The New York Knickerbockers played the first NBA game in 1946, with Leo Gottlieb leading the team with 14 points. The team made history by signing Sweetwater Clifton, one of the first African Americans in the NBA. In the 1970s, Willis Reed and Walt Frazier led the Knicks to two NBA championships, with Reed being named Finals MVP both times. After struggling following Reed's retirement in the late 1970s, Bernard King emerged as the team's leader in the 1980s. Patrick Ewing then became the franchise's all-time leading scorer in the 1990s and 2000s before Carmelo Anthony joined the team.
