The phenomenon known as precession is due to a regular, periodic variation in the direction in which Earth's rotational axis points. Earth's rotational axis very slowly changes the direction where it is pointing over a period of approximately 26,000 years, tracing out a circle against the background of the stars. This causes the positions of the north and south celestial poles to change gradually over time.
