2. Context
• The walking dead is an American zombie
apocalyptic TV series, it is based on a comic
book series but adapted and developed by
Frank Darabont. The series was first
broadcasted on October 31 2010, the most
watched season of TWD is season 5 which
reached an average of 14.38 million views, but
was then overtaken by its last season reaching
an average 7.82 million views. The series
follows a sheriff and a group of people as they
try survive the apocalypse against zombies and
other human threats.
4. Mise en scene
• The costume- The use of a sheriff uniform is ironic because the world went
upside down without police because the dead have taken over, although the
main character Rick might be using the sheriff uniform as a symbol of hope
for his group.
• The setting- The use of different locations symbolise the adventure in this
horror apocalypse. The use of the abandoned gas station symbolises the
extreme conditions the world is in during this series, it also gives the
audience shared feelings of how rick is feeling after waking up to a reality
that couldn’t seem possible.
• Lighting- the lighting throughout the title sequence is low key this creates
suspense and tension for the audience, it gives the series a dark start.
Ambient lighting is also used to create a natural and realistic scene.
• Props- the props through this scene vary, there are abandoned cars used to
show there panic that the world was left upside down, the use of
abandoned and shredded tents show how people tried surviving, there are
also deserted children's toys representing how un innocent the world is. The
prop of the gun shows how dangerous the world is and how rick is prepared
for the new world.
5. Camera
• The scene opens with an establishing wide shot of a
long winding road with a single car driving along, this
would confuse the audience as they would question
why the car is all alone and why it is driving and these
answers will only be revealed if the audience watches
on. As the scene carries on the camera pans the car and
the shot of the car becomes clearer and the audience is
then able to identify the car as a police car.
• As the person driving the car stops and gets out there is
a long shot used, the man is on his own in a mysterious
world, the confusion is shown in the zoom in close-up
of his face as he observes the location.
6. Sound
• The Sound throughout the start of this scene is ambient as the series
is suppose to be based on a natural disaster that has happened therefore
the sound is calm symbolizing how calm the world could be when the
population has plummeted. The pleonastic sound of the fly's around the
dead body imply the body's have been dead a long time.
