Dan Sarewitz: Everything You Know About the Future is WrongCreative Nonfiction
The document discusses emerging technologies and their potential impacts, both positive and negative. It notes that while some experts in 2002 predicted technologies could improve human life, others now warn of risks from technologies like autonomous weapons without proper guidelines. The document also reflects on how the future is difficult to predict and past innovations like the steam engine were nearly impossible to foresee in their full implications and transformations.
Johann Heinrich Schulz discovered that silver nitrate could capture images when exposed to light, paving the way for the first photographs. Joseph Niepce took the first photo with a camera obscura in 1826, though the 8 hour exposure time and image fading were problematic. Louis Daguerre later invented the daguerreotype process, requiring only 30 minutes of exposure without image fading. Advances like the calotype, collodion process, and dry plates reduced exposure times further and allowed photographs to be developed later or in different locations. These innovations led to technologies like roll film cameras, instant cameras, and digital cameras that made photography widely accessible to the public.
The document provides a history of photography from its origins in the 1700s to modern developments, discusses how images are processed neurologically and used in news media, and offers tips on techniques photographers can use when taking images, such as applying the rule of thirds and considering lighting, depth of field, and shot construction. It also addresses issues of truth, ethics, and copyright when working with images.
For the most time of human history, life was local and linear. Local in the way that anything that happened was close by, a least within a walking distance. Linear in the way that your life was the same as your father and your childs. Nothing changed.
Just like the evolution of man, technology improvements follow an evolutionary progress. New ideas or products are to begin with immature and fragile with slow improvements. Then the progress accelerates until the products become mature and taken for granted. Then the cycle repeats and a new layer of technology is added to the previous. This process is exponential. One such observation of exponential is Moore’s Law.
Any new technology that gets wide acceptance in society needs to be adopted by people. We will explore that type of people are the first to adopt new things, and what types come later.

A photograph is created when light hits a light sensitive surface, such as silver halide coated on film or an electronic sensor. The first camera was a pinhole camera, which created an inverted image on the opposite side from the hole that light passed through. Nicéphore Niépce added asphalt-coated plates to create the first permanent photograph in 1826. Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, photography became more popular and portable, being used to document both World Wars. Modern digital cameras use electronic sensors instead of film and have millions more pixels than early digital cameras from the 1990s.
Francisco de Goya was a prominent Spanish painter during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was considered one of the most important artists in Spain during this time period and one of the most successful painters in Europe. His style changed dramatically over his career, from paintings of the Spanish Royal family in a Romantic style to darker works influenced by his deafness and the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars. Goya documented the Spanish people's suffering during this time through prints and paintings that were a dramatic shift from his earlier, more classical works.
The document summarizes some key events from the 2000s decade. It discusses the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. It also mentions Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva becoming the first Brazilian worker elected president in 2002. Saddam Hussein was deposed as Iraqi dictator in 2003, condemned to death and executed by hanging in 2006. Pope Benedict XVI was elected leader of the Catholic Church in 2005. Brazil won the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

"Rethinking Kållered │ From Big Box to a Reuse Hub: A Transformation Journey Toward Sustainability"
The booklet of my master’s thesis at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. (Gothenburg, Sweden)
This thesis explores the transformation of the vacated (2023) IKEA store in Kållered, Sweden, into a "Reuse Hub" addressing various user types. The project aims to create a model for circular and sustainable economic practices that promote resource efficiency, waste reduction, and a shift in societal overconsumption patterns.
Reuse, though crucial in the circular economy, is one of the least studied areas. Most materials with reuse potential, especially in the construction sector, are recycled (downcycled), causing a greater loss of resources and energy. My project addresses barriers to reuse, such as difficult access to materials, storage, and logistics issues.
Aims:
• Enhancing Access to Reclaimed Materials: Creating a hub for reclaimed construction materials for both institutional and individual needs.
• Promoting Circular Economy: Showcasing the potential and variety of reusable materials and how they can drive a circular economy.
• Fostering Community Engagement: Developing spaces for social interaction around reuse-focused stores and workshops.
• Raising Awareness: Transforming a former consumerist symbol into a center for circular practices.
Highlights:
• The project emphasizes cross-sector collaboration with producers and wholesalers to repurpose surplus materials before they enter the recycling phase.
• This project can serve as a prototype for reusing many idle commercial buildings in different scales and sizes.
• The findings indicate that transforming large vacant properties can support sustainable practices and present an economically attractive business model with high social returns at the same time.
• It highlights the potential of how sustainable practices in the construction sector can drive societal change.
