Three60 Energy Article - part 2
1. As soon as the second energy session started it was quite clear that Asif and Waafa had been
conferring. They had obviously trawled the web before identifying that in their opinion Society must
take the lead and the responsibility, simply because Society is the foremost user of energy. They
argued that it didn’t matter whether energy was derived from nuclear, coal and oil power stations, only
that if Society demanded energy, then energy is produced.
Waafa flashed a slide onto the projector screen that stated “to achieve sustainability Society must find and execute
solutions that are acceptable and viable” She emphasised the words by standing afore the screen and expressing
forcefully that not until Society accepted the challenge, and that innovative and efficient solutions were introduced would it
be possible to maintain a sustainable Society.
Imad applauded Waafa’s passion before asking the team to quantify “sustainability”. Todd eager to participate immediately
responded by expounding that to his mind sustainability when defined meant that it represented something that cannot
end, something that will last, but more importantly for the present debate he accentuated that sustainability is a system
and / or process that will not use up or destroy natural resources. The gathering considered his statement; Valentina was
the first to speak by asking Todd how he would quantify sustainability. After a few moments he replied by saying that he
couldn’t, not yet, confirming he may never realise a situation where he would fully understand; however, for now he thought
the team should explore both renewable and environmental friendly energies. He completed his statement by adding that
he agreed with Asif and Waafa that Society must take the lead and that Society has to work with and understand the
advances being accomplished in the worlds of science and technology.

Valentina, summing-up the session’s discussion so far expressed that before the team could reach any conclusions that in
the first instance it had to identify what the forces, of which she suspected there were many, were necessary to quantifying
sustainability. She stopped for a moment before adding that in reality sustainability is a name, a term given to encompass
all the relevant forces. Imad asked the team if they were satisfied with progress. Asif, in his quiet but authoritative voice,
responded, pointing out that it was possible that the team had taken on something they would not, or indeed, could not
conclude. He exclaimed strongly that the subject matter was too large and that discussion could go on for an eternity. Imad
interjected by asking what analytical tools are available an in-depth assessment of sustainability.
He answered his own question saying “we can monitor and we can measure”. Todd caught on to Imad’s thought process
augmenting Imad that energy and sustainability were both risk averse, risks which included reliability, resilience and
vulnerability. Imad asked the team, prior to the next session, to consider natural, social, and economic issues in the
context of water quality and land use, infrastructure and health. He stressed that the discussions were proving very
interesting and providing food for thought which had harmonised the team, but of paramount importance was the fact that
it was clear that all were concerned, highlighting that sustainability needed exploring.
