now become one of the
fastest growing engineer­

entrepreneurship in the campus, a
first-of-its-kind in India.
Trinity College (www.thetrinity-
college.in), which has the approval
of All India Council for Techni­
cal Education (AICTE), began the
programme with just one faculty-
run company on the campus in
2013. Currently, the engineering
institution, which is affiliated to the
APJ Abdul Kalam Technological
University, hosts more than a dozen
companies that are owned by the
campus faculties.
“We have 15 companies here
where students can work as appren­
tices and apply what they learn. Per­
haps, it is the best way engineering
colleges can produce value-added
engineers,” says Dr. Arun Suren-
dran, Principal, Trinity College of
Engineering.
The company-on-campus model
helps faculty members as well as
students remain in constant touch
with the latest developments in their
respective fields of study. These
companies function as service and
product innovation-oriented ones.

State Government’s IT Department
and Automation Garage, supported
by UST Global.
Dr. Arun, who holds his BTech
from IIT Mumbai and PhD from
Texas A&M University, suggests that
application-driven learning should
be complemented by continuously
updating both skills and curricu-
lums to keep pace with technologi­
cal advancement.
“While syllabuses should form
the basis of learning, the students
should also inculcate in them a habit
of deep and value-added hands-on
learning. Students should be moti­
vated to learn outside the textbook
and that, without any doubt, will
help graduates come out with ideas,
leading to entrepreneurship and in­
novation,” he added.
To expand the institutions reach
and foster innovation among its
faculty and students, Innovation &
Entrepreneurship Development Cell
(IEDC) was set up on the campus in
2013.
The IEDC is guided by the Kerala
Startup Mission (KSUM). It helps
recognise ideas and innovations and
supports the entrepreneurs to help
realise their dreams. The mission
helps entrepreneurs develop prod­
ucts (software and hardware) having
market value, prepare business plans
and establish a company within the
campus. The facility can incubate
more than five companies at any
given point in time.
The college is home to state-of-
the-art labs, with the help of which
faculty and students take up exter­
nal projects like developing breath
analysers for Kerala Police, creating
IoT products, custom-made robotics
and electronics for the engineering
industry as well as the healthcare
sector.
Trinity has been rated as the top
college for entrepreneurship by the
university and Kerala Startup Mis­
sion. The other honours received by
the college include the ‘best emerg­
ing chapter’ and ‘best faculty chap­
ter’ awards instituted by the Indian
Society for Technical Education.
