Non verbal communication accounts for over 50% of communication and includes body language, facial expressions, gestures, how people stand, act and use scent. It is important because it reinforces, contradicts, complements or substitutes verbal language. The types of non verbal communication are kinesics (body language), oculesics (eye contact), proxemics (use of space), haptics (touching), vocalics (paralanguage), chronomics (use of time), appearance, environment, artifacts, and olfactives (smell). Non verbal communication can vary significantly between different cultures.
