Edo city
Before the 10th century, there is no mention
of Edo in historical records, but for a few
settlements in the area. Edo first appears in
the Azuma Kagami chronicles, that name for
the area being probably used since the second
half of the Heian period. Its development
started in late 11th century with a branch of
the Kanmu-Taira clan (桓武平氏) called the
Chichibu clan (秩父氏), coming from the
banks of the then-Iruma River, present day
upstream of Arakawa river. A descendant of
the head of the Chichibu clan settled in the
area and took the name Edo Shigetsugu (江戸
重継), likely based on the name used for the
place, and founded the Edo clan. Shigetsugu
built a fortified residence, probably around
the tip of the Musashino terrace, which would
become the Edo castle. Shigetsugu's son, Edo
Shigenaga (江戸重長), took the Taira's side
against Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1180 but
eventually surrendered to Minamoto and
became a gokenin for the Kamakura
shogunate. At the fall of the shogunate in the
14th century, the Edo clan took the side of the
Southern court, and its influence declined
during the Muromachi period.

Cherry Blossom
From late March to early April, Tokyo
transforms as cherry blossom fever grips
the city. This year, warmer weather looks
set to bring the dates forward, with
flowering set to begin earlier than usual.
We introduce the latest 2021 forecast and
the best spots to enjoy these beautiful
symbols of spring.
Cherry blossom – or sakura - season in
Tokyo is truly a magical experience.
Thousands of trees burst into bloom,
dousing the streets with stunning shades of
pink. The flowers are a national obsession
and people flock to parks to hold hanami
parties and picnics to view and photograph
them. Stores will stock their shelves with
sakura-themed or flavored items, such as
sakura bento lunch boxes and even serve
pink sakura drinks. As if shaking off the
winter, a bright and optimistic atmosphere
fills the city.

Shibuya
Crossing
Shibuya Scramble Crossing (渋谷ス
クランブル交差点, Shibuya
sukuranburu kōsaten) or commonly
known as Shibuya Crossing is a
popular scramble crossing in
Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.[1] It is
located in front of the Shibuya
Station Hachikō exit and stops
vehicles in all directions to allow
pedestrians to inundate the entire
intersection. The statue of Hachikō,
between the station and the
intersection, is a common meeting
place and almost always crowded.
AKADEMIA WSB
The crossing was inaugurated in
1973.
The crossing was featured in the
2016 Summer Olympics closing
ceremony to promote the 2020
Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Since the late 2010s it has become a
popular place for young people to
gather at Halloween, some in
cosplay costumes. Increasingly large
and chaotic crowds led in 2019 to
Shibuya Ward adopting an
ordinance banning alcohol
consumption in the area at the end
of October.

First thing came to mind of
most people it is ANIME
Let’s know about anime and why is so popular?
AKADEMIA WSB
Why anime is
popular?
Anime and manga have long been at the heart
of Japanese culture, with a consistent wave of
popularity between the generations. Over
recent years, the popularity for anime and its
comic strip counterpart manga has grown
considerably in the UK and the West.
One of the main reasons why anime has stood
the test of time and grown in popularity across
the world is due to its unique ability to grow
with its viewers. The famous anime expert,
Takamasa Sakurai, claims that the genre has
been widely accepted due to its
unconventional nature, “Japanese anime broke
the convention that anime is something that
kids watch”. Overseas fans of anime claim that
they enjoy the intensity of the storylines with
the endings being difficult to predict as anime
is often targeted at adult audiences. AKADEMIA WSB
