Jesus and the Woman of Samaria
4 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was
making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did
not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again for
Galilee. 4 And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of
Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son
Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey,
was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.[a]
7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a
drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The
Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from
me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to
you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given
you living water.”

11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the
well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our
father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons
and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will
be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will
never be thirsty again.[b] The water that I will give him will become in him a
spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give
me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman
answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying,
‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now
have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to
him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this
mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to
worship.”

21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on
this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship
what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the
Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers
will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people
to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in
spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming
(he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus
said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

We have essentially told him that Jesus would give him
all the things that would enhance his life. Then when
persecution and tribulation comes, he falls away.
When life gets hard, he becomes bitter, casting off the
Savior and consequently resenting those that had told
him the “good news”.

Important things to know…

9. However,
■ if we were to first bring instruction, through the Law
(10 Commandments)
■ explaining how he had violated the Law and sinned
before God, how God looks on sin and how it separates
us from Him,
■ he will accept the Lord with true joy and gladness!
When difficulty comes, he will not cast off the Savior because He didn’t come to the Lord
for life enhancement but to be saved from the wrath to come! Tribulation and
persecution will drive a true believer closer to the Father, clinging tightly to the Savior.

■ He spoke of
something she could
relate to – water.
■ Most of us can strike
up a conversation
with a stranger in the
natural realm. It may
be a friendly, “How
are you?” or a warm
“Good morning”.
If the person responds
with a sense of warm, we
may then ask, “Do you
live around here” or
“Have you been working
here long?” From you
begin to develop a
conversation.

and who it is that asks
you for a drink, you
would have asked him
and he would have given
you living water."
■ What did Jesus do in
the course of their
conversation?
■ He simply mentioned
the things of God.
■ This will take courage.
We may say something like,
“Where do you go to church
on Sundays?” or “Did you
see that report on TV
about…?” If the person
responds positively, bring
out a tract and say
something like this, “Have
you seen one of these?”
When he takes it, simply say,
“It’s a gospel tract” and ask,
“Do you have a Christian
background?”

general terms like
“yes, all have sinned”.
■ Jesus used the Law to
bring her to
consciousness of her
sin
■ He used the Moral
Law.

Use the 10 Commandments to bring about realization and conviction of sin. Although this may look
confrontational but if asked in a spirit of love and gentleness, it won’t be offensive. Remember the
purpose of the 10 Commandments is to Romans 3:20 – expose the guilty of sin

The Eighth Commandment
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
What does this mean? We are to fear and love God, so that we do not tell lies about our neighbors, betray or slander them, or destroy
their reputations. Instead we are to come to their defense, speak well of them, and interpret everything they do in the best possible
light.

“heart” sin to be the same as “behavioral” sin.

If God judges you by the 10 Commandments on Judgment Day, do
you think you will be innocent or guilty?

I don’t believe in hell”
2)He may say he’s
guilty but will still go to
heaven.
3)He may admit he is
guilty and therefore
going to hell.
The conversation can go three ways:

You still have to face God on Judgment
Day whether you believe it or not. Truth will
be truth even if we don’t believe it.
This is usually because the person
thinks God is good and that He will
therefore overlook sin in his case.
Ask him if that concerns him? Tell him if
he values his soul, he must be
concerned about its eternity.

Once the Law has
humbled a person and he
sees the predicament he’s
in, he is ready for grace!
Keep giving the law until
he is humbled. Reveal
grace only when his heart
is bowed.

It is time to reveal the work of the Christ on the Cross.
This is the time to give the Good News.

28. Jesus paid it all!
God sent His Son to suffer and die in our place. Jesus rose from the
dead and defeated death. We broke the Law and Jesus paid our fine.
If we will repent and trust in the Savior, God will forgive us our sins,
pay your fine and dismiss your case.”
