Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein takes place in the late 1700s in various parts of Europe, especially Switzerland and Germany, and in the Arctic. It was published in 1818 in England during the Romantic literary movement. The novel tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment that he later regrets. It is considered an early example of science fiction. The title refers to Victor Frankenstein, as he is both the "modern Prometheus" who created the creature as well as its "father."

The Urban Context Exegeting Pre Post Riot Los AngelesNaomi Bradley
The document discusses the 1992 Los Angeles riots following the acquittal of police officers in the Rodney King beating case, examining the urban context and theological response. It explores the roots of anger and pain in the black community, the immediate triggers of the unrest, and calls for churches to lead by example in responding to social injustice and healing broken hearts in the aftermath.
The document discusses issues facing urban youth in America, particularly African American youth. It notes that many young African Americans are incarcerated, with high rates of drug abuse, AIDS, and murder being the top cause of death for those aged 15-34. The US has the largest prison population in the world, at 1.8 million inmates, and nearly half are African American despite African Americans only making up around 13% of the total US population. Statistics are provided on juvenile arrests in LA County, with the majority being Hispanic and African American youth. The Justice Department found issues with conditions in LA County Juvenile Halls that violated detainees' constitutional rights.
O documento descreve os principais elementos da ficção gótica, incluindo:
1) A ambientação em castelos antigos e assombrados;
2) Uma atmosfera de mistério e suspense;
3) Uma profecia antiga relacionada ao castelo ou seus habitantes.
The document discusses important factors to consider when choosing a coursebook for teaching English. It explains that the coursebook is one of the few choices teachers have control over. An effective coursebook caters to both the teachers' and students' needs. For teachers, a good coursebook provides structure, materials, ideas and time savings. For students, it offers progression, independence, review and engagement. However, no single coursebook will perfectly suit every teacher and class, so compromises must be made. Teachers should supplement materials as needed and see the coursebook as a partner rather than something that dictates their entire lesson plans.
The document discusses the use of the present perfect tense with "for" and "since" to indicate periods of time. It explains that "since" is used with a point in time to define the starting point of an action, such as "since Monday". It also explains that "for" is used with a duration of time to define how long an action has been occurring, such as "for a week". Examples are provided to illustrate using the present perfect tense with both "for" and "since".
The document discusses the present perfect tense (PPT) in English. It provides examples of its use including to indicate unfinished time periods or actions that began in the past and continue in the present. It also discusses the use of adverbs like already, yet, ever, and never with the present perfect tense. Key uses of PPT covered are indefinite time, unfinished time, experiences, continuous actions, recent actions and lifetime experiences.
The document discusses strategies for teaching English to children. It recommends making lessons fun, using gestures and visuals, encouraging participation, and recycling language through games, songs and stories. Young children learn best through exposure rather than explicit instruction. The document also discusses adapting techniques for very young learners versus older children, developing multiple intelligences, and using activities like TPR, listening, drawing and role plays.
This document examines the statement "there is no best method" in language teaching. It discusses three possible explanations for this statement: 1) Different methods are best for different teaching contexts due to variations in situations and factors. However, determining which contextual factors actually impact methods is complex. 2) All methods contain some truth or validity, suggesting an eclectic approach. But we cannot determine which parts of methods represent truth. 3) The notion of categorizing methods as good or bad is flawed. The author argues the first two explanations are unhelpful and a sustained discussion is needed to clarify the third explanation and understand what it means to say there is no best method.

1. There is no summer

2. There is no summer in juvenile hall.
In fact, your summer may have been interrupted
by an arrest and your first few lonely hours of
realization that you cannot change your past, that
your future has changed forever, that you wish
you hadn’t done it, or that you didn’t do it but
nobody believes you, or that things might have
been different for you if you had lived in a
different place and time.
3. There is no summer in juvenile hall.
No visits from family or friends, or your mom
and/or your dad or your foster mom or granddad
do visit, but not often, or they come often but they
always look sad, and you try not to cry but it
breaks your heart to think that you can’t leave
with them when they go because the youth
correctional officer and the locks and chains on
your wrists and ankles are making sure of that.
5. LA County Juvenile Detention Facilities
3 Juvenile Halls (LA, Downey, Sylmar)
19 Probation Camps
53,830 juvenile arrests (2003)
* 30,697 Hispanic (57%)
* 12,207 Black (23%)
* 8,005 White (15%)
* Male 75%
* 5% <12 years
* 50% ages 16-17
6. Justice Dept. findings, April 2003
LA County Juvenile Halls
We conclude that failure to provide proper
rehabilitation, education, opportunities to
use the telephone and participate in
religious programming, insufficient
provision of translation services for
Limited English Proficient (LEP) youth,
and an ineffective grievance system also
violated residents’ rights under the 14th
Amendment and other applicable laws.
7. March 3 Observations
“We learned that the 250 young men
received 15 minutes a month outside, and
30 minutes of school per day.”
“An idle mind is definitely the devil’s
playground.”

8. March 3 Observations
“These children are so hungry for direction
and truth.”
“If God hears the prayers of anyone, it is
the children.”
