- Welcome to WIAD! this year’s theme “Information Everywhere, Architects everywhere” I think was meant to stimulate some conversations about IA as more than just an circle in UX, or discipline that can help you make good products, or services… But the ways we do IA things in areas of our life unrelated to IT work Talk to you about the IA of I am by which I mean the ways in we create or communicate a ‘self’ align with what we what we do when we are formally practicing IA. This is something I’ve been sort of obsessed with since way before I had the phrase “Information Architecture”
- It’s common in talks like this for the speaker to open by saying a little about them self, and it seems like it’d be particularly apt in a talk with this title, buuuut, That’s not how it’s gonna go because I don’t have a good anwer. If I had a good answer, I wouldn’t have to be so obsessed with this problem The problem of what a ‘self’ is, how I know I have one, How I know you have one (do you!?) What the difference is beween aperson and their self, and their meaning, and their identity, and their story… How do the choices I make shape these things, or how do these thing shape the choices I make. The “self” what it is, if it is, what it means Most of my personal research revolves around this central problem of who am I, and why do I *mean* what is the nature of my existence
- So I want to turn the question back on you, and ask you who you are. Think about: How do you know who you are? Are you facts about where and what your physical body has done? Are you feelings? Are you stories that assume a future? Who do you think other people think you are… ? How did they get ideas about who you are? How do you answer the question “who are you?” How does it change depending on who is asking, and when, and where? Elevator pitch of your “self” for job recruiters, or first dates, or distant relatives you meet at big weddings… (my pitches?) If these versions of your answer are different, are you being inauthentic? Or dishonest? Are you manipulating people? Let’s give ourselves a break, and think about someone not in this room for a moment.

A good way to start thinking about what’s at stake because the issues are a (extreme, blown up, easier to see) in celebrities, we can all be on the same page maybe, and because none of us have to get too vunerable and think about our own contradictions too much before 10 am on a sat.

- She played a version of her self, Her public persona was crafted, she architected And it’s my contention that she misunderstood how the public “read” We all do this, but for Paris (and famous people generally), the stakes are bigger, because there are more people… and because their public meaning, is more likely to get out of hand.
- Since we (I assume) haven’t even met her, this Tool quote stands for her too right, all we know about here is what we’ve been sold.
- People are people, But they are also representations of people…. They are symbols, with meaning to us not as complex people

- But it also means I am a symbol of myself.
- By talking about What Information Architecture is Lot’s of diagrams to situate it as a professional field, but I said I didn’t want to talk about it that way.
