The document discusses different examples of when nonviolent protest has been effective and ineffective at creating change. It analyzes cases like Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma and Martin Luther King Jr. in the U.S. civil rights movement, where nonviolence successfully led to reforms. However, it also examines instances like John Brown's abolitionist actions and the Tiananmen Square protests, where nonviolent methods failed and more forceful measures were necessary to achieve goals or prevent movements from collapsing. The document concludes that while nonviolence can be a powerful tool, protestors must be willing to consider other approaches depending on the circumstances to fully overcome injustice.

Machine Learning and Deep Learning Applied to Real Time with Apache Kafka Str...confluent
This document discusses applying machine learning models to real-time stream processing using Apache Kafka. It covers building analytic models from historical data, applying those models to real-time streams without redevelopment, and techniques for online training of models. Live demos are presented using open source tools like Kafka Streams, Kafka Connect, and H2O to apply machine learning to streaming use cases like flight delay prediction. The key takeaway is that streaming platforms can leverage pre-built machine learning models to power real-time analytics and actions.

Nearly 1.2 million people die in road crashes each year (WHO - 2015) with additional millions becoming injured or disabled. One big part of this problem is worst road traffic conditions and unless action is taken, road traffic injuries are predicted to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. Moreover, although road traffic injuries have been a major cause of mortality for many years, most traffic accidents are both predictable and preventable. In this talk, we want to demonstrate a scalable IoT platform that uses weather data and data from other cars to warn drivers of dangerous conditions. We will show how CF can help to save human lives and the architecture behind this. Additionally, we will also explain the data science that is involved.

NASA's Nebula cloud computing platform began in 2009 as an internal project to provide on-demand computing resources for NASA researchers and reduce costs associated with underutilized servers. It was later open sourced along with Rackspace to form OpenStack, one of the first platforms built by the US government for cloud computing. Today Nebula provides cloud services across multiple NASA centers and continues to work on expanding access and capabilities to better support NASA's missions and research goals into the future.
Data science apps powered by Jupyter NotebooksNatalino Busa
Jupyter notebooks are transforming the way we look at computing, coding, and science. But is this the only "data scientist experience" that this technology can provide? In this presentation we will look at how to create interactive web applications for data exploration and machine learning. In the background this code is still powered by the well-understood and well-documented Jupyter Notebooks.

2 December Usman Haque gave the closing keynote at ThingsCon Amsterdam 2016.
Decision-making and design are central to the production of technologies in networked urban environments, but it’s important to understand how definitions of efficiency, optimisation, etc, that often underpin such processes, especially in so-called ‘smart cities’ help determine how and why things are implemented and with whom and where power concentrates. The questions of who designs and who decides (data, technologies, actions), as well as how we collectively make designs and decisions about the future are crucial. This talk will discuss these issues in the context of some of Usman’s work in the internet of things.
At ThingsCon Amsterdam one of the in-depth sessions was organised around the theme of Smart Citizens. The smart city is often approached from the city level, with optimisation as driver. What if we take the citizen as starting point, and how to build a society in the city if everything becomes smart. What is role of the things of the city?
Usman Haque is one of the speakers and panellists in the session.
This document discusses the future of conversational interfaces and outlines several potential applications and outcomes. It begins with a brief history of messaging interfaces for children and the realization that messaging is an intuitive platform. It then lists several potential areas where conversational interfaces could be applied, including enterprise automation, gaming, marketing automation, digital companions, and more. It raises questions about how this technology might impact users, companies, and designers in the future. In closing, it thanks the audience and invites questions.
