The 5-era strategy pattern document describes a typical strategy adoption process that organizations go through in 5 phases: 1) Traditional approaches, 2) Experimentation, 3) Proliferation of different experiments, 4) Standardization on approaches that work, and 5) Visionary approaches that build on the standardization. It notes that for a strategy to be successful it needs to reach the standardization phase. It also provides a graphical representation of this 5 phase process over time, showing how approaches start traditional and move towards being visionary as organizations progress through the phases with the related "dramas" at each transition point.
