Sending an e-mail thank you note to a potential employer following an interview is a great way to leave a lasting impression and
ensure you stay top-of-mind as he or she makes the hiring decision. However, there are several key factors to consider when drafting
a thank you note:
1. Don’t sell yourself again. You’ve already either won them over or done all the damage you can do in the interview. There’s no
sense in trying to sell your qualities or experience to them again via e-mail.
2. Keep it short and concise. A simple thank you note that thanks him or her for their time and expresses your interest and/or
excitement for the position will suffice.
3. Redirect the focus on the e-mail recipient. Use “you” more often than “I” whenever possible. For instance, I would say, “Great
meeting with you,” rather than, “I enjoyed meeting with you.”
I’ve composed an example thank you note below based on these three key rules:
Dear, NAME,
Thank you for your time. COMPANY NAME is highly impressive for its leadership, values and company culture. Excited about the
opportunity and look forward to next steps.
Regards,
NAME
In this example, I’ve completely avoided using the pronoun “I”, which, while this may cause grammatical errors, makes the e-mail
focus more on what the recipient and the company has to offer versus the candidates. It’s also very short and to the point and avoids
rehashing details you already discussed during the interview.
In today’s busy business world, it’s easy for people to forget to send a thank you note after an interview. However, the gesture will be
greatly appreciated and if written well and concisely will give you a leg up on the competition for the position for which you’re applying.
