TIPS FOR SCUBA
DIVING SAFETY
By Jacob Newberger
Introduction
 Jacob Newberger has functioned as an automation
validation engineer with Panacea Technologies, Inc.,
in Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania, since 2011. Beyond
his professional responsibilities Jacob Newberger
enjoys staying physically active through skiing and
scuba diving.
To achieve certification as a scuba diver, individuals
must meet all PADI requirements. Although the
certification process spends a considerable amount of
time emphasizing proper safety protocol during a dive,
there are a few tips divers should remind themselves
of at all times to increase the chances of an enjoyable,
safe dive.
Scuba Diving Safety
 The one dive rule that should be held above all
others is to never dive alone. Diving in groups
is advisable, but even in this scenario,
individuals can drift from the group. Using a
buddy system stands as the most effective
method of diver safety, both in and out of
water. For example, checking one’s gear is
another critical component of diver safety.
While a diver should carefully check their own
gear prior to getting into the water, they should
exchange gear with a dive partner for a
thorough double check.
Conclusion
 Finally, divers must remind themselves never to
hold their breath during a dive. Whether water
conditions have started to deteriorate, a
potentially dangerous marine animal has entered
the dive area, or a diver has simply become struck
by the natural beauty of their surroundings, he or
she must maintain a normal breathing pattern. Air
expands in the lungs during descent and contracts
during the ascent, two non-issues for divers who
continue to breathe at a regular rate. Divers who
forget to breath can do serious damage to their
lungs and other parts of the body.
