Molecules are the smallest particles that make up a pure substance, having the same properties everywhere. A pure substance only contains one component, while a mixture contains more than one with varying properties. Mixtures can be either homogeneous, with consistent properties throughout, or heterogeneous, where the properties are not uniform.
