James Fenimore Cooper was a major American novelist known for his tales of frontier adventures. Over his 30 year literary career from 1789 to 1851, he published 32 novels, 12 works of nonfiction, a play, and numerous other writings. His most famous work was the Leatherstocking Tales series, which featured Natty Bumppo and stories set in the early frontier period of American history. The Last of the Mohicans, set in 1757 during the French and Indian War, tells the story of Hawkeye, Chingachgook, Uncas, and a group of English civilians who are betrayed by their Indian guide.
