inform the customer about the possibility to complain. The customer may terminate the agreement and have any amount refunded that has been paid according to the agreement, or take part in another package tour of his/her own choice, if SML can offer this without disproportionate costs or losses. Within adequate time after receipt of the notify caution of change, the customer must notify SML. If the customer chooses to participate in a package tour of a higher value than the one originally booked, the customer must pay the price difference. If the package tour has a lower value than the one originally booked, SML must refund the price differ- ence. Responsibility and exemption from responsibility for SML in case of changes etc.: If the customer suffers a loss due to SML’s changes or as a consequence of cancellation of the package tour, the customer has a claim for a refund in correspondence with general refund regulations, unless the cancellation/deficiency is caused by the fact that the number of travellers mentioned in the agreement has not been registered – that a certain percent- age of travellers has been not achieved and that SML has notified the customer of this no later than 14 days before departure (for shorter excursions/bus journeys a shorter time of notice may apply) or that the loss is caused by a third party or external circumstances of no relevance to the package tour, and that SML or anyone, for whom SML is responsible, could not have foreseen these circumstances by applying adequate care when entering the agreement or could have avoided or averted them i.e. force majeure or circumstances similar to force majeure. SML does not enter into the statutory, objectively based responsi- bility that may lie with carriers, hotels and other collaborators. SML does not assume any responsibility for irrelevant third party damages on persons or for lost, stolen or destroyed luggage/vehicles etc. For the boat journey SML’s travelling regulations apply. Reference is made to the timetable. Complaints and limitation of liability: If the customer finds any deficiencies during the journey or in relation to the destination, he/she must notify SML or the service provider in question to make it possible for them to remedy the deficiency. A deficiency occurs, if the traveller does not receive the services and performances that through catalogues, advertisements or special agreements with SML have been stated on the participant receipt, or the performances are of a poorer quality than what was agreed or guaranteed. If SML shall remedy the deficiency, the customer cannot claim a proportion- al reduction or terminate the agreement. If remedying may cause SML disproportionate costs or considerable disadvantages, the customer may be referred to claim a proportional price reduction or to cancel. Refund claims must be proposed to SML or the intermediary within reasonable time after the journey has ended. At the same time SML limit their re- sponsibility for deficiencies and damages to the same extent as the following international conventions that may apply for the service providers, who are to blame for the deficient part of the package tour: For air carriage: The Warsaw Convention; For sea carriage: The Athens Convention; For train carriage: The convention for international rail road trans- ports. Travellers’ accident insurance: As very low refunds are often paid according to the international conventions, and as the traveller must pay any costs concerning medical care and ambulance transportation, we recommend that travellers take out a travellers’ accident insurance. Ask our travel consultants for details. NORTH ATLANTIC CRUISE EXCURSIONS SML reserves the right to change or cancel the excursions both in Iceland and on the Faroe Islands in the event of challenging weather conditions. If an excursion is cancelled, SML will refund the prepaid amount on board. Refund will be in DKK. SML strongly recom- mends booking the excursions in advance, as SML cannot guarantee that there is space on the busses when booking on board. SMYRIL LINE EXCURSIONS (EXCURSIONS IN THE FAROE ISLANDS) Smyril Line Excursions reserves the right to change or cancel the excursions in the event of challenging weather conditions. Your safety is our highest priority. We draw your attention to the risks associated with the unique characteristics of the Faroese environment. Consequently, should you venture into the Faroese environment, either alone, following inspiration from our website/catalogue, or together with one of our tour guides, you do so entirely at your own risk. SML accepts no liability for any injury or loss that may occur as a result. As a safety precaution Smyril Line Excursions reserves the right to deny people to go on a excursion if the guide finds the footwear / clothes etc. unsuitable for hiking. The excursions are not suitable for children under the age of 7. CARRIAGE BY INDEPENDENT CARRIERS For land transport in connection with package tours via independent carriers other terms and conditions may apply for these companies’ part of the package tour. These regulations are supplied when the package tour is booked. Especially the rules concerning check-in time, pets and luggage may vary from one company to another. TRAVEL TIMES All scheduled times are local times and subject to weather conditions. SML reserves the right to change the timetable. Passengers are ordered to stay updated on departure times and possible changes on our website www.smyrilline.com or call +298 345800. WINTER SAILING TO ICELAND SML always plans for safe crossings and, should conditions prove adverse, we may have to change the sailing schedule accordingly. Should weather conditions and/or technical problems prevent safe sailing between the Faroe Islands and Iceland or between Iceland and the Faroe Islands, SML reserves the right to change the sailing schedule, so that we depart earlier or later than planned. SML also reserves the right to cancel a departure. If MS Norröna departs earlier or later than planned or if a departure is cancelled, SML is not obliged to pay any compensation, pay for any alternative means of transport or offer any free accommodation whatsoever. Passengers are liable for these expenses. SML can, however, offer passengers who are stranded in the Faroes free accommodation on board MS Norröna, although reasonable payment for any meals will be required. If passengers are stranded in Iceland, SML is not liable for any expenses they may incur owing to this, including, but not limited to, hotel expenses. However, SML would be very happy to help customers find accommodation, should this be required. As an example, if a week passes without Norröna reaching Seyðisfjørður in Iceland, and a passenger on board Norröna wishes to get to Iceland sooner, SML will not pay for a flight; passengers are solely responsible for any such alternative travel arrangements. However, if a passenger is travelling with a car and wishes to have it shipped to Iceland, SML will ensure, together with the passenger, that the vehicle is shipped to Seyðisfjørður in Iceland for free on the next trip. Passengers are required to stay updated on departure times and possible changes on our website smyrilline.com or call +298 345800. SML will always do their outmost to inform passengers about any changes in the sailing schedule, therefore it is very important that passengers provide SML with a telephone number, which is reachable at all times. CHECK-IN Check-in times can be found on our website. Please inform check-in personnel when travelling with special needs so the appropriate consideration can be shown. Please note that departure time is the time/date which is stat- ed on the ticket. SML reserves the right to cancel journeys for persons who have not pre- sented themselves for check-in within the check in times. SML reserves the right to sail as soon as check-in has closed. Access to the car deck during the voyage cannot be ensured. NO-SHOW Customer’s obligations – failure to appear – unused services: If the customer has not cancelled the package tour, and/or if the traveller does not appear at the stated time and place for departure or home journey, or if the traveller is not able to commence or finish the journey due to missing travel documents, e.g. valid passport, necessary visa or vaccination documents etc., SML is entitled to charge the total price of the package tour. This also applies, if the customer is expelled due to repeated gross negligence of the regulations of the carrier, hotel, etc. If a customer fails to appear at the stated transports or in any other way fails to use the performances included in the package tour, he cannot claim compen- sation for any unused performances/services. The customer must keep himself informed of the time of the home journey in case he has booked a roundtrip on his own or for some other reason has left his travelling group. Furthermore he must obey any regulations for reconfirming airline distances that are included in individual journeys and package tours without the assistance of a conductor. Failing to reconfirm means that the airlines are en- titled to make the booked seats available to other parties. Applicable law and venue: All claims deriving from a package tour, for which the above conditions have been approved, are adjusted according to Danish law. Venue for disputes: The Copenhagen Maritime and Commercial Court. LEAVING THE CABINS The cabins are at your disposal until 2 hours before arrival.
