- 3. Kaufman has workedtirelessly to shape the website into a media outlet that is free to dig deeper … to ask questions that are unasked … to bring attention to the stories that remain invisible. Over the years, she has focused on innovative ways to shine a spotlight on issues that often went unnoticed. The many initiatives included Global Voices: Truthdig Women Reporting, which recruits women journalists throughout the world to report on important stories in their home countries, as well as the Countering Violence Against Women project that calls attention to the horrendous impacts of the mistreatment of women and girls. Kaufman also produced multi-media coverage of front-line activism so vital to a vibrant democracy. Drawing upon her journalistic expertise and passion for progressive views, Kaufman actively ran the company and its website and helped establish and nurture Truthdig’s vision as a source of serious and intellectually rigorous journalism. Since the outset, in addition to her duties as Publisher and CEO, Kaufman shared oversight of the website’s content and editorial decision-making. She also had a major role in identifying and recruiting many of its leading contributors. The high quality of its work has been repeatedly recognized by its peers. Those honors include six Webby awards, three awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, and 31 first-place awards from the Los Angeles Press Club. Kaufman’s love of journalism and the media began as a child, inspired by her father who was a prolific consumer of news. At age 16, she started her career at Los Angeles PBS station KCET and remained affiliated with its news and current affairs department for more than five years. Later, she worked at the Los Angeles Times, first as a researcher and then as a staff reporter. Kaufman earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Film Theory and Criticism from the University of California at Santa Cruz and her Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Southern California. She also completed post-graduate publishing studies at Stanford and Yale. Kaufman is a former Board member of the ACLU and Human Rights Watch and was on the Los Angeles Advisory Group for the International Women’s Media Foundation. Truthdig is on hiatus.
