Trade unions-Hitler youth-Education
   The workforce was made up of German
    working class that never supported the Nazis.
   On the 2nd of may 1933 the Nazis attack trade
    unions and the SA destroyed its head
    quarters.
   Trade union leaders were sent to Dachau
    Hitler outlawed trade unions and cut the
    capacity of an apponent
 Hitler replaces the leaders with the DAP
 Some say DAP were better because bosses
  weren’t allowed to exploit their workers.
 Others say it was an opportunity of denouncing
 KdF- strength through joy offered a hardworking
  incentive scheme led by Robert Ley
 Robert Ley organised compulsory leisure
  activities like fitness training ‘Aryans’ in order to
  make sure the working class are living the
  German way
   Germany had a tradition of youth
    organisations. Church ones, scout ones.
   They were abolished and replaced by Nazi
    organisations
   1936 Hitler established a comprehensive
    structure of youth organisations.
   1930- 35,000
    members
   1936- 7 million
    members
   Purpose:
    Indoctrinate young
    Germans and
    prepare them for
    military and warfare
   Paramilitary group
   Led by SA then after 1934 ‘operation
    hummingbird’ led by SS
   Taught physical fitness, weapon training,
    outdoor survival
   Taught to deal with death in combat
   Nazi ideology
   Some enjoyed HJ others resented it and
    disliked the militarism and refused to go

   HJ allowed the SS to identify future leaders or
    officials

   Boys were asked to give information on their
    parents and neighbours to the gestapo
   School was the main tool of indoctrination
   Mixed sex classes were prohibited
   Girls studied ‘ domestic science’ and boys
    studied Chemistry and Physics
   New subjects were added such as Nazi theory
    and Eugenics they were taught to children
    because this taught children that Aryans were
    superior to others and Jews didn’t belong in
    Germany.
   Most schools had a Nazi official in class to
    make sure teachers were following the
    education policy
   Teachers had to be approved by the Nazis
   Books were printed by the Nazi’s
   12 Adolf Hitler schools where for the ‘elite’
   The SS were responsible for the holocaust
    therefore the SS must have gone through
    indoctrination of Hitler Jugend
   Very little resistance to Nazi policies, even in
    WW2 when the ‘Nazi Generation’ was
    entering adult hood
   Between 1933-1945 German youth provided
    high levels of threat and resistance
   Youth were stronger than any other
    democratic group in Germany.
