The Impact of Intellectual Property (IP) on 
2012 Canadian Foreign Trade 
• The charges for the use of IP accounted for 
only 0.68% of Canadian export, but caused 
$7.1 billions of foreign trade deficit, about 
19.6% of the total foreign trade deficit ($36 
billions); 
• Knowledge-based is not good enough; 
• IP is the key factor to the added value in 
global value chains; 
• Patent CI can help to improve the added 
value of export.

Canada in Royalties and License Fees 
• Canada is the third largest US Royalties and License 
Fees export country (Ireland, Japan, Canada, UK 
Switzerland) ; 
• But Canada is not among the top five largest US 
Royalties and License Fees import countries (Japan, 
Switzerland, UK, Germany, France); 
• The US has US$84.3 billions surplus in foreign trade 
cash flow from Royalties & License fees; 
• This is about 2.6 times of the total Canadian foreign 
trade deficit (CAD$36 billions).
