A presentation held 16.5.2024 in Helsinki at the policy dialogue meeting between Finland and the WHO European Region. The mental health future in Finland does not look bright. Austerity measures 2025-28 will reduce benefits, increase poverty and result in financial distress in families. Reduced access to primary health care (statutory maximum waiting time increases from two weeks to three months) and increased availability of alcohol (lowered taxes and weakening of the alcohol sales monopoly) will add to the burden. In addition, government financial support to health and social care CSOs will be reduced by 34 %. As a result of the above, population mental health is facing major challenges.

On May 16, the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) and its program affiliate RPO America held a virtual peer exchange focused on rural transportation planning programs. Speakers included Krishna Kunapareddy (NADO), Chris Whitaker (Region XII Council of Governments), and Jennifer O'Connor (Northern Arizona Council of Governments). Learning objectives included: * Understanding how RPOs work across the country, including common planning and program responsibilities and unique tasks customized for local conditions * Identify common regional planning organization roles to support local transportation planning and implementation needs. * Identify common regional organization roles conducted in support of statewide transportation planning, such as long-range plans, short-range capital programs, and modal plans.

On March 31, 2023 the US National Pork Board validated a study by Todd Williams, of Pipestone Veterinary Services, based on the use of high expansion nitrogen foam for the large-scale depopulation of all classes of swine, utilizing Livetec Systems Nitrogen Foam Delivery System (NFDS). The high expansion foam produced by the Livetec Systems NFDS surrounds the animal in large bubbles filled with nitrogen with a base expansion ration of between 300 and 350 to 1, as mentioned on the information provided by the producer of the firefighting foam. The Livetec technology, based on using Compressed Air Foam (CAF) filled with nitrogen instead of air for depopulating pigs, emerges within a critical landscape. The complexities of implementing effective emergency depopulation strategies for livestock, particularly swine, present multifaceted challenges. Livetec's approach relies on high expansion firefighting foam, aiming to euthanize pigs by submerging them in foam. The Livetec system's claims about the effectiveness of nitrogen-filled high expansion foam for depopulating market pigs lack substantial evidence upon analysis. The discrepancy between the actual foam produced during field trials and the promised high expansion foam, coupled with the absence of concrete proof supporting the method's efficacy, discredits the technology's claims.

The path to achieving quality UHC and realizing the economic and social benefits that entails, are intricately linked to the empowerment and expansion of the nursing workforce. By prioritizing investments in nursing, societies can make significant strides towards a healthier, more prosperous global community. This IND report provides numerous economic arguments by leading experts that can be summed up in the following four key themes that continue to build on each other: 1. Creating decent jobs to contribute to societal good. 2. Building the workforce to achieve UHC. 3. Optimizing the use of resources to improve health system effectiveness and efficiency. 4. Investing in health for economic and social prosperity

Nurses provide care and leadership to address global health challenges everywhere, often at great personal risk. They are the essential life force for health, yet our healthcare systems worldwide have fallen short and failed to value, protect, respect and invest in this precious resource. The world has mistakenly taken nurses for granted, treating them as an invisible and inexhaustible resource. That must now stop for the sake of nurses and global health. Nurses are key to healthier communities, responsive societies, thriving economies and powerful nations. Now is the time for policy makers, national and local decision-makers to take decisive steps to build and optimise an enduring, strong and sustainable nursing workforce. The International Council of Nurses’ Charter for Change presents 10 policy actions that governments and employers must take to create and sustain health care systems that are safe, affordable, accessible, and responsive and shift nurses from being invisible to invaluable

This is the full Rocky Mount | Wilson | Greenville Regional Transit Plan 2023. UCPCOG Executive Director Robert Hiett advocated for funding for this study to assess current conditions, and for it to recommend actions and strategies to prepare for future growth and development for the region. The study provides a great deal of detail, and local governments can use it to plan future service expansion and funding requests.

The most prominent environmental harm caused by wildlife crime and related illegal wildlife trade is degradation of the world’s biological diversity through overexploitation, resulting in population reduction and extinction threats to wild species. Species diversity is a critical aspect of the functioning ecosystems that support all life on earth. The threat of species overexploitation was identified as the second most significant driver of global biodiversity loss after landuse change by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Concern about overexploitation motivates much of the national legislation affecting wildlife trade worldwide and it is the rationale for the international trade regulation measures now subscribed to by 184 states that are contracting Parties to CITES.

IEA publication, May 2024 Critical minerals, which are essential for a range of clean energy technologies, have risen up the policy agenda in recent years due to increasing demand, volatile price movements, supply chain bottlenecks and geopolitical concerns. The dynamic nature of the market necessitates greater transparency and reliable information to facilitate informed decision-making, as underscored by the request from Group of Seven (G7) ministers for the IEA to produce medium- and long-term outlooks for critical minerals. The Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2024 follows the IEA’s inaugural review of the market last year. It provides a snapshot of industry developments in 2023 and early 2024 and offers medium- and long-term outlooks for the demand and supply of key energy transition minerals based on the latest technology and policy trends. The report also assesses key risks to the reliability, sustainability and diversity of critical mineral supply chains and analyses the consequences for policy and industry stakeholders. It will be accompanied by an updated version of the Critical Minerals Data Explorer, an interactive online tool that allows users to explore the latest IEA projections.

Water is critical for meeting commitments of the Paris Agreement and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Our economies rely on water, with recent estimates putting the economic value of water and freshwater ecosystems at USD 58 trillion - equivalent to 60% of global GDP. At the same time, water related risks are increasing in frequency and scale in the context of climate change. How are investments shaping our economies and societies exposure to water risk? What role can the financial system play in supporting water security? And how can increased understanding of how finance both impacts and depends on water resources spur action towards greater water security? This OECD Green Talks LIVE on Tuesday 14 May 2024 from 15:00 to 16:00 CEST discussed the evolving landscape for assessing water risks to the financial system. OECD Policy Analyst Lylah Davies presented key findings and recommendations from recent OECD work on assessing the financial materiality of water-related risks, including the recently published paper “Watered down? Investigating the financial materiality of water-related risks” and was joined by experts to discuss relevant initiatives underway.
