Lightning Talk #9: How UX and Data Storytelling Can Shape Policy by Mika Aldabaux singapore
How can we take UX and Data Storytelling out of the tech context and use them to change the way government behaves?
Showcasing the truth is the highest goal of data storytelling. Because the design of a chart can affect the interpretation of data in a major way, one must wield visual tools with care and deliberation. Using quantitative facts to evoke an emotional response is best achieved with the combination of UX and data storytelling.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

7. Kompozycja w naczyniu
z dzwonkami
Przygotowujemy:
• kwiaty: lilie, margaretki, gerbera miniaturka, goździk miniaturka,
• dodatki zielone: dzwonki irlandzkie, paprotka, owoce dziurawca ogrodo-
wego,
• pojemniki i pozostałe dodatki: ceramiczny, okrągły flakon, misa lub donicz-
ka, gąbka florystyczna do roślin żywych, folia, cienki, giętki drucik.
7 z 24
8. Misę wykładamy folią, w której umieszczamy zieloną gąbkę florystyczną. Gąb-
kę należy namoczyć wcześniej w wodzie.
W pierwszej kolejności do gąbki wbijamy dzwonki irlandzkie i związujemy je
u góry cienkim drucikiem.
8 z 24
9. Wokół dzwonków wbijamy lilie i stopniowo dokładamy pozostałe kwiaty tzn.
z przodu gerbery i goździki, po bokach, z tyłu i w pozostałej wolnej przestrzeni –
margaretki oraz owoce dziurawca.
Na końcu ożywiamy kompozycję zielonymi dodatkami.
9 z 24
10. Kremowy bukiet ślubny
Przygotujmy:
• kremowe róże (najlepiej dwa rodzaje: bardzo jasne i ton ciemniejsze – uzy-
skamy głębię w kompozycji),
• kremowe goździki miniaturki,
• kremowe astromelie oraz eustomy,
• gałązki ruskusu oraz liście palmy.
Poza tym:
• mikrofon wypełniony gąbką florystyczną,
• cienki, giętki drucik,
• taśmę florystyczną, kremową wstążkę,
• przypinkę do przywieszki.
10 z 24
11. Na samym początku zanurzamy mikrofon z gąbką w wodzie, aby pianka na-
siąkła.
Czekając, aż gąbka będzie gotowa możemy przygotować rośliny. Przycinamy
je na wysokość ok. 10 cm.
Mocowanie kwiatów zaczynamy zawsze od góry, a kwiaty wbijamy ściśle
i w taki sposób, aby obok siebie były zawsze różne rośliny. Na zdjęciach powyżej
widok z przodu i z tyłu.
11 z 24
12. Warto również wcześniej przygotować sobie pojemnik (flakon), do którego bę-
dziemy mogli odłożyć bukiet w trakcie pracy.
12 z 24
13. Do rączki mikrofonu przywiązujemy, za pomocą drucika, łodygi róż. Łodygi
przycinamy na jednakową długość.
Teraz będziemy potrzebować liście palmy, których końce musimy przyciąć
o połowę. Liście palmy wbijamy między mikrofon a łodygi róż i wywijamy je na
zewnątrz, a następnie mocujemy tasiemką do łodyg.
13 z 24
14. Tak wywinięte liście palmy sprawią, że gałązki ruskusu podniosą się do góry.
Następnie kremową, szeroką wstążką maskujemy wiązanie i łączenie liści z łody-
gami.
14 z 24
15. Kompozycja na planie
trójkąta
Potrzebujemy:
• okrągły pojemnik wypełniony gąbką florystyczną,
• 2 liście facji,
• liść – aspidistra,
• 2 czerwone anturium,
• 2 gałązki białej margaretki,
• 4 gałązki goździka miniaturki,
• kilka gałązek gipsówki,
• tiki.
Pojemnik wypełniamy szczelnie gąbką florystyczną.
15 z 24
18. Teraz wbijamy symetrycznie po bokach białą chryzantemę, a wolne przestrze-
nie uzupełniamy tikami.
18 z 24
19. Aby nadać objętości naszej kompozycji, dokładamy gałązki gipsówki i goździ-
ki. Rośliny, jak zwykle, wbijamy pod lekkim kątem. I gotowe.
19 z 24
20. Kula Bożonarodzeniowa
Potrzebujemy:
• mech,

21. Z mchu formujemy kulę. Jeśli nie mamy zbyt dużo mchu, możemy zrobić naj-
pierw kulę z papieru, a następnie okleić ją mchem. Na rynku dostępne są również
gotowe kule ze styropianu, które łatwo można „obtoczyć” w mchu.
Kulę obwiązujemy drucikiem z koralikami i wbijamy szpilki.

22. Stroik adwentowy
Zwykle cztery tygodnie przed Bożym Narodzeniem ustawiamy w widocznym
miejscu wieńce adwentowe. Na wieńcu możemy zamocować cztery świece, które
zapalimy w kolejne niedziele Adwentu (w pierwszym tygodniu jedną, w drugim –
dwie, w trzecim – trzy, a w czwartym – wszystkie cztery).
Oprócz wieńca adwentowego można wykonać również stroik adwentowy. Wyko-
nanie jest bardzo proste.
Jako pojemnik możemy użyć zwykłej brytfanki, którą wypełniamy gąbką flory-
styczną.
Do gąbki przytwierdzamy klejem świece oraz mech.
Naturalna stylizacja, którą podkreślamy laskami cynamonu i szyszkami.
