God reveals exciting truths about His nature through the pages of the Old Testament. We can discover many spiritual gems by knowing the story of the Old Testament and how the various books of the Bible fit into that story. John Beene taught an Overview of the Old Testament at the November 20, 2011 congregational worship. The class included timelines, pictures, and maps to help the scriptures come to life. Listen to the lessons, view the Power Point presentation, and use the Old Testament Timelines to further your own study of God's story in the Old Testament.
I used to teach a simple Old Testament introduction using some ideas from Melton Short's book, The OT made simple. Recently I found the notes and thought if you are not familiar with the OT storyline you might find this a useful quick introduction.
The document provides an overview of the Old Testament, including its origins, themes, divisions, and history. Some key points covered are:
- The OT is the primary collection of writings of the Jewish people and is recognized as scripture by both Judaism and Christianity.
- Major themes include God as the creator, God revealing himself to mankind, and God seeking a relationship with mankind to help him reach his potential.
- The OT can be studied as great literature, as a historical work, and as a book of religious faith. It contains historical narratives, law codes, wisdom literature, and prophets.
- The history spans from the beginnings with Abraham, to the kingdoms of Israel and
1. Genesis describes the creation of the world, the fall of man, Noah's ark, and God's calling of Abraham. 2. Exodus details Moses freeing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and receiving the 10 Commandments from God. 3. Joshua leads the Israelites in conquering the Promised Land, as described in the book of Joshua.
1) The document outlines the major events and time periods of Old Testament history from 2000 BC to 0 AD.
2) It shows the time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, followed by the Israelites entering Canaan and the Exodus from Egypt during the rule of judges and early monarchy under Saul, David, and Solomon.
3) It then indicates the division of Israel into northern and southern kingdoms, the destruction of the northern kingdom in 722 BC, and the exile of the southern kingdom of Judah to Babylon from 597-538 BC before the period of Roman rule.
The document discusses Jesus' master plan of evangelism, which was to train disciples who would reproduce and multiply by making more disciples. Jesus expected the disciples to bear spiritual fruit that would last, and taught them the principle of reproduction. If the disciples faithfully followed this plan, the Gospel would spread to all parts of the world. The test was whether the disciples would continue Jesus' work after he was gone by imparting his spirit and methods to others. The Great Commission centered around making disciples who would then make more disciples. The early church proved Jesus' plan could work, but later the church lost focus on developing leaders and reproducing disciples. For evangelism to be effective, it requires committed people yielded to God's spirit,
The document discusses the divisions and organization of the Bible. It notes that the Bible is divided into the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament contains 39 books divided into 4 groups - Law, History, Poetry, and Prophecy. The New Testament contains 27 books divided into 4 groups - Gospels, History, Letters, and Prophecy. Understanding these divisions provides a framework and roadmap for navigating and comprehending the entire Bible.

Session 01 Old Testament Overview - Promises MadeJohn Brooks
Old Testament Overview
Introduction to the Old Testament
"Promises Made"
Based on material from:
Capitol Hill Baptist Church
525 A Street, NE
Washington, DC 20002
The document provides an overview of the 66 books of the Bible, divided into the Old Testament (39 books) and New Testament (27 books). It summarizes the five books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) which describe God creating humanity, delivering the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, and establishing a covenant with them at Mount Sinai.
The document summarizes the compilation and translation of the Christian Bible over time. It begins with the Ten Commandments being delivered to Moses in 1400 BC. The Old Testament books were completed by 500 BC and the New Testament books by AD 100. The canon of the New Testament was established in AD 315. The Bible was translated into many languages over the centuries, with the first English translation being produced by John Wycliffe in 1382. The King James Version was first published in 1611, and many modern translations have been produced since the 1970s.
God chooses Abraham through whom to send the Messiah. Abraham is a man of faith who God promises to make into a great nation and through whom all nations will be blessed. Key figures like Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Melchizedek prefigure aspects of Christ. The book of Genesis establishes major themes of the Bible - creation, the fall of man, God's plan for salvation, and his choosing of Israel as the people through whom the Messiah will come.

Suzanne Lagerweij - Influence Without Power - Why Empathy is Your Best Friend...Suzanne Lagerweij
This is a workshop about communication and collaboration. We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2).
This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
Come learn more on how to become a real influencer!

Career goals serve as a roadmap for individuals, guiding them toward achieving long-term professional aspirations and personal fulfillment. Establishing clear career goals enables professionals to focus their efforts on developing specific skills, gaining relevant experience, and making strategic decisions that align with their desired career trajectory. By setting both short-term and long-term objectives, individuals can systematically track their progress, make necessary adjustments, and stay motivated. Short-term goals often include acquiring new qualifications, mastering particular competencies, or securing a specific role, while long-term goals might encompass reaching executive positions, becoming industry experts, or launching entrepreneurial ventures.
Moreover, having well-defined career goals fosters a sense of purpose and direction, enhancing job satisfaction and overall productivity. It encourages continuous learning and adaptation, as professionals remain attuned to industry trends and evolving job market demands. Career goals also facilitate better time management and resource allocation, as individuals prioritize tasks and opportunities that advance their professional growth. In addition, articulating career goals can aid in networking and mentorship, as it allows individuals to communicate their aspirations clearly to potential mentors, colleagues, and employers, thereby opening doors to valuable guidance and support. Ultimately, career goals are integral to personal and professional development, driving individuals toward sustained success and fulfillment in their chosen fields.
