This document is an endorsement letter from the Sunrise Theatre for the Performing Arts recommending Tony Wilson and his Godfather of Soul Band. The letter describes their January 31, 2009 performance at the Sunrise Theatre, noting that unlike most tribute bands, Tony Wilson and his band brought their own style and talents to entertain over 600 people. The band blew away the audience and theatre staff with their 90+ minute sets that had the crowd dancing and on their feet. Both the audience and theatre staff were impressed with Tony Wilson's performance skills, musicianship, and ability to command an audience. The letter strongly recommends Tony Wilson and his band for any performance venue.

PROCLAMATION
BY
The Honorary Johnny Ford CEO, of the World Conference of Mayors
and Bob Davis, President of the World Conference of Mayors, and its Members
presented to
Tony Wilson the Young James Brown and his Godfather of Soul Band
Designating MAY 3
as
" JAMES BROWN DAY"
WHEREAS, Dr. James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, defined a generation, a movement and a culture, and when he died on
Christmas Day of 2006, a little bit of all us died with him. Initially, James Brown’s Spirit and Essence defined Black
America; but his music, his work ethic, and his dedication to change, brought together races, generations and
countries.
The spirit of James Brown, the “the King of Soul,” is not “just” Black America...but all Americans. “Livin in
America” has become the theme song for us all to celebrate, as one people, living in one country. What a better
time than on May 3rd, to commemorate James Brown’s Birthday and to recognize him for being one of the biggest
contributors to Soul and Funk music in the America...and the world.
WHEREAS, We the World Conference of Mayors gladly issue this Proclamation to Tony Wilson and the Godfather of Soul
Band and The James Brown Family Foundation (organized by Deanna Brown) in praise and recognition of Tony’s
great work to continue the Legacy and Spirit of James Brown, a man who despite his foibles, worked every day of
his life, overcame massive odds (and constant personal challenges) to free himself and free the mind of his
people—not just for a time but for eternity.
We need to remember what James Brown was—bigger than life, iconic in stature (Elvis, Lennon, and no other
rd
musical genius star shined as bright for 50 years), and on May 3 , we will commemorate what James Brown
stood for, a spirit that invigorated a culturally dead people and gave rise to a pride and identity that forever defined
not just black America...but all America... in a positive way. James Brown turned a jail cell into a studio and a
learning center, and dedicated his life to giving back to the poorest communities and especially, the children. He
was a survivor, a performer, a singer, a dancer, a humanitarian, and a voice for the social order, a TRUE
transformer.
WHEREAS,
Let’s live this year, a year with the first African American President, a year with more economic and social
challenges than we have faced in decades, a year where all of us, black, white, rich and poor, young and old, can
stand in agreement with James Brown’s mission for change of consciousness, and proclaiming positive values.
WHEREAS, Tony Wilson, the Young James Brown, the only entertainer to be personally blessed by the Godfather of Soul
himself, had the vision for this great day. Wilson has re-written one of the Godfather’s masterpieces, “Say it Loud,
I’m Black and I’m Proud” to ...“Say it Loud, Make America Proud”, directly addressing the challenges we face
rd
today. By proclaiming May 3 Dr. James Brown Day, we will also be standing with Tony Wilson and joining his
cause, along with Tomirae Brown (James Brown’s Widow) to continue the Godfather’s legacy and mission for
change, and in doing so, we will also be standing together, saying YES WE CAN.

February 14, 2009
To whom it may concern:
On January 31, 2009, we had Tony Wilson and the Godfather of Soul Band– the Ultimate, ONLY
endorsed- Tribute band to James Brown, by the Godfather of Soul himself – at the Sunrise Theatre
in Fort Pierce, FL.
For anyone looking to hire a band that will bring down the house, you need to look no further than
Tony Wilson and his Godfather of Soul Band. Unlike most tribute bands who act more like
“impersonators” than artists, Tony Wilson and his band (which consists of the original musicians
who backed James Brown) brought their own style, personalities and most importantly, their
incredible musical talents to entertain a crowd of over 600 people (who most of the time were on
their feet clapping and dancing to the moves and grooves of this group).
I have to say, I have seen a lot of “tribute bands” in my time; from Elvis to Springsteen, from
Sinatra to the Temptations, and they have all been “ok” in my book. But this group absolutely
blew me (and the audience) away. The night began with Tony Wilson getting a key to the city
from Commissioner Rufus Alexander for all of the great work he did prior to the concert,
promoting Martin Luther King Day, the Presidential Inauguration and a Talent Contest to find
young stars to include on his show. After Tony received the key, the FUNK came out in Fort
Pierce.
Instead of doing his arranged first Set of 45 minutes, Tony Wilson and the Godfather of Soul Band
went almost 90 minutes...a lot of the time, entertaining the crowd with spontaneous riffs, fantastic
dancing and even Tony himself, walking through the audience like a politician trying to get
votes...shaking hands and making friends. And yes, Tony did moon walk on his head – his
signature move when performing! And the crowd (and us) went crazy.
The second set continued to grab the audience and once, again, went longer than anticipated. In
fact, the audience gave him a standing ovation for over 5 minutes, and of course, Tony and the
band gave an encore performance of “Get up, Get Into It, Get Involved”....and that they did.
In this industry, it is so easy to find fault and nit-pick all aspects of a performance; and on the flip
side, it is not unusual for a “diva-like” performer to fuss over the smallest things; in Tony’s case,
neither happened, and they could have.
14. Audience members could have walked out due to the shows running over the allotted time, but
they didn’t...and actually wanted all they could get. People after the show waited to shake Tony’s
hand and thank for such an amazing show.
Tony himself, could have lost his cool when the caterer failed to come through (providing less
than adequate food for 20 members of a band), or when the cordless microphones and 2 amplifiers
shorted out. But he didn’t and the show not only went on, it was fantastic!
So, in closing, I want to personally recommend Tony Wilson, not just as the front man for James
Brown and the Godfather of Soul Band. Yes, he is amazing when singing Dr. James Brown’s
songs. However, Tony is the ultimate entertainer; he needs to be in Vegas for sure. From the
Temptations to Lou Rawls, from Nat King Cole to Sam Cooke, Tony does it all and does it at
150% ...ALL IN as they say in Poker.
If you’re looking for a performer to command the band, like Glenn Miller or Count Basie; if
you’re looking for a dancer to show you moves that you’ve never seen before (or probably will
never see again); if you’re looking for a soulful vocalists with charm and appeal like Old Blue
Eyes or Stevie Wonder; if you’re looking for someone who can throw down the funk like Bootsy
Collins or James Brown re-incarnated...look no further than to Tony Wilson (AKA the Young
James Brown).
Sincerely,
Renee Page
