The simple pendulum consists of a small bob attached to a string or rod that swings back and forth due to gravity in a repeating pattern. For small oscillations, the period of a pendulum's swing does not depend on the amplitude of the swing and can be calculated using a small angle approximation that treats the pendulum as moving in a circular arc rather than a cycloid path.
