This study examined the effects of different food labeling designs (certified visual-verbal, visual-verbal, verbal only) on consumer attitudes and trust toward both labeled and unlabeled food products. Results showed that exposure to any production labeling led to more negative evaluations of the unlabeled competing product compared to a control with no labels. While the certified label did not have a greater effect than other designs as hypothesized, the verbal-only label had the smallest negative impact on general attitudes toward the unlabeled product. The study provides insights into how labeling conventions can influence consumer perceptions and implications for the food industry and third-party certification markets. Further research is needed to understand consumer responses and how different label designs truly affect purchase behaviors.
