Adding to the Maxton experi-
ence was the rest of the YSSR team
and supporters showing us North-
erners what Southern hospitality
really means. They pitched tents to
protect everyone from the midday
heat, provided coolers filled with just
about any beverage you could think
of, and set up grills to cook some of
the best barbecue we’ve ever tasted!
If it weren’t for Darren and Dawn
Cronan and some of the others, we’d
all have been frying in the hot sun,
thirsty as hell, and starving to death.
The racetrack is actually a two-
mile-long abandoned airstrip adja-
cent to the Laurinburg/Maxton
Airport, and there are no vendor
facilities on site. This open and wel-
coming attitude carries over to many
of the race teams at Maxton. Rather
than the cutthroat competition often
found between racers, there is a
camaraderie among racers and their
crews that made the whole weekend
one of the most enjoyable spectacles
I’ve ever experienced. If a team
needs a part, a wrench, or another
set of eyes to help diagnose a prob-
lem, more often than not, the team
in the next pit is more than willing
to lend a hand.
According to Crim, the Sports-
ter List Race Team will be compet-
ing at the World of Speed again
in September of this year at the
Bonneville Salt Flats. Along with
SNART, the List Race Team will
also be running at Maxton several
more times this year, and will be
looking to end the 2002 season
with Roadkill taking Top Point
Leader at Maxton. Not bad for a
guy whose dad wouldn’t let him
race as a youngster.
It was quite an experience to
watch owners, riders, Sportster List
members, and sponsors come
together at Maxton from all over
North America. Owners and riders
hail from Kansas, North and South
Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia,
California, and Florida. Supporters
rode or drove in from those states,
as well as other locations like New
Jersey, Arizona, and even Canada.
If you’re interested in speed tri-
als, or just watching what these
bikes can do, Maxton is the place to
be. Even if you’ve never seen a
motorcycle race, take my word for it,
one weekend at Maxton is all it takes
to be hooked.
