Underrated DC Attractions
1. 4 MOST UNDERRATED
WASHINGTON DC TOURIST
ATTRACTIONS
BY: LAURA FLIPPIN
2. Visiting historical attractions in Washington, DC can
be a complete nightmare.
Anyone who has tried squeezing past hordes of tourists
at the Lincoln Memorial or the National Museum of
Natural History knows what I mean.
But the great thing about DC is that its absolutely
brimming with interesting historical sites, even if you
don’t visit the classic tour-guide favorites.
3. Avoid this and try out some of the most underrated
historical sites that DC has to offer!
4. LINCOLN COTTAGE
Instead of visiting the Lincoln
Memorial, try out the Lincoln
Cottage instead to see a different
side of America’s 16th president.
Located just 3 miles from the
White House and U.S. Capitol
building, this beautiful vintage
cottage is actually a museum
open to the public. For $15 you’ll
get a guided tour that includes
multimedia presentations to help
make the history come to life.
5. THE DC WAR MEMORIAL
Ditch the National World War II
Memorial and head to this charming
war memorial located just a few steps
away! This marble dome-and-pillar
masterpiece honors World War I
veterans and commemorates their will
and spirit. But what is most special
about this memorial is its quiet and
woody location. If the World War II
Memorial feels too crowded, make a
trip to this much more serene and
contemplative memorial to enjoy
some peace and quiet.
6. THE TITANIC MEMORIAL
This beautiful granite statue is a
thirteen-foot-tall figure with his
arms outstretched, and no it is
not Leo. The Memorial, located in
southwest DC, was erected to
commemorate those men who
sacrificed their lives so that their
wives and children might live. I
recommend visiting during sunset
or dusk to get a beautiful view of
the sky, statue, and water all in
one memorable moment.
7. NATIONAL ARBORETUM
This 446 acre arboretum is home to
beautiful gardens and historical trees,
including bonsai trees over a century
old. As you walk around the vast
acreage, you’ll find plenty of art
sculptures and natural beauty, all
without bumping into hundreds of
tourists. The National Arboretum also
offers worthwhile workshops like Full
Moon Hikes and Holiday Wreath
Making. If you’re interested in seeing a
whole other side of DC, then
consider visiting this idyllic estate.
