This holiday season suddenly came to a halt with the
sad news that former president Nelson Mandela passed
away on 5 December 2013. Madiba touched the hearts of
so many people around the world including world leaders,
celebrities, but mostly the man in the street.
With Mandela’s passing, people from around the world
undoubtedly would like to pay their respects to him by visit-
ing the sites where he made history. We are very fortunate
as residents of the Western Cape to be surrounded by
so many landmarks to honour Nelson Mandela. Here is a
list of landmarks in the Western Cape to visit this festive
season and pay tribute to him by leaving a message or
memento.
Robben Island - Nelson Mandela spent 18 years as a
political prisoner on Robben Island. This prison was later
converted into a museum and also is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.

For many years have I been visiting the retired elderly, yet, the most striking
truth regarding some of these retirees are their present state of loneliness,
being “Dumped and Forgotten.”
During one of my intercessions with an elder woman she consented that I may
report her heartbreaking story, and I quote as reported to me in Afrikaans:
“Ek is nou al 88 jaar oud. Soos dit ‘n goeie moeder betaam het ek my drie kinders
byeen geroep voor my intrek hier in die ouetehuis en aan elkeen hul erfporsie
gegee. Ek was onbewus van wat die toekoms vir my sou inhou.
Vandag kyk ek terug oor die jare en met ongekende hartseer moet ek sê dat nog
nie een van my kinders sedert die dag van my intrek 22 jaar gelede, hul opwagting
hier gemaak het nie. Inteendeel ek weet nie eers of hulle almal nog lewe nie, wat
nog te praat van hoe my kleinkinders vandag lyk. Ek besit net die paar kinderfotos
saam met hul ouers.
Die jare het sy tol ge-eis, my pensioen het gekwyn, en vandag is ek finansieël
verarm. My menswaardigheid is hierdeur in ‘n groot mate aangetas. Ek kan nie
eers ‘doeke’ soos die baba doeke wat moeders aankoop vir hul babas,vir myself
aankoop nie. Kan jy jouself indink hoe vernederend dit is om ‘n nommer een of ’n
nommer twee te moet inhou en dan agter te kom jou liggaam is nie meer daartoe
instaat om vinnig genoeg te kan beweeg om jou by die toilet te kry voordat dit te
laat is nie.
Nee wat, my kinders weet niks. Hulle is nie hier om my omstandighede waar te
neem nie. As moeder kan ek dit eenvoudig nie verwerk dat ek met soveel liefde
hierdie drie kinders deur die lewe gedra het, hulle op tersiêre vlak finansiele onder-
steuning gebied het, om uiteindelik myself te vind, verstote en vergete.
Soms wonder ek, indien ek hul erfporsies teruggehou het tot my dood, sou hulle
my dan gereeld kom besoek het?”
Age has the tendency of bringing out the beautiful character of the elderly, but
even more the character of a failing generation when it comes to their responsibility
toward attending to the emotional need of a father or a mother “Dumped & Forgot-
ten” in their own environment. Are you such a dumper?
Write to us, and let us know who are those “Dumped & Forgotten”. Who are those
who have not seen their children for many months or even many years. We would
gladly like to make contact with these children and remind them of their God Given
responsibility toward their loving parents.

Mediclinic Vergelegen reopens
after flood
After the flood of 15 November, Mediclinic Vergelegen, Somerset West reopened
its doors to the public on Wednesday, 27 November 2013. The majority of doctors’
consulting rooms, four theatres as well as 90 ward and 10 ICU/High Care beds
functioning as a multidisciplinary hospital.
The Emergency Centre also reopened, but trauma cases will be referred to the
nearest available facility, as radiology services are not available at this point in
time. The pathology services based at the hospital will be operational. Special-
ist doctors who practice at the hospital will consult from their rooms and admit
patients to the hospital.
The estimated date for the completion of final interim clean-up operations is 31
January, 2014.

The Vital Foundation, in association with Run/Walk for Life Western Province
Athletics Club, successfully hosted the fourth annual Vital Run in aid of the PATCH
Helderberg Centre for Abused Children on Saturday, 7 December 2013. The event,
which drew an estimated 3 800 enthusiastic finishers, once again took place at the
Lourensford Wine Estate. It was thanks to all this year’s entrants that a cheque for
R25 000 was handed over to PATCH.
It was through the relationship with PATCH, that Vital Health Foods was made
acutely aware of the horrific statistics associated with woman and child abuse. In
order to make a tangible difference, Vital Health Foods launched the R1 makes a

After a period of three generations the property of Henricus van den Oever
changed hands. Pierre and Karin Vosloo, connoisseurs in the Restaurant
Trade purchased the estate from the van den Oevers, and on 1 December
2013 they became the new owners of Henri’s Restaurant and Pub in Somerset
West.
It was an emotional and tiring time for the van den Oevers and the new owners.
The sellers were saying goodbye to a lifelong history of ownership, and Pierre and
Karin were separating paths with their lifelong partner at Hillside Tavern, Pretoria
after 24 years to become the new owners of Henri’s.
Pierre grew up in Stellenbosch and decided to return home and share his exper-
tise in the Restaurant Trade with the Helderberg community. While in Pretoria his
Restaurant won “Steak House of the Year” awards in 1992 and 1993.
The Henri’s menu offers “Something Different”, just another way of creating
variety with a different combination of dishes.
Two of the most recommended and well-presented starters are the Crispy Patago-
nian Calamari, deep-fried in a spicy paprika crust served with rocket, lemon aioli
and spicy tomato salsa, and the Beef Carpaccio, topped with a caper dressing, with
red onions, rocket and Parmesan. This does not exclude the bestselling starters,
the Asia Trio, and the Avocado Salad.
The secret of Pierre, is preparing “award winning steaks” with his well developed
in-house basting sauce. The 300 gram Fillet is a must for meat lovers and can be

The menu concludes with man’s worst enemy, but the challenge to indulge in
mouthwatering deserts cannot be overlooked. You can simply not leave Henri’s

For many years city elders of various churches within the Helderberg-basin have
met with the intention of building out the Corporate Life within this community.
Sunday, 17 November saw the last of the 2013 Helderberg-basin Corporate
Church meetings held at the NG Kerk Moeder Gemeente, Somerset West. The
main theme at the meeting was based on two important aspects of Christ’s phi-
losophy. Are you “Simon” who as an “in the box thinker” in Luke 4:5b said “Master,
we have toiled all night, and have taken nothing” or are you Simon Peter who after
Christ’s Resurrection, having become that “out of the box thinker”, as recorded in
John 21:6, followed the Divine Instruction of the Resurrected Christ and “cast the
net on the right side of the ship”.
The distinct difference revealed in these passages is based on the pre-Christ
crucifixion teachings and the Resurrected Christ teaching. It is the placing of the
philosophy of an “in the box thinker” before the Divine Philosophy provided to an
“out of the box thinker”. It is the time of being bound by the deeply structured Torah-
teachings against the liberated-teachings of the Resurrected Christ. Once stuck
inside the box you think, and act as an “in the box thinker”.
Christ revealed a great truth to these disciples of him through the use of the
phrase “right side of the ship”. The phrase “right side of the ship” reveals that those
“out of the box thinkers” in the ship are placed in the position of Divine Strength
through the presence of the Inliving Christ active from within them.
It is Christ, as recorded in John 17:21, knowing what was about to follow who on
the eve of His Crucifixion called upon His Father and requested that “they [being
the out of the box thinker] all may be One [Body]; as Thou Father, art in Me [Christ],

The centre helps children with all types of disabilities. Everything needs to be
done for severely disabled children, whereas moderately disabled children are
prepared for mainstream school. The Centre was founded because of the lack of
disability centres for children in the area, especially children from disadvantaged
communities.
Seen with all children, the earlier intervention, the greater success. Based on the
physical and mental disabilities of the children, they constantly need individualised
treatment and care. Educational plans also need to be reassessed each term.
Previously these children had no means of getting to the centre. An added advan-
tage of the centre is their beautiful new bus, called Daisy which collects the precious
children from their homes in the morning and return them safely in the afternoon.
Their own transport helped ensure good attendance and continuity care which is
part of their service.
Education outside the
classroom
EDUCATION
Every year in November Somerset
College gives the Grade 9 students
the opportunity to learn more about
life outside the classroom - away from
home. “The Trek” is a 27-day journey
of self-discovery, covering 360km on
foot, in canoes and on bicycles. It is a
remarkable journey that starts on foot
from the school in Somerset West and
ends on the beach in the De Hoop
Nature Reserve.
The school’s flagship Outdoor Educ-
tion Programme called, “The Trek” is
now celebrating its tenth year. The
Programme allows students to explore
their natural surroundings with conveni-
ent access to the nearby countryside,
mountain trails, sea and camping facili-
ties.
This is the only school adventure
programme of this magnitude in South
Africa offering outstanding educational
exercise that teaches students to learn
about life outside their comfort zone, a
deeper understanding of themselves,
how to work closely in teams, to appreci-
ate the environment and learn important
skills to cope in challenging situations.
Students are given the opportunity
to lead, make decisions affecting the
group, prepare meals, write letters to
family and friends and learn camping
skills, orienteering and general survival.
A Centre of love,
hope and laughter
During their time the students are
involved in community service in a
nearby town. This not only provides a
change in their daily routine, but a won-
derful opportunity for them to make a
difference in the lives of others.
The nature of the Trek ensures that
every student is tested physically, men-
tally and emotionally, but reaches their
destination safely, with a new strength
of spirit and memories of a life experi-
ence that will stay with them forever.

and students and a dedicated Outdoor
Education Department and a Board
committed to the values inherent in
a programme that seeks to enhance
and deepen the educational experi-
ence of students at Somerset College,”

A visit to The Bizweni Centre for Disabled Children in Somerset West
reflects the characteristics of love, laughter and hope. They focus mostly
on the early education and development (ECD) of children with physical and
mental disabilities.

from 08h30 to 10h00 at Bizweni Community Centre. Furthermore, as an extension to these weekly

Wine Maker of the Month
Hannes Nel is not just a Winemaker, but a scientific winemaker who does
not believe that wine is made in the wine cellar, but rather, that wine is made
in the vineyard. Who would have thought his philosophy could be true?
The News Paper spent time with a man of great creativity and talent and can
only report on the success recorded over an eleven year period of dedicated devo-
tion. His love for making wine in the vineyard is the secret of fulfilling the process
towards the ultimate quality of the various cultivates in the cellar to produce supe-
rior balanced and harmonious wines.
He is a qualified wine-microbiologist who got his Master’s Degree in wine making.
His philosophy in wine making is based in his approach to make wine with minimal
intervention.
Graduated at Stellenbosch he found himself in the unfortunate position of being
over qualified for the wine industry, therefore sought another form of employment
until through a third party he became aware of an employment offering at Lourens-
ford. His application was successful and in November 2002 he took office as an
Enologist at Lourensford Wine Estate and has hence been promoted to Cellarmas-
ter, overlooking the entire wine making process at the prestigious Estate.
At the time of his employment Lourensford Wine Estate had not produced any
wines, yet the first vines was still in its second year, and the first wine season was
only three months away.
Many talents of this superior winemaker have not been disclosed. In time to come
The News Paper will report on Hannes’ hidden talent in wine and the reason why he
believes in the combination of certain cultivates with others in producing the more
superior taste in wine.
Not being shaped in the traditional stables of wine making, but having been
exposed to the scientific approach to the beauty of the created fruit in the vine has
brought forth the son of wine making.
Congratulations Hannes, we believe you can reach higher goals, and bring great
pleasure to the lovers of superior wines.

Mobile diningMobile dining - restaurants on wheels or food trucks, is a trend that started in
America a few years ago and is visible in the Western Cape at specific locations,
lifestyle venues, exhibitions or private functions. The old caravan used for Decem-
ber holidays are now converted into a colourful mobile food truck with a professional
chef behind the counter, serving gourmet food to their customers.
Cape Town residents are particularly blessed as the total food trucks increased
since Luca Castiglione, chef-owner of Italian restaurant Limoncello, launched the
first food truck under the umbrella, “The Cape Town Food Trucks.” Since then a
number of food trucks have appeared on the scene, giving the customers a wide
variety of choices from gourmet burgers, Asian street food to spaghetti vera. Our

Die Wors Rol - The Gourmet Wors-Rol is specially designed by Chef, Bertus
Basson. According to him there is nothing “as lekker” as a great hotdog! He serves
the 22 centimeter sausage made with Sweetwell Farm meat, special sauces and

Lotus Food Truck - The menu is contemporary Asian street food inspired by co-
owner Kyle Miller’s trip through South East Asia. Enjoy Asian braised beef short rib,

12. WESTERN CAPE
As World Design Capital for 2014 (WDC2014), Cape Town will be the first African city to
host the event. The Mother City will be a focal point for the international design commu-
nity in 2014, with design-related projects and signature events hosted in the Western Cape
throughout the year.
World Design Capital is voted biennially by the International Council of Societies of Indus-
trial Design (ICSID) to cities that are dedicated to using design for social, cultural and
economic development. It gives Cape Town the opportunity to display its achievements and
goals in the 2014 programme of design-led events and activities.
Cape Town Word Design Capital 2014 Programme launched
The WDC 2014 Programme was launched on November 2013 by Mayor Patricia de Lille
and Cape Town Design CEO Alayne Reesberg.
It has been a 10-month long period of two calls for public submissions and difficult curating
of 1253 projects across the City, province and beyond. The WDC 2014 will provide an oppor-
tunity to showcase about 450 projects that have been officially recognized, which will form
part of the Programme next year. World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 (WDC 2014) imple-
menting company, Cape Town Design NPC, will allocate R1-million towards the projects and
initiatives that will form part of the programme. The R1-million allocation will be used to fund
successful projects and initiatives from the first and second call for public submissions.
In addition to public submission projects, the overall calendar and programme features the
remaining five WDC Signature Events, City of Cape Town Ward projects and existing events
in Cape Town that will be leveraged for WDC 2014. Projects were submitted across the four
WDC 2014 themes: African innovation, bridging the divide, today for tomorrow, beautiful
spaces and beautiful things.
“The central thesis of the City of Cape Town’s approach to the World Design Capital 2014
is to use excellence in design, to design the change we want to see in our city, using the very
building blocks of which our city is comprised. All of these projects are united by their use
of design and design-led thinking to help us drive the social and economic change we want
and need,” said De Lille.
Past cities to hold the designation include Torino (Italy) in 2008, Seoul (South Korea) in
2010 and Helsinki (Finland) in 2102. The launch of WDC 2014 takes place on 31 December
with the New Year’s Eve of Design signature event. The countdown to 2014 will announce
the biggest Year’s Eve party Cape Town has hosted.

netbal seisoen het vroeg in Maart reeds met proewe afgeskop. Na twee weke is die
19 netbal spanne aangewys.
Bennie Saayman het tydens ‘n netbalkliniek die afrigters verder tou wys gemaak
om sodoende te verseker dat die gehalte van die netbalafrigting onverbeterlik bly.
Van die afrigters het ook hul skeidsregters-gradering voltooi.
Die o.18A-span het gedurende die Maart-vakansie aan ‘n geslaagde toernooi in
die Swartland deelgeneem. Vanaf middel April tot einde Mei het verskeie spelers
aan die Boland- en WP-proewe deelgeneem.
Caleigh Stuart is in die o.13 WP-span en Savannah Käsner in die o.16 Boland
spanne onderskeidelik opgeneem. Beide bogenoemde spelers is onderskeidelik
in die o.13- en o.16 Wes-Kaap spanne opgeneem en het aan ‘n Nasionale Netbal
toernooi in Boksburg deelgeneem.
Die seisoen is op ‘n hoë noot met die jaarlikse interskole teen Hottentots-Holland,

Summer days are longer, and we spend more time outdoors. It is important that we take
the necessary steps to protect ourselves from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The sun
has two types of sun rays – those you can see, and invisible UV rays that can cause skin
cancer. Remember that UV rays can burn right through the fabric of beach umbrellas and
they can reflect off water, sand and cement.
Know all about sunscreen
Sunscreen helps block harmful UV radiation from causing damage to the skin. Sun Protec-
tion factor (SPF) measures the protection provided by a sunscreen against UVB rays. When
choosing sunscreen, select a product that provides “broad-spectrum” protection for both
UVA and UVB. Sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher are suitable for days you are outside for a
short period of time. If you are going to the beach or pool make sure the sunscreen is water-
resistant with a SPF of 30 or higher. Higher SPF numbers are better. Sunscreen should be
applied 20-30 minutes before heading outside to give it time to absorb into the skin. Re-apply
every two hours, or more often when perspiring or swimming, even when it’s overcast.
Remember, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. the UV rays are at their strongest.
Wear the right clothes - Clothes do not provide full protection from the sun’s UV rays and
can penetrate through fabric and damage covered skin. Nevertheless, clothing remains the
most effective way to minimize exposure to UV rays. A hat with a brim of at least 3 inches
all around can help shade your face, neck, ears, and scalp from direct sunlight. Wear long
sleeves and cover as much of your body as possible.
Wear a pair of sunglasses - Wear sunglasses that blocks out UV rays, not one of those
cheap ones you buy on the street.
Look for shade -Take regular breaks in the shade can help reduce exposure to sun. When
planning your outdoor activities, take an umbrella, set up your picnic under or near a tree, or
take breaks in a nearby shop or pavilion. It will allow you to get out of direct sunlight through-
out the day. Be aware that you can be exposed to UV rays even in the shade.
Important: You can be exposed to UV rays even on cloudy days.

PHILWEST CELEBRATES ITS 50TH
ANNIVERSARY
This is the true story of Andy Loughton,
the man behind a local bakery business,
Bread of Heaven. Regardless of obsta-
cles that may come his way, the bakery
bakes bread and buns daily and deliv-
ers its with Tuc-tuc to the homes of the
needy.
It all started 15 years ago when Andy
developed a fascination for bread. To
him it was nothing more than curiosity.
As a husband, and father, totally self-
sufficient, he found himself totally lost.
He was not a Christian even though
his wife attended church. Sundays he
would sleep late and perhaps attend a
baptism or wedding.
The Loughton family moved to Som-
erset West 13 years ago to start a new
business in the building industry.
One day during 2003 while in traffic
in Victoria Street a voice said to him:
“You are going to own that business one
day”. He looked across the street and
there was an old bakery, the Le Crois-
sant. He thought to himself: “What on
earth would I want to own that bakery.”
Nothing came to light for the next
couple of years. He sold the business
in Somerset West. He was wonder-
ing around, totally lost, searching and
crying out for meaning and purpose in
his life as he was already in his forties.
In his searching he read books that
took him step by step through the
process of enlightenment and a fine line
of truth was being revealed to him.
During this time Christ found him, and
he found Christ.
During 2007 a business broker phoned
him and asked, “You just bought a res-
taurant, would you like to buy a bakery
as well?”
Without any knowledge of a Bakery,
having business experience only in

sanitary ware, plumbing and building
materials, he told the business broker
that he would like to see the bakery.
When he arrived at the bakery he
recalled that it was the same bakery that
he visited a few years ago.
From a financial point of view he real-
ized that there was no asset value in
the business he was about to buy. After
negotiations with the seller, they agreed
on the sale and Andy would pay off the
debt of the business.
Where did the name Bread of
Heaven come from?
During the first six months from taking
over the business the hymn, “Bide me
over Redeemer” repeated itself in his
mind three days, and every time the
chorus came to “Bread of Heaven”
the hymn started all over again. One
morning during devotion he realized
that the new business should be called
“Bread of Heaven”.
The moment he acknowledged the
name ‘Bread of Heaven’ peace came
over him and the continuous sounding
of the hymn stopped, and the next part
of the company slogan was revealed,
“Serving Daily”.
Even though the seller was in finan-
cial difficulty, the sale to Andy did not
go through as a loss to the seller, but
rather, Andy paid him more than antici-
pated, leaving the seller leaping with joy.
The story does not end here. Join us

Douvoordag Slagtery started way back in 1995 as a small business operating
from a two roomed butchery with a cooler room and four employees. It was the
need of “Koup Lamb” in Cape Town and surrounding areas which became the back
bone of the Douvoordag Slagtery. No better “lamb” can be produced as the “Koup
Lamb” and this vision, the owner Joubert Esterhuizen grabbed with open hands.
It was friends and colleagues of friend’s that made the butchery grow unto having
two outlets in Cape Town. The first was successfully secured in the Northern
Suburbs Willowbridge Slow Food Market in Durbanville. The second was estab-
lished in June 2013 at the Habitat Centre Somerset Mall, Somerset West.
Since the early days Douvoordag Slagtery developed into a well established
business with an abattoir in Merweville and a staff of no less than 20 workers, all
actively involved in packaging the best quality lamb.
The Business is run at the Merweville abattoir by Marian, Joubert’s wife ensur-
ing that the orders be executed in the manner as requested. The meat is neatly
portioned as instructed and sleeved in plastic bags. All orders are marked and
neatly packaged in cardboard containers and transported in Cooler Trucks for early
morning collection at the Douvoordag Slagtery at either Somerset Mall or Willow-
bridge Slow Food Market in Durbanville. What an excellent manner of having the
best in lamb provided at your doorstep at affordable prices.
Adri Esterhuyse, the Butcher-manager runs the Douvoordag Slagtery/Deli, Som-
erset West and is always available and able to meet your needs. Your next “Koup
Lamb” delivery is just a call away. Visit the butchery and indulge in the various
delicatessens prepared by suppliers in the Karoo.

15. Arriving early for a meeting at a coffee shop a while back, I seated myself in the corner of the
shop and had the opportunity to people-watch those around me for a little while. I stared around
the room and watched as people interacted to and fro between those they arrived with, and those
on the other side of their cellphones. Drawn by the “Free Wi-Fi” sign posted on the door,
people continued to stream in.
The truth is that this scene is hardly limited to coffee shops. Whether it’s dodging a person who
is walking and texting in the mall, or driving behind someone who you suspect has answered a
phone call as they suddenly slow down to a snail’s pace, we are becoming ever more aware of our
desire to be connected at any point during the day.
Daily strides are being taken to make it easier for you to connect to your favorite social network-
ing platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. While simultaneously making it appear as
more of a necessity, these forms of “human connection” are, in fact, diminishing existing connec-
tions.At some point we need to stop and recalibrate as we move rapidly into a sphere in which no
clearly defined social protocol has been established. Conversations over WhatsApp or BBM is fast
replacing real human interactions where we get to share our dreams, fears, joys and pains. Added
to this, we are losing basic social etiquette – checking your cellphone regularly and replying to text
messages while in company is becoming part of the norm. Without ever stopping to calculate what
this is going to cost, we abandon our values at the mercy of technology’s fierce progress.

ability to actively seek out those whom we may not see on a day to day basis? Has the art of human connection become
a scarcity in our modern society?
I was in another meeting recently where someone suggested stacking all the cellphones in the middle of the table – this
was done in an effort to avoid any cellphone distractions.The first person to pick up and view their phone would be penal-
ized by having to settle the bill at the end of the meeting. Needless to say, despite the vibrations emanating from the centre
of the table, no cell phone was touched.
However, more is required of us. We need to safeguard against losing our ability to be intentional with our relationships,
never substituting the ‘Like’ button for genuine interest and care. I am infinitely aware, now more than ever, that in a world
filled with status updates and 140 character designated comments, of the need for authentic relationships.
As part of the celebrations around
the launch of the ‘new’, bigger Wool-
worths Waterstone Village, Somerset
West Store Manager Trevone Maarman
handed a cheque for R10 000 to Mr.
Cenga, Principal of ACJ Phakade
School in Nomzano Township, Strand.
The funds were donated by the Wool-
worths Educational Programme.
Half the funds will be used for teacher/
staff development and the other half for
learner development. Mr. Cenga had
this to say, “Our school is one of those
that are underperforming, especially in
Numeracy and Literacy. We are plan-
ning to run reading, spelling, counting
and mental competitions during which
we will be issuing certificates and tro-
phies for the best learners.”
Woolworths donates R10 000
to local school
Mr Maarman also said that the store will be helping out
at ACJ Phakade with surplus food when the need arises.

16. Lambert and Uys team up for Terra Firma Challenge

Two of South Africa’s top sports
men, trail runner Eddie Lambert and
mountain biker Jurgens Uys, will
join forces in January to take on the
much anticipated Totalsports Terra
Firma Challenge from Gordon’s Bay
to Kleinmond.
According to Lambert, he has com-
peted at the event five times already.
His strength at the Totalsports Terra
Firma Challenge would be the road run
and the beach run. Lambert says, “With
this being the first time that Jurgens and
I will compete together, it is difficult to
predict what our team strength will be.”
“Both Eddie and I are specialists
in what we do,” says Jurgens. “My
strength is technical riding and long
drag climbs, while Eddie is super-fast
and focused. My event highlight will
definitely be the mountain bike course
and to win the race. I believe people
should enter the Totalsports Challenge
and/or Totalsports Terra Firma Chal-
lenge as it is a good indication of where
your fitness level is so early in the year.
It’s also a fun day out”.

7-disclipline Totalsports Challenge and
the 4-discipline Totalsports Terra Firma
Challenge. If taking on more than one
discipline seems too daunting at this
stage, there is an option to enter a team
instead.
The Totalsports Terra Firma Challenge
features four disciplines, a 50km road
bike (from Gordon’s Bay to Kleinmond),
13km road run, 25km mountain bike and
9km beach run. Participants can enter
individually or in two or four member
teams.
Totalsports Challenge features seven
disciplines, 12km surfski, 1.5km swim,
50km road bike (from Gordon’s Bay to
Kleinmond), 13km road run, 13km K1
canoe, 25km mountain bike and finally
a 9km beach run.
Both the Totalsports Challenge and
Totalsports Terra Firma Challenge
combine individual sporting disciplines,
merging athletes together as a team.
This builds camaraderie and new friend-
ships.
