UMass Dartmouth’s International Program Moves to Downtown Fall River
On August 4, 2014, UMass
Dartmouth Chancellor
Divina Grossman was
joined by Mayor William A.
Flanagan, State Representa-
tives Carole Fiola, Paul
Schmid and Alan Silvia,
and students, faculty and
staff from the University’s
international students edu-
cation program for a ribbon
cutting ceremony on the
second floor of the Cherry
and Webb building located
at 139 South Main Street in
downtown Fall River. The
ceremony celebrated the
move of the university’s
Navitas partnership to
downtown Fall River.
The goal of the program is
to bring 100 students,
faculty and staff to the area
to learn, shop and dine in
the coming academic year.
Under the program, Navitas,
the university’s international
education partner, will deliv-
er courses to students at the
downtown site. The program
is expected to grow
significantly over the com-
ing years.
A key component of the
initiative will be connect-

purchase food using the
university ID card. This
program will not only ben-
efit students, but will also
bolster business at local
establishments.

Sanford Brownell “Sammy”
White was born in Fall Riv-
er, MA in 1888. He attended
Fall River High School
where he scored the most
points ever in a basketball
game with 90 points. He
then attended preparatory
school at Exeter in New
Hampshire where he played
both baseball and football.
In 1908, White enrolled in
Princeton University where
he became a four-sport ath-
lete competing in football,
baseball, basketball and
track. Baseball was White’s
true love and he was selected
as captain of the baseball
team as a junior and led the
team to a baseball champion-
ship.
White reportedly disliked
football, but was coaxed into
joining the team in 1911 at
which time he became a
starter at left end and led the
team to the 1911 eastern
college football champion-
ship. The 1911 Princeton
team completed the season

8-0-2 while outscoring oppo-
nents 179 to 15. Wins includ-
ed an 8-6 victory over Harvard
where White scored all 8 of
Princeton’s points and a 6-3
win over Yale, who Princeton
had not beaten since 1903
where White again scored
Princeton’s only points.
At the end of the 1911 season
White was chosen as a first-
team All-American. He was
also the president of Prince-
ton's senior class and Senior
Student Council and was voted
most popular, most respected,
best all-around man, and the
man who did the most for his
class. White graduated from
Princeton in June 1912.
Following graduation White
represented International Har-
vester Corporation before
working for Princeton Bank
and Trust Co. In 1918, White
enlisted in the Aviation Sec-
tion, US Signal Corps where
he was commissioned as a sec-
ond lieutenant. White married
and had four children. He died
in April 1964 at age 75.
