The legend of Santa Claus originated from St. Nicholas, a generous bishop known for his red cape and white beard who was said to perform miracles. The Christmas tree tradition began in 16th century Germany, where people decorated fir trees with fruits and paper, and Martin Luther is credited with being the first to light a tree with candles after seeing the beauty of stars through tree branches one night. Decorating and lighting trees inside homes at Christmas then became a tradition.
