This document lists and defines various transitional words used to link ideas between sentences and paragraphs. It categorizes transitional words into groups such as addition, comparison, contrast, enumeration, concession, exemplification, inference, summary/conclusion, time and sequence, result, reformulation, replacement, place/position, and miscellaneous adverbs. Over 100 transitional words and phrases are defined.

Miscellaneous- adverbs may be used at the beginning of sentences to show how the
sentence which follows relates to the rest of the text. Many of them reveal the writer’s
attitude to the idea they are expressing and so can be used as an important tool.
