The skin has three layers - the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer and contains keratinocytes that produce keratin and melanocytes that produce melanin, which determines skin color. The dermis is the thick middle layer containing blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, and glands like sebaceous glands that produce oil and sweat glands that produce sweat. The innermost hypodermis layer is made of fatty tissue that regulates body temperature and connects the skin to muscles.
