- 1. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo - Dominic Moore What is The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo? The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, commonwealth and international military bands. The event is held annually in August. A military tattoo is a performance of music or display of armed forces in general. The History The first Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo took place over seven decades ago, and was inspired by a simple show, called “something about a soldier” which was performed in 1949 at the Ross Bandstand which is still there to this day and those attending the Edinburgh Tattoo are encouraged to visit this historic site. The first producer of the Edinburgh Tattoo was Lieutenant Colonel George Malcolm. He aimed to bring the army’s contribution to the Edinburgh International Festival to life. In the same year of 1949. Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm also produced “The King's Men”, which took place on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade in front of a standing audience of 2,500 people. After the success of these two shows, the new Lord Provost of Edinburgh Sir Andrew Murray asked the General Officer commanding the army in Scotland to present a military show that was to be called the Edinburgh Tattoo. It was then that it was agreed that the event would take place annually during the Edinburgh International Festival.
- 2. The Modern Edinburgh Tattoo In the modern era of the Edinburgh tattoo, there have been many celebrations and also many changes that have taken place. In 2018, the Royal Air Force celebrated its 100th birthday at the Edinburgh Tattoo and they were also the lead service that year. Because of the fact that the RAF celebrated their centenary at the event, the 2018 theme for the show was “the Sky’s the Limit.” This was also to celebrate Scotland’s “Year of Young People.” Another celebration that took place at the tattoo was in 2019 which marked the 70 year anniversary of the NATO, this is The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. This is a military alliance between 30 european and North american countries. The Tattoo has also been on tour multiple times over the past decade, some of the most recent ones being quite recent. In 2016 the Tattoo ventured all the way to Melbourne in Australia and Wellington in New Zealand. The theme for this show was “Fanfare for the Future.” The Melbourne show also includes performances inside the Etihad Stadium. Another one of the most recent tours also went to Australia in 2019 where the theme that year was “At All Points Of The Compass.” Some of the most exciting developments that are taking place in the Tattoo are all of the technological changes that are happening which would never have been imagined when the Tattoo began. In 2018 laser technology was used to enhance the displays for the first time ever in the tattoo. Another first took place in 2019 where the Tattoo used floor projectors for the first time. Also in 2019, the Tattoo took on a new venture by releasing the first official whiskey with Glenkinchie. The whiskey is a limited edition single malt scotch. In 2020, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo celebrated its platinum anniversary, which is 70 years. Unfortunately, due to the global Coronavirus outbreak, UK restrictions meant that the 2020 and 2021 events had to be cancelled. Former British Army Captain Dominic Moore says “ I am very upset that the Tattoo has had to be cancelled for the second year running. I usually go every year and I am very much looking forward to returning to the 2022 Tattoo.” Roughly 220,000 people attend the festival every year with an additional 1 million people watching on TV, so a lot of people will be in the same position. The 2022 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is set to be bigger and better than ever.
