Introduction
This technical service report has been provided by Wisconsin Main Street in conjunction with Main Street Tomahawk,
Downtown Professionals Network, and Arnett Muldrow & Associates. A two-day workshop was held on March 28-29,
2012, during which a committee of community stakeholders worked with the consultant team to develop a draft version
of the wayfinding system contained in this report. Over the following three weeks, the system was revised and the final
system is detailed in this document.
System Characteristics
The wayfinding system outlined in this report contains a sign typology which is explained below:
Gateways
Gateway signs welcome residents and visitors to the community. These signs also establish the outer boundaries of the
wayfinding system.
Trailblazers
The majority of signs outlined in this system are trailblazers, which may feature one-to-three community destinations
as well as directional arrows that correspond to these destinations. These signs feature lettering with a cap height of
either four or six inches, depending upon the speed zone where the sign is to be place. (In speed zones 30 MPH and
below, cap height should be four inches. Otherwise, a six-inch cap height is required.)
Parking
All municipal parking lots should be clearly signed. Parking signs should share typeface and branding elements with
other system components.
Kiosks
A well-designed kiosk will provide a comprehensive range of local information for both the resident and visitor. Most
kiosks will include a large area map as well as printed collateral featuring local attractions and/or fold-out maps.
Specialty Signage
These signs denote districts (ex., “South Tomahawk Avenue District”) and other features (ex., “A Wisconsin Main
Street Community”). Such signage should be deployed sparingly and in accordance with strategic goals, such as the
promotion of special events.

Renderings
All sign drawings in this document are conceptual only. It is the responsibility of the Client to ensure the compliance of all elements
of the signs with all federal and state regulations. Placement of signs is also subject to WIDOT approval and must comply with all
applicable federal and state codes.
Codes and Regulations
All recommendations in this document are subject to the regulations and codes enumerated in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices (2008 ed.) as well as WIDOT addenda to the federal document. All recommendations in this report are subject to WIDOT
approval. All sign copy will be Clearview Highway or equivalent FHWA/AASHTO-approved typeface. The final size and placement
of sign copy is subject to WIDOT approval. The types, size, and placement of arrows and other directional features will comply with
MUTCD standards. All installed signs will meet federal and state requirements for minimum height and breakaway features.
Project Phasing
The wayfinding system is divided into two phases, primarily based upon a future streetscaping project for Somo Avenue.
