The Stanley Hotel was founded by twin brothers Francis and Freelan Stanley, who also created the Stanley Steamer. Several areas of the hotel, including rooms 217, 401, 418, and 1302 as well as the concert hall and theater, are said to be haunted with reports of shadows and figures. Stephen King was inspired by room 217 to write his novel The Shining, which was later made into a film set at the Stanley Hotel.
