Chapter 9: The Peasantry

2. Araceli Nugen had taken up Tai Chi in her rather limited free
time. The life of a farmer’s daughter meant a lot of her time was
spent in the fields, doing chores around the house, or trying to
learn skills she would need in her life as a wife and mother.

3. Her older brother Gilbert,had made their father angry when
he’d neglected the fields for two days straight and nearly
killed all their tomato plants so as punishment he’d been
made to look after baby Alexandria.

4. Marcus still stopped by to visit his brother and his parents
from time to time. They were still trying to get him to settle
down with someone. Of course he couldn’t see much use in
that.

5. He did feel a little sad once his mother Kimmie had
passed. In a way, he sort of missed her nagging. At
least she didn’t know about his little affair with Agnes.

6. Agnes and Marcus’ son James were doing
alright though. She’d managed to get a
small plot of land from Lord Chen.

7. He stopped by at least once a week and checked in on
them. She sold the fish she caught to Master Gordon to sell
in his shop and used the funds to pay her taxes to Lord
Chen.

8. Marcus loved what good fun Agnes was.
She was always open for a good time.

9. Agnes Glenham decided she couldn’t complain too much
about her lot in life. She had resigned herself to the fact
that there was no way Marcus was going to do the
honorable thing by her and James and get married.

10. James was a strapping young lad, and she did hope life
for him in the kingdom wouldn’t be too harsh. She had
thought about approaching Marcus’ father, but Agnes
knew they would likely never acknowledge there was
any truth in what she claimed.

11. No, they would just have to carry on by themselves. Back
at the Nugen house, the current head of household Keith
and his family continued the rest of the season on as
normal.

12. The family had just completed work on the third floor of their
tower. It was now the gathering room. It had music, the
bookshelf, and an easel for the family to enjoy. Everyone,
had enjoyed a nice family “ball” to celebrate it’s opening.

13. Keith wished his mother had lived long enough to see the
newest floor of their home finished. But she’d died suddenly
at the age of 72. She was now buried in the Old Graveyard
.

14. Gilbert kept checking the papers brought by the herald
looking for job openings in law. What was his son thinking?
It was the middle of the planting season. Even if the job
was open, he would not be taking it.

15. Milicent couldn’t help in the fields now, since Kimmie
was gone. She now had to take over full responsibility
of the flower shop until Araceli could join her.

16. And Alexandria, was not nearly old enough to go out and
help. And his grandfather was too old to work the fields now
too, which meant all that work had to be done by Keith and
Gilbert. No, his son’s dreams would just not be happening.

17. Gilbert begrudgingly was out in the fields the following
morning laying down the fertilizer for the eggplant crop. He
supposed he was glad there were no law openings in the
kingdom right now. If he saw one in the notices, he’d just
be that much more disappointed.

18. Gilbert and Ruby Gordon were now formally engaged
which was wonderful, well wonderful in that he did actually
like Ruby unlike the other girl the matchmaker paired him
with. Gilbert didn’t much care for her brother though.

19. Archie,was oblivious to how annoyed Gilbert seemed to
find him to be. His entire focus was on working hard to
improve the family business to an acceptable standard.

20. He could not expect to marry Anne Sims a
merchant’s daughter and have her live in
such a tiny home.

21. During the weekend, Archie made time to invite the sims
over to their home so he could start building a relationship
with Peter and Catherine. He wanted to make sure he did
this properly, and didn’t miss out on marrying Anne.

22. Archie certainly felt the pressure when Catherine stopped
by the shop during the market day. The shop was still quite
small, hopefully Lady Shahan had at least seen he was
good with customers and a hard worker.

23. He supposed he did fine after all as
Catherine and Peter gave him their
blessing to formally ask Anne to marry him.

24. With that out of the way, he and his mother Regina had
enjoyed their trip to the Field to see the season’s
tournament. It had been quite the display to see Lord
Hashmi’s son compete and once again take the sword event.

25. Ruby decided now that she was betrothed to a farmer it would
be best if she started to become more handy. She loved
Gilbert dearly, she just hoped the adjustment from living in a
flat above a grocer to living on a farm wouldn’t be too much of
an adjustment.

26. Now that everyone was old enough to help with stocking
the fish for their father’s shop, they did so. Plus, winter
would be around the corner before they knew it, best to
stock the ice chest now while they could.

27. Archie couldn’t believe he’d forgotten the fish in the
oven! Luckily, the Sims hadn’t seen their daughter’s
future home nearly be burned down due to negligence.

28. Mary Noble smiled down at her eldest grand-
daughter as she played with the local Glenham
boy. She loved that Brida was so charitable.

29. Things for the Noble family had been going well. Her
son Ragnar and his wife Andrea were expecting
again even if Andrea had failed to show just yet.

30. The youngest of her granddaughters
Gytha had just learned to talk. She loved
her curly hair.

31. Ragnar was in the process of adding an
additional story to the family house. They
certainly did need the extra space.

32. The elder girls Brida and Mildrith had spent their
childhood playing together not at all bothered by
the open air seeping in due to the construction.

33. All too quickly the girls started to shoot up. Gytha was now
a child, playing with the family’s new kitten Cymmi. The
little fellow had filled the place left when Moody had
passed.

34. Brida was now a teenager who was in fact quite interested
in studying law. Her father was The Law and she hoped
Ragnar would consent to letting her study under him.

35. There was yet another grand-daughter in
the house for her to spoil. This time her
son had chosen the name Sigrid.

36. Sigrid had sprouted overnight and had quickly befriended
her Aunt Lucy. Lucy and Uthred had been able to take a
trip from the Moon Islands to visit for the first time in ages
which had made Mary delightfully happy.

37. Mildrith though had not been able to socialize with her
cousin Aelswith, and Aunt and Uncle having been tucked
away from view. Illness had taken her and the family did
not want it spreading.

38. Long after her family left and Mildrith had celebrated
another birthday, and her weakness lingered. She was still
quite a sickly young woman, and had been for years. Mary
for one was quite concerned for the poor girl.

39. The family had once again taken on help
to assist in caring for Sigrid and with
looking after Mildrith.

40. With Andrea expecting yet again, a sickly
daughter, and Mary getting older by the day
the family needed all the help it could get.

41. Brida did her best to help out too. She really missed
being able to spend time with Mildrith. They’d had so
much fun together when they were children.

42. It had taken quite a lot of time, but at last the Noble
house was allowed to start inviting outsiders into it’s
walls again. Ruby and Brida soon became fast friends.

43. Brida had tried to use the matchmaker to find a partner, but
that Juan boy she’d been paired with had not been well
suited for her at all. Why did this old lady think he would
make a good match for anyone?

44. At the end of the season, Andrea
gave birth to her 5th daughter Thyra.

45. Not to worry though, Andrea would be
having another child soon. She was
certainly fertile and took pregnancy well.

46. Gytha Noble and her cousin Aelswith had become fast
friends during her Aunt and Uncle’s visit to the mainland.
The Moon Islands sounded most interesting. She hoped
that when she got older she might be allowed to visit.

47. Aelswith had enjoyed visiting her cousins and Aunt and
Uncle, but it had been so nice to get back to the quiet of
the Moon Islands. Celestia’s capital was much too busy.

48. Her father’s tavern The Three Lanterns was doing
very well. It was the place to stop in for a drink
and a rest when traveling to the Moon Islands.

49. Aelswith loved her father Uthred especially
all the attention she could get from him
since their family was nice and small.

50. She only had to share her parents with her
little brother Beocca, but that was alright.

51. One sibling was alright as it wouldn’t mean
giving up her bedroom overlooking the
ocean at all.

52. Beocca was getting big enough to play with
now after all, and Gytha had shown her
playing with a little sibling could be fun to do.

53. Uthred for his part felt his little tavern was doing well,
though he’d yet to receive a visit from The Dutchess. But
then she did live here so he supposed she didn’t really
need to stop by.

54. The Hashmis were frequent visitors to the tavern as Heidi loved
to travel with her husband. They had happily shared news with
Uthred about his youngest brother Odda and his family. There
just had not been the time to stop in with them during his own
visit to the capital.

55. Odda and his wife Carmen were doing
well. They were still in service to Lord
Sage and his wife Zoe.

56. Lord Sage’s sister Journey still lived with her brother and
his wife and child. How exactly Lord Sage felt these days
given the fact that the lands his brother had given him had
turned into a bust was anyone’s guess.

57. His niece Isuelt rounded out the many
Noble women of this generation. She was
about Aelswith and Gytha’s age.

58. Her younger brother Erik was
also doing well by all accounts.

59. Isuelt spent her days in waiting to Lady
Cadence Lampright, Sage and Zoe’s only
child.

60. Compared to some of the other Lampright ladies,
Cadence was quite lovely or at least he heard she
seemed to be growing into her looks a bit.

61. At least his brother’s family appeared to be
happy even if they were living out of tents
and on an open field at the moment.

62. And thus wraps our journey through the peasant class for
this rotation. I’ve got quite a few peasant households now. Of
course a lot of them are Nobles…I just keep letting them all
have kids. LOL Next stop my Middle Class families.
