Interactive narrative hasn’t changed much in forty years – it’s still ruled by limited options and predestined outcomes. While digital RPG gameplay has become more sophisticated, the stories remain rather basic (albeit better disguised). Remarkably, we still haven’t matched the tabletop role-playing experience.
We need to approach interactive story from a different angle, one that’s natively digital and that takes full advantage of the new content platform paradigm. It won’t be easy, it’ll take a lot of time… but WE’RE WIZARDS, right?!
Objective
To explore the potential of a truly emergent narrative, and explain how playing tabletop role-playing games can get us there.
Target Audience
Storytellers, creators, writers, game developers, and gamers.
Five Things Audience Members Will Learn
An abbreviated history of interactive storytelling
Different approaches to interactive narrative; their pros and cons
Sneaky tricks good Game Masters use to get players invested in a game
How to convert player agency into dramatic agency (also great for GMs)
That they want to play a tabletop RPG (if they haven’t already).

1. Tomb Raider 2013, best adventure game of the year
by George N Quentin
Tomb raider 2013 underwent many changes from the previous titles but more significantly
as you wouldn’t imagine a brand new Lara Croft is born. From Tomb raider Anniversary
(2007), underworld (2008), then boom, she’s back, the baddest girl on the planet is back,
fresh, younger, hungry, ruthless in what’s to be an exhilarating action adventure. It’s just
outstanding, brilliant work from Crystal Dynamics.
The game brings a fresh new take on the Tomb Raider series as the player takes control of
the new reconstructed, Lara Croft.
Prepare to be amazed with the countless amounts of the challenges she encounters, the
outnumbered amount of enemies she slaughters, yet alone the way she overcome the most
dangerous life threatening moments you can ever imagine, her ability to strive and survive
in certainly the most vicious of places is just inspiring.
She’s just the ultimate adventurer, the tomb raider, the explorer of the underworld and the
exterminator of evil. On a cruise mission to explore the one of the creepiest island known to
man, “the Dragon’s triangle” known to possess evil spirits and constraining any living being
within and away from the island.
New Lara croft
Publisher: Square Enix
Developers: Crystal Dynamics,
Eidos Montreal (multiplayer)
Rating: 18+
Genre: Action, Adventure
Platform : PS3, Xbox 360, PC
2. Lara mission starts in doubts as a result of an unforeseen crash on the island, watched
ashore, ship destroyed, friends missing, breathless, hungry and clueless of her environment.
Her extraordinary adventure sets off, in what’s to be an explosive action thriller, a challenge
to rescue her friends and a battle against evil to flee from the island.
The new Lara is much younger than her predecessors, bringing a fresh intake to the game
that just refined the series setting it off for a promising sequel. She’s much more inspiring
than her predecessors from the series, more brave, with a non quitting attitude and
willingness to survive, push on and overcome her enemies. She’s just aspire-ring to watch
and play with, you can just feels her frustration and pain throughout her adventure while
uncovering how she learns her crafts been a croft, best known to have skill-set to diminish
any being in the planet, having that ability to survive and make her way around any sort of
environment, utilizing gears while specialising with many sort of weaponries that you can
think of to overcome anything that’s in her way.
Although she wasn’t much of a badass like the preceding characters best known for blasting
enemies away with double hand guns, She however got more comfy, less worried and
believed in herself and abilities that she can utilize her skill-set to climb walls using her axe,
jump between platforms, sneaking around buildings and reservoirs, coasting down
waterfalls, rope running between platforms and using her survival instinct to find paths
making her ways around her surroundings.
As she progresses she’s develops from a scared young girl to a much determined, relentless
adventurer with a non quitting attitude to progress, find her friends and find a way out of
the island. As the old man Roth kept repeating and encouraging her to believe in what she
is, “been a croft”. She became more of a threat to her enemies showing the deadliest side of
Lara taking a leap toward ladder
3. her using her handgun, crossbow, shotguns, grenade launcher and rifle to diminish anyone
on her way. She also shows the clever side of her, using her weapons to her advantage to
make her way around her environment like the shotgun and grenade launcher which she
uses to blast through doors or equipments, using her axe to open doors and killing enemies
while also scrolling around with the crossbow rope. All of which makes an unforeseen and
unpredictable adventure that you will ever witness.
The game is well balanced with great stability. You hardly have to complain about anything,
the controls were intact, the graphics is outstanding with marvellous display and gameplay
is flawless filled with drama and action all the way. The game is at a good difficulty setting
that does a lot of thinking for you and helps you play with ease, like slowing down scenes in
slow motion for you to correctly click a certain button. These helps you play with easy and
enjoy the adventure comfortably. It also does some basic elements for you like lighting up a
torch as you approach dark areas, or automatically duck, hide and takes cover as Lara spots
an enemy nearby.
The game brings a mixture of fascinating die hard actions, more like the diehard series
comprised with Indiana Jones specialities filled with epic, jaw dropping action. In
comparison, Tomb Raider 2013 is more like an uncharted game due to the vast amount of
speed runs and action taking place. Furthermore the game offers a healthy amount of open
world exploration, sort of like Assassins Creed as your killing animals, using a crossbow to
make your way around the environment. Most of all the ability to explore tombs, ongoing
multiple side quests and revisiting places are the main similarities in both games but more
explicitly in Tomb Raider, Lara is a raider, built for discovery and adventure with an
enthusiasm for finding treasures, analysing them to understand her surrounding, by
exploring the island you also gain XP and salvage for all your findings like ancient scrolls,
dairies and much more which in turns give you points and weapon upgrades to make Lara
more Powerful as well as helping her understand her environment and prepare for what’s
ahead. These all make an extraordinary campaign that bound to grasp you all the way to
end.
Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception Gameplay Tomb Raider Gameplay
4. There is more to it that would grasp your attention. You would barely blink which is why it’s
undoubtedly the best action adventure of the year so far. The rebirth of the adventure, the
story and the new Lara croft made it such a success and for the first time its playable in
multiplayer allowing you to play several different game modes in several different maps. it’s
definitely something to look forward to from the Canadian developer ‘Eidos Montreal’ in the
next series as to how they would refurnish it and make it better or even distinct from other
titles like Uncharted.
Tomb Raider 2013 definitely sets the standards for action adventure genre and remarkably
outclassed all previous releases of the title, adding changes and bringing an inspiring new
look to the leading character ‘Camilla Luddington’ as Lara Croft. This is definitely something
called “work of a genius”, bringing the rebirth of the franchise in extraordinary fashion.
There much to be excited about the game and if you love exploratory, adventurous games
mixed with action, stealth play and side quests, then this is the game f the year for you.
