Editor's Notes

  1. Despite being a small landlocked Southeast Asian country, Laos has numerous tourist attractions. In the country’s north are beautiful mountain ranges, cool weather and the picturesque countryside. Vientiane, the laidback capital, wonderfully reflects the ancient legacies of Laos as well as the more recent French colonial days. Discover amazing sites such as the Pha That Luang golden stupa, the mysterious Plain of Jars, Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands), the Angkor-era temple at Champasak and many more. In Laos, you can trek through tropical jungles, hike verdant mountains, visit remote villages, meet fascinating tribal people or take relaxing cruises on the mighty Mekong.
  2. Check out Travablue’s country guide to Laos here: https://www.travablue.com/en/country-facts-laos#travel_guide
  3. Laos is a tropical country warm throughout the year; although the mountain area is cooler. The best time to visit Laos is from November to February, when the weather is dry and cool.
  4. In 1995, UNESCO declared the north central Lao city of Luang Prabang a World Heritage Site for its “exceptional fusion of Lao traditional architecture and 19th and 20th century European colonial style buildings.” Modern Luang Prabang is a famous tourist destination, known for numerous stunningly decorated sites such as the Wat Xieng Thong monastery, Wat Chom Si temple and the Haw Kham (Royal Palace) complex. The city is also popular for its proximity to Kuang Si waterfalls and the Pak Ou Caves. The Champasak Heritage Landscape including the Vat Phou Temple Complex, Laos’s other UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located about 500 kilometers south of capital Vientiane. The temple complex is almost 1,000 years old and is hailed as a remarkable example of Khmer-style architecture. Close to Vat Phou are the ruins of Shestupura, believed to be the oldest urban settlement in Southeast Asia.
  5. With some of the most significant forests remaining in Indochina, Laos enjoys a high-level of biodiversity. It’s home to one of the largest remaining populations of Asian elephants in the region. The critically endangered and rarely seen saola deer, sometimes called the Asian unicorn, are found only in the Annamite Mountains encompassing Laos and Vietnam. The western black-crested gibbon, one of the world’s rarest gibbon species, and small populations of Indochinese tiger can be spotted in Lao forests. Other than mammals, Laos also harbors impressive 165 species of amphibians and reptiles.
  6. Laos offers many opportunities to participate in thrilling activities. Go rock climbing in Pha Tam Kam, mountain biking in Luang Prabang and Savannakhet or trek and hike through beautiful villages and biodiversity conservation areas. Try tubing in Nam Song River or go cave exploring on the legendary Mekong.
  7. Lao cuisine is notably distinct from other Southeast Asian fare, and is known for liberal use of fresh vegetables, local herbs and sticky rice. Lao people eat so much sticky rice they call themselves the "luk khao niaow," the children of sticky rice. One of Laos’s most popular dishes is papaya salad, made with unripe papaya and flavored with lime, hot chili, salt, fish sauce and palm sugar. The spicy and sour Tom Yum soup is another local favorite. The quintessential Lao dish is Laap, made with raw meat or fish. Due to poverty, Lao people are used to making food out of whatever’s available, so the daring traveler can try raw duck blood soup, water buffalo intestine or iguana.
