Hello, I'm Katy Duke, The Thermal Blind Company. I trained as an architect in the early eighties. In 1985 was working at Feilden Clegg on super-insulated houses in Milton Keynes. Bill Gething & I were playing around with roller blinds & velcro for a house that was subsequently monitored for a year by Paul Russeyvelt. I didn't know back then that 25 years later I would again be playing around with blinds and velcro, this time with some additional toys which include powerful magnets, Thinsulate and aluminised Mylar film. Once I'd researched & found that there was still no really effective way of insulating, particularly, single glazed windows I had to press on and actually make the thermal blinds I'd designed. So here they are.
They have a core of Thinsulate, wrapped in Mylar, with a polyester fabric to the room side & a chain-driven headrail and when they are down the magnets hold them tight against your window frame. The blinds are going to be incorporated in five of the Retrofit projects being undertaken by Mark Elton at ECD Architects. The first set of blinds are in production. As part of the TSB funded projects they will be tested by the National Physics Lab using their hot-box, so last December I undertook some preliminary tests to try & establish the effectiveness of the blinds. This graph shows the results.The internal temp was 20C externally 2C.The temperature profile through the glass & blind is shown here. The blue line shows the temperature profile without the blind and the red line shows the temperature profile with the blind in place. From these figure a very rough estimate of the U-value has been calculated, which suggests that the for a typical single glazed window at 4.8W/sqmC the U-value is reduced to around 1.8-2 W/sq.mdegC with the blinds in place.
